looking for advice

Jul 25, 2012, 8:12 PM

My son is a 6'5'' rising junior. He has played all 3 major sports his entire life, been a quarterback since he was 7. The school he attends here in Spartanburg has decided to go to an option based attack much like that of a Georgia tech or a wofford. He has decided to quit the football program because of this and concentrate on the other 2 sports. The question I'm asking is does anyone know of any other opportunities for a player to showcase his skills other than on the high school field, whether it be some sort of travel team or camps. I hate to see him being forced out of something that he loves and is good at, but the reality is there's not much room for a 6'5 drop back qb in an option offense. He went to talk to the coach and was basically told they may throw the ball 3 or 4 times a game, which made his decision to leave fairly easy. He has considered changing schools, but decided not to leave because of the baseball program. Any suggestions.

I like that idea, but unfortunately, nobody's gonna beat out Bentley Jr. Better or not.

Not sure about the county you live in. We live in Lexington county and as long as you provide the ride. Your child can attend which school they please. Just as a previous poster said about some B-L players

You may want to look at intramural flag football. Believe it or not, some coaches or people on the athletic staff attend some games just to see if there is some talent. Current players play some too. If your kid makes enough noise, he may be encouraged to walk-on and earn a scholly. I'm not really sure how all of this works though so someone more knowledge my have some insight.

Irmo would be a place for a qb and they run the pistol now instead of I Formation so i would contact coach hanna and see if there are any other spots open

Is football his best sport? Is he going to take this to the college level and beyond? Is he better at the others? If he wants to play football, and cannot be QB, go to a different position. If he has to be QB, and it won't be there then go to hargrave in south va. They take boys of high school age + one prep year. great football program. They have all sports. It is a military prep boarding school.

I would advise him to look around and find another school if he wants to play at a d1 school

If he has played enough in the area that other coaches know him/his abilities, i would suggest talking to area HS Coaches for his options. Also, there are plenty of HS Recruiting Services; get their input. Sometimes there are "trainers" who have great insight and contacts.

He could also look at this year as an opportunity to work on his footwork, defensive fronts/blitzes, etc - use this year to work on the game of football.

Don't walk away too quickly from his own HS team but search out local knowledge from an experienced coach; doesn't have to be a HC, just a thoughtful one.

Better football and baseball programs, IMO. Better academics too!
