Megaphones

Oct 16, 2013, 12:15 AM

I've heard several unconfirmed rumors that there will be megaphones handed out at the game. This would be a great idea for pushing up the noise when we are on defense. Does anyone know what group is responsible for organizing these things? Central Spirit?

Hadn't heard that...better take your own with you***

NCAA doesn't allow this...

Artificial noisemakers are banned in college athletics.

Mississippi State has special permission for their cowbells, and they are only to be used when the ball is not in play (although this rule is hardly ever followed). They can also only use cowbells in their own stadium (not road games nor bowl games).

I doubt we will see an AD-organized distribution of megaphones. We don't need it anyway - Clemson fans can break the record without them.

For what it's worth, I don't like the distribution of shakers. They take away from crowd noise IMO. You can't make a legitimate clap with a Pom-Pom in your hand. But I would like to see the orange towels that were handed out at FSU two years ago if they hand out anything! Say what you will about copying SCar and how they wave their white flags in defeat before a game even kicks off, but the TIGER RAGS just make sense for us!

Not giving us megaphones

passing out "commemorative traffic cones" instead. Not their fault if the fans choose to yell through them.

They aren't artificial noise makers like bells and whistles.

Oct 16, 2013, 12:38 AM

They direct the sound waves so none escape outward. They don't amplify the sound at all. They just concentrate it in a certain direction, making it seem louder. Perfectly legal.

Oops, I may be misinformed...

Only the SEC bans these as a part of their policy on artificial noisemakers (which has been in place since the '70s).

Regardless (or irregardless for everyone else on here), I know we can break the world record without megaphones. We have a special stadium with special fans and this is a special game. I've come to find out that cupping my hands in front of my mouth while yelling is pretty effective!

It was confirmed by the CU Athletics twitter.....and mini megaphones aren't artificial noisemakers (they don't make the noise themselves), so they are allowable.

Oh, and they also confirmed it will be whole stadium, not just the student section. ;)

Cupped hands make excellent mini-megaphones. 80,000

Oct 16, 2013, 9:42 AM

of them aimed at Famous' earhole would bring an unholy cacophony of sound his way. No plastic required.

I'll be doing this

Oct 16, 2013, 9:51 AM

my mouth is too big for a mini-megaphone, so I can be louder using my hands.

This will probably sound kind of dorky, but I was wondering whether many other people use the technique I use for making noise while the team is on defense. While the opponent's team is in their huddle, I start blasting out a single, continuous, monotone shout with my hands cupped to focus the sound toward the field - I call it "the human airhorn". Not yelling phrases like "Go D" or "Come on Tigers", just the single continuous blast. You'd be amazed at how loud you can get, how little effort it takes, and how long you can keep it going before having to take another breath. I've done it at home just to see if it is really all that loud, and it really is - the pets scattered when I started. I've noticed others in our seating area starting to do it too, and was wondering if anyone else thinks it might be an effective way to get the decibel level up into the stratosphere.

Re: That's what most people do around me***

I started trying this last year, and when I did, people in the rows in front of me would turn around and look to see where the sound was coming from, with this kind of "WTH?" look on their faces. Eventually the more uninhibited of them started doing it too, so now there are several around that use that technique. Seems like a lot of people are too self-conscious to do it though.
