Michael Sam and recruiting

[I'll put this up front. This post has nothing to do with his sexuality. If you need to comment about that, you can go to any other post on the board from yesterday.]
This guy shows how useless the recruiting services can be. He was a 2-star recruit coming out of high school and ended up being the best defensive player in the SEC. He put up 10 1/2 sacks and 18 tackles for loss this season. Those are almost Beasley numbers!

Not saying he didn't deserve more stars but stars are more often an indication of ability to make immediate impact at the collegiate level.

Agreed. I think the recruiting services are okay at identifying 5 and 4-star players, but bad at identifying everyone else's potential.

He needs to sign with a west coast team where there is a fan base that will support him. He's poison just about anywhere else. I hope he gets a fair chance.

are. I think it shows that recruiting services miss on a lot of guys.
If recruiting services were intended to replace thorough scouting and talent evaluation by coaches, then yes, they would be useless. However, the recruiting services exist for the consumer who wants to know more about the players their favorite school is recruiting, and give some kind of indication as to who the best players are. Generally, I think they do a good job of that, even if they do miss on a lot of them. They are the only source of info we have in that regard, and I'm glad we have them.

There was a good article today in the AJC about GT's Paul Johnson and star rating. I think he hit the nail on the head when he said after the obvious 5 stars everything's a crapshoot.
