It's an ethical way to use NIL

I thought coach was not supposed to be involved in any way with NIL. If Dabo is distributing NIL, what makes him any different than Jimbo?

That's what some are saying as to why Dabo isn't playing the portal game hard. Using the big NIL money to retain guys already on the roster. Makes sense to me but it also says the pockets aren't super deep like other teams. Day said this earlier last year that he needed a few mil in order to preserve his roster.

If I recall right he told boosters > 10 million. He wasn’t screwing around with a few mil. Eight figures just to keep players from bolting at OhioSt. It’s crazy to think what that translates to for other programs.

Yeah I think we would love to get some of these portal guys but we just can't afford them. Heck it sounds like we have to find money in the couch cushions just to keep our own guys, if this Mafah thing is true. Of course, Dabo isn't going to come right out and say we are getting outbid, he's going to try to act like he didn't really want anyone to start with. Can't blame him if thats what's really going on.

I remember at one point Dabo said he would like to see NIL $ held in an account until graduation as an incentive to finish your degree. I would maybe allow someone to draw against the account if they had a financial hardship but the overall idea would seem to have merit. It also might help some of these guys from making poor financial decisions and frittering the money away and also keep bad elements away from it like family and friends.

The coach is paid by the university (with other contractual commitments like TV appearances). The university cannot pay the players (openly).

For perspective, Texas and Texas A&M combined are supposed to have $50 Million NIL cash according to their fans. They each have an Athletic budget exceeding $150 Million. Clemson has about half their budgets and nowhere near the NIL money ?
TAMU has 508,000 living Alumni, Texas has 570,000, and Ohio State has over 600,000. USC about 300,000 and UGA 350,000. Clemson has about 155,000 living alumni.
Dabo knows, he has to recruit based on the unique Clemson family, academics and quality people. We can’t compete based on funding and NIL.

but not basketball.
When I've posted about our huge money disadvantage in basketball in terms of what we spend on the program, I have been repeatedly told that money isn't important and that having the right coach matters.
So now money does matter?

It’s relative. We spend more on football now in relation to the total amount of money that we had than we did before we started winning. Basketball and football are not an apples to apples comparison. If Brownell actually had did more with less, then the university would invest more into the program. Dabo was the brains behind our Social Media team, football specific nutrition staff, etc.
What brainchild has Brownell come up with other than complaining?

Brad helped shepherd the $65 Million renovation of Littlejohn which according to Judge and others was a total waste and meant nothing. So yeah, is Brad really someone worthy of additional investment or is it better to find a leader there with some vision and chops that can properly leverage the assets we do have?
As far as football expenditures go, we're 20th in the country in terms of budget today and Dabo has yet to fall under that number for an end of year ranking since 2010. Until the last two seasons, he was blowing that ROI through the roof. Over this two-year sag, he's still overachieving relative to budget.
The sad troll that is JK lives and breathes to antagonize football fans, who she despises and needles incessantly because too many simply don't care about basketball. Anything she can stir up to dig away - she will be front and center. It's pretty sad to see play out on here like it does.
Go Tigers.

Just stop it.
The NIL issue has a larger proportional impact on a (relatively speaking) small money program that has been competing at the very highest level for 6 consecutive years, and has been competing in the top 15 or higher level for 12 consecutive years.
On the other hand, the NIL matter does not have the same proportional impact on a small money program that has been in a middle of the pack level for decades (since Rick Barnes left).
Clemson is a middle of the pack money program; our basketball program has been performing at ~ the same level as our money.
Football had greatly outperformed our financial resources because of cultural superiority and competitive non-cash benefits for the players.
Now that open payments are on the table, our cultural advantages are harder to quantify vis a vis cash payments. This allows the big money programs to optimize their primary advantage (e.g., more money than the not-big-programs) to shift the balance of power in their favor.
Basketball gets money according in proportion to its on the court performance and gets money out of proportion to what it contributes financially.
Football gets money that is below what it achieves on the field and far below the revenues that it generates for Clemson.
Sorry that this reality is troubling to you.

A Miami basketball player, who was already making about $400,000, tried that last year. John Ruiz, who had signed the player to the NIL deal, told him "No, you signed the contract". The player stayed.

That's exactly how it should work. The negotiations will be in the length of these deals and the ramifications if they are broken.
1-year deals are to the player's benefit, they can portal out after a year.
Clauses requiring re-payment, return of goods, or deferred payments if contract terms are violated will benefit the "company".
Multi-year deals have risk and reward on each side, just like any NFL contract.

Mafah had the highest PFF rating from among our entire offense unit for 2022.
Keep that fact in mind when looking at what Mafah may contribute in 2023.
