Hard to understand..... Kid kicks a 51 yard FG in the spring game and we let him go to the tar holes.

"Let him go"
Were we supposed to tie him to the goalpost?

He lost the competition. You want to make him the starter based on 1 kick you saw? You realize there were weeks of practices, right?
Play devil's advocate...let's say we made him the starter. Gunn transfers (btw, Gunn is a top-3 nationally ranked K recruit on scholarship). Then Boyd struggles, and we don't have Gunn.
Would y'all be saying the same thing now...should have made Gunn the starter?
This is just a completely stupid comment.

There are polite ways of saying things but this was not it.

We didn't let him go, pretty sure his transfer surprised Dabo.

He would have been a walk-on at Clemson this year even if he won the starting job, unless someone else chose to leave.

Surely they didn't offer him a scholarship BEFORE he entered the portal though, right? Right? I mean that would be tampering and the NCAA would bring the hammer down on UNC just like they have before.

I don't think the rules are the same for walk-ons.

Hasn't it been said throughout civilized civilization that hindsight is 50-50, well, Dabo was 50% wrong with his choice for a kicker!!!

If only B.T. Potter hadn’t left early after 6 years and put Dabo in this situation

I don't know a whole lot about kicking and kickers. What I do know from reading up on them this afternoon is that kicking is the most volatile and under-appreciated position in football. One year the pros almost went through more place kickers than they had teams. The kicker is the most prolific scoring tool most programs have and yet the vast majority of kickers in college football don't even get scholarships. Most are given the status of "preferred walk-on" which means that all you have to do is hit more field goals than the other 4-5 kids brought in to compete against you and you are on the team no questions asked. These kids operate in probably the highest-stress hero or zero positions there can be in the game. Who else gets trotted out to perform a 50+ yard kick with 2 seconds on the clock to try to win the game after the defense and offense have screwed up all game long and if you miss the entire loss is your fault?
So whoever it is cut them a bit of a break if they take time to settle or even if they suck. Its an unenviable place to be.
