Just curious about new coot AD

What exactly makes Tanner a qualified candidate to run an athletic department? I don't really know much about the guy but being a head coach is nothing like running an athletic department. I'm sure he must have some sort of significant experience in something other than baseball right? Otherwise this seems like a pretty big risk.

Surely he can hire good coaches too.

He was Assistant AD at NCSU, I think what's going to be the real challenge is being OBS boss

He's the only head coach to win a NC

Twice. And yes, I'm discounting water polo or whatever other meaningless NC they won. He's not eligible for the HOF yet so let's give him the AD job.

Dabo would make a great AD at some point.

Tanner seems like a pretty sharp guy with natural people and organizational skills. He may be perfect for the job. His lack of AD experience shouldn't disqualify him.
Some people have what it takes to be good at just about whatever they choose to do. Tanner may be one of those people.

Several things
Jul 12, 2012, 6:49 PM
|
|
1) He's long expressed an interest in finishing his working career athletic administration.
2) He would have preferred to continue coaching a few more years, but the timing is the timing.
3) He's been a special assistant to the President of the University for a few years now. (Not sure what that means- but I gather he's been privy to a lot of the ongoing discussions and issues throughout the athletic department and university)
4) He was an assistant AD at NC State.
5) Tanner-for years- has been one of the most popular people in the athletic department with fellow coaches- and regular line employees (support people, secretaries, admin assistants, etc)
- and he wanted the job - and with his success- that more than qualifies him according to his boss.

SCU AD, he has been the only coach there to field a consistently good team over the past 20 years in any sport. Tymick1, how did you ever figure out that he is so well liked in the SCU AD? You must have some inside sources.

Tanner's taken a sincere interest in athletic department employees- and has ever since he first arrived.
That matters to some people.

So all I gather from your list is that he wants the job REAL

BAD and he's popular. Thats not exactly qualifications. The only thing listed there that gives him any cred is that he was the assistant AD at puppy U. They aren't exactly a model athletic department.
Hey, who knows maybe it will work out. Still seems a little risky to me.

Qualifications is a relative term

the "qualifications" are whatever the person doing the hiring considers are qualifications.
Some people hire people that only have advanced degrees. Other people want someone that has "real world" experience - while others may want to reach out to a person that is working in an almost entirely different profession.
For example - Dabo Swinney was a position coach at Clemson. He had never been a coordinator in his life. But the AD at Clemson had some specific qualifications that he felt were more important and Dabo fit those.
Dabo's resume wouldn't have landed him a major college football head coach job anywhere in the country. But Clemson's AD thought different becuase his Dabo's qualifications- whatever they were- fit what he wanted.

My thoughts:
-He seems to be generally well liked amongst the different coaches. I know he has great relationships with Spurrier and Pastides (president) as well. -He will be a great ambassador/fundraiser for the university. -He has at least some experience in administration (associate AD at NC State, has a master in Public Administration).
Not sure how he will be with the financial aspect of the job, but he will retain a lot of associate ADs and other members of the current administration. He is also bringing in Brad Edwards (current AD at Newberry), which should help.
Overall I think he will do a solid job. My biggest concern is how it will affect the baseball team. Holbrook is supposed to be great, but those are awfully big shoes to fill. Time will tell

This rash decision, will lead the coots right back down….

the toilet. Sorry but you just don't see coaches going from being a head coach to AD anymore. Modern College Athletics are far different from the old days. This will come back to haunt Tanner and the cooties.

It could be like going from wide receiver coach to head coach.

that he eventually became the head of. A college baseball team is not the same thing as an athletic department.

It's actually very similiar to Dabo

Dabo was a position coach- he wasn't even a coordinator.
But Dabo was well liked- and knew the team. He wouldn't have been a candidated for a head job at any other major program in the country- but Clemson hired him.
Tanner has experience as an assistant AD. He's been at South Carolina for a long time and knows the athletic department well. He's well liked.
Tanner wouldn't be a candidate at any other major school in the country. But South Carolina hired him.
