I understand you are talking about the Orange Bowl "Champion" but when there are only 2 teams and 1 is the ultimate "champion" it is better than losing but not really a true championship when you have 40 other "champions" from all of the other bowl games. It isn't like his decision leaves us in a position that cost us real value. I think we would have been just fine either way.
If it was a playoff or even the ACC Championship, now we have something real to chew on but with the OB, not so much.

Dude, stop. What would I be right about? I never said anything one way or another about this. It was cool last year when no one opted out. I get questioned about my loyalty all the time when I make a statement that doesn't line up with the sunshine pumpers on here. God forbid if I make a tongue-in-check comment when things happen that goes against the party line.

I do recall reading some fans in the past making fun of other teams for having players opt out of bowl games and pointing out how that didn't happen at Clemson. Of course this was during the time when Clemson had made the CFP 6 years in a row. I always pointed out to people then that we wouldn't be above this happening either and had only not happened to us due to players being less likely to opt out of CFP games.
This is simply how things are going to keep going in college football. I don't like it, but it's also easy for us fans to sit here and say that we'd be projected as a top 10 draft pick and would be willing to go out and play an extra game without a championship on the line and risk getting a major injury in the game that could potentially cost us millions. You could tear your ACL in the bowl game or something and that would cost you draft position. Sure, you'd probably still get drafted, but a team is probably not going to draft you in the top 10 if you're likely to miss your entire rookie season.
Based on next years projected draft salary, just the different in being the #10 overall pick and being taken with the last pick in the 1st round was a difference of $9.8 million in total value including over $7 million in signing bonus money. Yeah, they often have insurance but those policies don't come close to making up for that big of a difference in money.
I think the Jaylon Smith injury in his bowl game several years ago scared a lot of players. He was projected as a top 5 pick and ended up falling all the way to the 2nd round of the draft at #34 overall. It's estimated that the injury cost him between $12 million and $18 million in total depending on where in the top 10 he would've gone and just the guaranteed money from being a top 10 draft pick would've been $5 more than his entire contract value based on where he was actually drafted at. His injury insurance policy only paid him $700k which yes, is a lot of money, but it hardly puts a dent into his overall loss.

You hit on exactly why I made the post (contrary to what others think the purpose was). Some fans think we're exempt from "perceived ills" of college football and some have been pretty vocal about it.
Murphy is making a business decision - no one should fault him for that. And it shouldn't have any impact on the perception of Dabo or the program.

sports program we have - men's soccer excluded - in order to . . . ? ? ? ? . . . . cause further division and / or make fun of our own fan base - due to . . . . who knows what.
It DOES suck he is opting out - it IS amazing it hasn't happened before now to us - it IS a testimony to the character of the guys we have on the team & their commitment to each other - it IS a hit to our culture, in my opinion, in a small way in that we have lost the selling point that Clemson guys honor their commitment to their teammates - until the very end.
And it is an ever-increasing indication that college football is pretty unhealthy right now.

I see your point but he gave us everything he had for 3 years. Now he is a projected Top 10 draft pick with millions at stake. I think he has earned the right to consider his future and not risk a serious injury in a bowl game that is mainly for personal pride and bragging rights.
I watched Kyler Murray go down last night with an ACL injury, completely untouched. I really can't blame Miles for not wanting to take that chance with so much on the line for him and I personally don't think he deserves any grief over it.

I don't see how a bowl game opt-out affects culture. Men do it all the time in other college football programs. Don't see how it would be any different when it happens at Clemson.

it does show that Dabo's thought process about bringing in portal kids needs to (and already has) changed. A few years ago, you wanted to send a signal to your kids that you believed in them and didn't want to risk bringing new kids in that may taint your culture. However, many of the SAME kids you were trying to protect, kids who were fighting for playing time behind the starters, are now bailing on you in droves. Got to fill in those gaps now. It can be argued playing less talented kids (compared to what you've had in the past or what the program should have) b/c they are your HS signees can actually erode a culture in several ways. IMO, we lost several opportunities to fill in keys gaps over the past several years that left our depth too low/or not talented enough in certain position groups. The effect on those position groups, and others, hasn't been good.
As I've always said, Dabo is 1000% correct about HS kids being the main core of your team...it will ALWAYS be that way. Just subtle changes need to be made where a sprinkling of transfers can fill in those gaps which are now all but certain. BAMA does it perfectly IMO. I alluded to this several times on here....but Dabo has been making subtle changes behind the scenes to adopt. You will see more of it very soon. A bit late... but better late than never.

opting out, just like I don't like the new portal rules nor the NIL.
However, there are a lot of things I don't like and a lot that I do. My grounding is the realization that no one in particular really gives a hoot in he1l about my opinions. I realize in today's society, most want to play by new rules, particularly those that benefit them...and to he1l with everyone else.
We recruited them to play football. When they're done, for whatever reasons, we just fill their spot and keep marching to the same beat. And whatever culture we may have marches down the same path.
