Interesting comment about parking garages at Clemson

Aug 13, 2013, 2:30 PM

I wes having lunch earlier today with a couple of people employed by Clemson University and the subject of parking garages was discussed. Although I am personally not big a fan of parking garages, according to my two lunch companions, the two biggest reasons Clemson has not added parking garages is; 1) President Barker is adamantly opposed to them becasue they detract from Clemson's natural rural setting, and (2) the addition of parking garages would significantly reduce the large amount of revenue the University generates as the result of parking fines. Parking fine revenue ?!?!?! Are you kidding me ?!?!?!

There is enough parking on campus now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LOL...there was a serious parking problem....

Aug 13, 2013, 2:43 PM

back in the early and mid 80's when I was a student. They haven't added any additional parking since then but the student enrollment has increased from around 12,500 in the mid 80's to neatly 17,000 now. Yeah...that doesn't sound like much of a problem to me.

You are wrong, there is sufficient parking just not

Exactly where each student has to only walk a short distance.
Go talk with university logistics people.

There is plenty of parking...

it just isn't right at the door of every academic building. With the presence of Tiger Transit and the CATBus system, parking really isn't an issue.

Maybe I'm not aware of all these phantom lots but

Aug 13, 2013, 9:56 PM

when I went there 2005-2009, there was a lot of construction that eliminated a lot of student parking including all of the upper level Lee parking lot. Parking was a nightmare. I don't consider parking a half mile away 'enough parking spaces either.' Where do you draw the line? How far is too far? Half mile? One mile? Charleston? It's a pain in the royal $%@ when you have to hike with a project in your hands from one end of creation to the other.

One of my buddies couldnt find a spot one day

so he parked in Barker's driveway and left a note on his car explaining why.

Surprisingly, his car was still there when he came back several hours later.

it's income. does anyone know how much? do you think

Aug 13, 2013, 2:36 PM

clemson is alone in this? not excusing them biggie, i just don't get the rub.

as a state university, what can they incumber or tie to non-payment? i'm sure what ever it is, it's pretty persuasive in many cases.

or graduate if you are going to finish school. Note - these two apply only to current students whom they are likely getting most of that parking fine $$$ from.

kewl, i had a overdue book fee which help my transcript

Aug 13, 2013, 2:47 PM

at washington and lee. i paid it without question. it was my bad.

state, local agencies are beginning to suspend licenses based on unpaid fines including parking violations. in out of state cases, these individuals are assigned dl#s based on license plate/registration. because the federal government, ndr, provided a national data base, these suspensions are honored in all fiddy states.

wondering if state universities have gone this route.

One of my lunch companions said it was more like a revenue river during a flash flood.

every space is marked and the rules are easy to find. If you choose to ignore the rules, then that's no one's fault but yours.

you would have to search long and hard to find a university that does not have parking woes. When I was a student in the 60's there was a problem with parking. We all survived.
