Alternative history: Let's say Ford remains Clemson coach

Jul 8, 2014, 12:53 PM

in 1990. Now project what happens to Clemson in the 90's and 00's based on your knowledge of surrounding teams, recruiting, resources, and momentum or setbacks.

You will need to consider Clemson's make up (including recruiting, scheduling, and the fan base split by Ford decision also admin and sports split--all had seemed to be on the same path before them)

In addition you need to think about other Factors/teams surrounding the Tigers in projecting Clemson's path:

FSU and their rivals Miami and UF (all on the rise or at their height--all shooting for and either playing for or winning national titles; recruiting in Florida HUGE )

UGA and GT (UGA in a decline for a while until 1999, GT going up for a while-wins 1/2 NC in 1990)

USuC on a slight rise, huge drop 0-21, and then rise again in late 00's

NCST slipping and UNC taking top spot in NC because of Mack Brown

Virginia on a slight rise--beats Clemson for first time in 1990

Tennessee on a rise--recruiting in SC big, battles UF and wins NC later on

Other national teams (ND under Holtz, Ok, Neb, etc.)

Anybody up to the challenge of charting a path for a Ford coached team in 1990 and beyond?

clemson faces death penalty from over zealous boosters...

crazy times if ford wins the battle over the football dorm, which was "outlawed" by the nc2a a year or so later.

That is one future to consider.***

was struck for Ford to be "removed" and avoid further sanctions. Probably unrelated, but possible. Would have hated to have wins vacated, etc.

time. I think we helped the Vols to stay at the top during our Dark Ages.

Also wonder about the new O's and if Ford would have adapted or not based on teams like UF.

FSU benefitted big time with Peter and Michael Boulware.***

I also don't believe GT would have captured their 90 NC

Jul 8, 2014, 1:04 PM

because Ford would have beat them in Atlanta.

Danny continues to field an ultra-conservative offense.

Jul 8, 2014, 1:09 PM

3 yards and a cloud of dust becomes too easy to stop. Defenses remain very good. Tigers win 7 or 8 games per year and an occasional mid-tier bowl game (a la Tommy Bowden). Danny finally "retires" under pressure in 1998. Clemson hires Tommy West and history picks up from there.

I don't know. I took a stab at it. Lol.

Jul 8, 2014, 1:10 PM

ouch anything involving TW as HC at CU has bad hire written all over it. ;)

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-74tiger.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No - west came in '93 or '94 right?

Jul 8, 2014, 1:11 PM [ in reply to Danny continues to field an ultra-conservative offense. ]

So I change the above. Danny is allowed to stay until '98 and Clemson hires Bowden.

Maybe same now, but 90s and early 00s would have been better***

I blame Hatfield for the fact we arent. Worst CU coach I've ever seen. Took a gem of a program and ran it in the ground

No joke. Can you imagine what Danny could have done

with DeChane Cameron and Ronald Williams??

National title in either 90 or 91. That 90 team was absolutely loaded. The team had just come off the huge win vs. Major Harris and had tons of momentum heading into the offseason.

If memory serves some national publications had picked us to win it in 90...then all hell broke lose in the offseason.

Recruiting would have stayed high. We would kept all of NC's recruits and UT would have never gotten into SC. The question is how would Danny have evolved his offense? The last good option team to win a title was the Cornhuskers in 94? After that we saw the offenses start to change due to Spurrier at Florida.

I don't recall any fan base split when Ford "resigned".

the majic going for a while longer.

Keeping Danny or the staff might not have been enough to overcome the obstacles our BOT was putting up. Its taken 25 years to take off some of the self imposed shackles.

Army all the way to Washington and taken the city after 1st Bull Run, we'd be standing at attention to "Dixie" before each and every ball game.

Its fun to speculate like this. Given free range to imagine all things can conjure up lots of possibilities.

But reality was a cold slap in the face and the penalty for our fierce passion for all things Clemson and for our naivete--and possibly an inability to see coming changes in college football-- was wandering in the wilderness for 25 years.

Still, though the labors have been many and disappointments all too frequent, I am very proud of my alma mater and the way she has responded to all the adversity----exiting the down years stronger academically and with great, great athletic promise (ok, ok, baseball remains in flux).

To quote the many: "There really is something in those hills."

First Battle of Manassas

is the correct term. Stonewall wanted to. Davis said no.

And yes, Clemson would have won the NC in 1990 and probably 1991.
