Louisville stats in away games since 2014.

Sep 28, 2016, 12:15 AM

I looked up this info and would like to share just in case anyone might finds it interesting. Since 2014, it's when Pretino came back and also when Louisville joined the ACC. The record is 9-4, which is not bad. I include Lamar Jackson's stats as well.

The games were mostly close. Not a lot of experiences in hostile environments. They did go to South Bend and beat Notre Dame in 2014, I give them that. But that year ND was like meh.

Lamar Jackson is definitely much less accurate in away games. It's 70% at home vs 53% in away games this year and 59% vs 51% last year. (Watson is 57% at home vs 62% in away game this year and 65% vs 74% last year. Somehow, Watson is more accurate in away games.) If you compare this to most QBs, you won't see this much difference.

Takeaway: This kinda gives me some sort of confirmation that Louisville and Lamar Jackson don't play well under pressure. This is probably what you guys already knew it, but this should confirm it in a way.

2014
L @Virginia 21-23

W @Wake Forest 20-19 (19-26 73.1%, 207 yds passing 2 TDs, 2 yds rushing 0TD)
L @Pittsburgh 34-45 (9-17 52.9%, 141 yds passing 1TD, 19 yds rushing 1TD)

Great info. wow, they've never seen an environment like death valley .... Think they'll either have the stuttering first half and a solid second half (due to over excitement or pressure). Or will be hot out the gates with adrenaline, but will get worn down because they were overly excited.

Still think the tigers prevail in a close one which will be decided on the last drive of the game....

Marshall and Cuse putting 28 on them says a lot!!

Did Syracuse putting 27 on us last year say much?

Sep 28, 2016, 11:39 AM

Actually, Marshall and Syracuse are two pretty good offenses. In Marshall's case, most of those points were scored after UofL was way ahead. Louisville also got ahead 28-7 before Syracuse scored some points in the 2nd quarter, but the game wasn't really close in the 2nd half. I'd say most of those points are garbage points.

Marshall was also playing without their starting QB, who was out with a concussion.

Wow, WF held him to 2 yards rushing

and Pitt held him to 19. Must have been a number of sacks.

None of that has to do with this year w/ Lamar Jackson

Sep 28, 2016, 11:37 AM

It's a very different offense.

You really cannot compare our first two years in the ACC with this year. Night and day. Our last two years we have been in search of a quarterback and an offensive line. Last year we started three freshmen on the offensive line, so we obviously struggled in that department. Throw in the fact that they were blocking for what seemed like a different quarterback each week, and it was not pretty. Fast forward to this year and the line has done a great job, including playing against an athletic FSU defensive line. We controlled the line that entire game.

And now to the obvious position, quarterback. In 2014, due to injuries and inconsistent play, we started three different QB's during the season. The same happened in 2015. Lamar was a true freshman that didn't know the playbook, and that makes it too difficult to play quarterback in a Petrino offense. Our second option was an athlete trying to play quarterback name Reggie Bonnafon. He's a great kid, but not a quarterback. This year he is playing WR for us. The other option, and this year's backup, is Kyle Bolin. He is a coach's son and very smart, but he also was inconsistent last year. He struggled last year against CU, with our porous offensive line giving up five sacks and Bolin throwing two INT's against no TD's.

As the season was coming to end the writing was on the wall that Lamar was going to be the guy, and with him having a month to prepare for our bowl game against Texas A&M, he finally had his breakout game. He both passed and ran for over 200 yards each, only the third player to do that in college bowl history.

Fast forward to this year, after an off-season of learning the playbook and learning to be a pocket-passer, we are seeing the fruits of all of that hard work. No, you cannot look at our history for the last two years and extrapolate that to this year. Petrino finally has his quarterback and his offensive line, and the numbers speak for themselves.

Throw in the fact that four defenders chose to forego this past year's NFL draft, and we returned a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball as well, and honestly they have been the unsung hero. Against an explosive FSU offense, the starters basically held them to 10 points before the backups gave up some cheap points.

With all of that said, it will take just as good a game to win Saturday night, and this team knows that. Fortunately, many played here two years ago, so they know what to expect. It should be a great game, but I do not expect a shootout. Both teams have great defenses, so unlike these so-called great $EC defenses that give up 40 and 50 points, this will be a lower scoring affair than many expect. Should be a great show for the ACC and the national audience. Good luck to you guys after Saturday.
