I honestly think he may not get drafted. If so, it will be late rounds 6-7. I think someone has given him bad advice. He should collect and bank another year of NIL which I think is probably $100-250k. I he banked it, with a good post NFL career, 20-25yrs of working, he would have a good retirement fund.

Scouts are goung to see a 4.65sec+ speed which is not great for his size and would be ok for Mafah size. In Ship's tape, they will see a guy that always falls with arm and shoestring tackles. And a guy that runs off-balance too often. Ship is nowhere near the runner that McCaffrey is and could use a great year to under a new OL coach to showcase his versatility.

While I wish him well, he will not luke his 2024 draft status unfortunately.

Because Shipley comes to Tigernet to seek approval.... A sports forum is for people to discuss their opinions whatever they may be.

So please explain and stop blitching. Tell me where I am wrong or said anything that he cant improve on. Some posters just say moron with no context, give it to me. I love Ship, but I dont see a top 20 D1 RB going into draft and RBs values are in the toilet compared to 10yrs ago when Ingram, Richardson, Chubb, etc., were still highly drafted.

Shipley is not Kamara or McCaffrey, please tell me where I am wrong!

Sometimes there are more important things than being right. Our esteem for rhetoric is misplaced.

Even if you wanted to answer the question honestly and said late rounds or undrafted you could’ve done so with grace and appreciation instead of trying to crap all over every perceived weakness you see in his skill set. I don’t think anyone that watches football would say your estimation is unrealistic, but it was strangely cruel and pedantic. At least that’s my critique of why that post sucked.

Shipley made the correct decision: FB or no FB

You stated the perfect case and also sound advice as how to every Tiger supporter should endeavor to express themselves with respect to the decisions of young people’s next steps in life.

Shipley, with superb support from his family, may have viewed him as having topped out as far as where college football would take him.

As for his overall Clemson experience, it is my understanding that he has already earned his degree. Furthermore, his business degree positions him to achieve financial security after he learns the nuances of his non-football career AFTER his football career has concluded.

As for Shipley’s immediate term NIL money decision (let’s assume ~ $250K had he stayed for another year in college) vs the worst case scenarios with respect to the NFL (he gets injured while training for the combine / on campus Pro Day and ends up on a NFL practice squad as his final stop in competitive football), the $250K is mere peanuts. For most of us (I’ll refer to myself here), $250K is a game changer as far as starting out in life. Shipley’s already banked NIL money is at least that much. The additional $250 from an additional year of CFB is no where nearly as meaningful to someone who already has $250K+ than it did for me when I had about $250 (two hundred & fifty dollars).

Shipley’s NFL experience, even if his entire time is on a practice squad (but I strongly believe that he will see game time in NFL games) will be far more valuable than another year of college FB. Simply broadening his résumé’s experience, with the inclusion of being a true professional athlete in America’s favorite sport, will,be valuable for starting his business career. Again, given the high likelihood that he’ll be on a non-practice squad NFL roster will also let him bank some more money while boosting his recognizability. Pretty good way to give him a big leg up on his first few business world jobs.

Being bright, well educated in a valuable field, hard working (undeniable attribute), competitive (another undeniable attribute), and (with the exception of outward displays of excitability during a game that requires high levels of emotion) commitment to whatever he undertakes (a tremendously valuable attribute), Shipley’s after football career success is nearly assured.

Who knows? Maybe Shipley will be a NFL star. Then his decision to go pro will be obvious to all.

Either way, as much as he will be missed on Clemson’s FB team, his decision to give the NFL a try is the correct decision.

I think it is cool when people make character judgements from a distance based on "body language".

My take: He could have easily sat out the bowl game instead of playing and risking injury. He is a team guy who wants to win.

Good luck, Ship!

You will get brutalized for this post, but I could not agree with you more. He is not going to make an NFL roster. He was a mediocre back at Clemson at best as you said he was slow. He doesn’t have very good vision. He is a horrendous pass blocker, he’s not a great teammate. He’s really not even a good receiver out of the backfield, so what team is he going to when given a whole 5 feet wide he could run through it holes in the NFL are open for far less time than they are in college football, and with his lack of burst and explosiveness, he’s got no chance .

When Ship was in the game I knew that effort, class, and character still mattered.

If we had 85 Shipleys on scholarship, we’d never lose a game. So much like Boulware.

So appreciate his passion and effort.

Ship epitomized “All In”. From what my eyes saw - he WAS “All In”!

Much success Ship! Never forget all you’ve done for the Paw!

I figured the comment section would read this way and I pray nothing but the best for this young man. Now, for some of our fan base. We have watched you all for season upon season rip these young African American players apart for leaving early even when they've graduated. Ya'll said T. Higgins wasn't ready and he's completely balling out in the NFL. Now maybe "you" didn't say it but I swear I read it a million times on this very blog in the comment section. Will, in terms of the year he had might be a 4th/5th round pick. I'm just a rural middle school football coach in South Carolina so I don't know everything so I stand to be corrected but I however wish and pray that he goes to the NFL and balls out and lives out his dream to the fullest, immeasurably more than he could ask or imagine for because thats what we should always wish for these young men with they've sacrificed their bodies to entertain us with the risk of leg injuries, CTE, etc. Can we make a commitment this year to being a little more positive towards our players. All of our players.

To quote Dabo “that’s bullcrap.” I and I think most have always been super supportive of guys going to the league if they’ve graduated. May not have always believed that was their best decision, but always been supportive. Sometimes they proved me right, sometimes they proved me wrong. It always seemed to me that Shipley was the heart of the team. Always was counted on for a spark when they needed it and every time he touched the ball he ran like there was no tomorrow. Like every play was his last. He and Blake Corum are cut from the same cloth. NO ONE gave more and he was a leader on the field and off. In an age of very few role models in selflessness and team before everything else, Shipley is a guiding light and will be an asset no matter what he chooses to do in life.

All the best Mr. Shipley! You will be missed in Clemson.

I wonder if he consulted with NFL folks and received a grade? Ship is a dependable back if he does not fumble, and is a good receiver but does not have great speed. Good luck Ship.

I think he is one of the fastest guys on the team.
Just guessing, but it may be that his speed bursts drop off after 40 yards???

I’m a big Shipley fan and selfishly wish he came back next year. I wish him a long, healthy, successful career.

My guess is Ship knows we will struggle on the O-Line again next year and another year will not increase his draft stock but increase his chance of injury.

Best of luck Ship.

He ran hard, he played hurt and he obviously loves Clemson so I've got no complaints if he wants to give the NFL a try.

I wonder if the leg injury in the GB played into his decision. Maybe he realized that any kind of Freak play could end his NFL dreams.

Good Luck Mr Ship and remember SHIP HAPPENS, especially at the Combine or Pro day!!!! We love you being a Tiger and are sure you will be a sucess

Smart speculation as to a factor that might have (probably?) influenced his NFL decision.

We all remember Shipley’s concerns and reflection about the potentially serious whacks to his head and neck during GA tech and NC State games. For a smart guy who also has excellent non-FB career prospects, he is reasonable to be thinking, after the GB, that he may well be limiting his life experiences by staying in CFB.

I think he made the correct decision.

I heard during the season that he would likely be leaving.

Honestly, it’s good that this decision is public. It’s felt like a lot of drama lately with all of this.

This man had already submitted paperwork pre Gator Bowl, and knew it was a lower than desired rating. So, hoping the bowl game would boost stock, he could EASILY vault to the next level with a great performance under his belt one final time. I think he accomplished 65% of his goal, modestly assuming.

So, coaches are known for advising talent ig they may want to seek elsewhere, and they'll help as much as possible, etc.... I think Shipley has manned up, knows his NFL fate will linger on pro practices or combines. I think he is betting on himself to show up there simply because his choice was that, or leave Clemson. This dude is so Clemson at heart, he's being logical to move forward, but not detach from Clemson also. I think he loves Clemson that much

I applaud this man. Wish him the very best, and hope he visits the sidelines when he can to pump some people up with all that energy!

Thank you Will for all that you did for us at Tiger Nation!! Follow your dreams and if you don’t make a team in the NFL come back and play a Hunter type roll for us next year…. Mafah needs to be our starting RB either way next year and we have some new RB’s that need to be getting reps too. I think at RB Shipley had seen his final days, he was typically a 2yrd carrier that seemed fairly lite in weight when someone got an arm tackle on him. I DO appreciate he didn’t portal out though…. So tired of kids making that move GO TIGERS next man up

Best wishes to Ship, as he sails off to another chapter. He accomplished more at Clemson that I ever dreamed. The second half of his freshman seasons was incredible as was his entire sophomore campaign. He is one competitive, fiery dude and set some ACC records during his career. I'll never forget the kick return in his final play, which set up the winning drive.

From a career perspective, Running Back is a tricky position to manage though, so I get wanting to get in the NFL as soon as possible. I'm sure he'll get an opportunity at some point, and hopefully he both makes the most of it and gets a sizable second contract.

Shipley had a great career here at Clemson, but I honestly worry he doesn't have the true breakaway speed to make him an elite RB in the NFL. His longest run this year was 33 yards, and the longest in his career was just 53 yards. He also only had one reception in his career go over 30 yards. We saw what true breakaway speed looked like in the Gator Bowl in Barion Brown. Shipley's speed is nowhere near that level.

Here at Clemson, I think we'll end up being fine next year as Shipley and Mafah ended up being very similar players. Both are pretty much power backs with good hands, but Mafah is simply a bit bigger and stronger. Shipley runs the better routes, but I actually think we'd do better pairing Mafah with someone more explosive for a true change of pace.

Thanks, Ship, for the memories. True heart of a Tiger! Best of luck!***

But I can't help but love the kids heart and desire to win. That can't be taught, that is a born with trait some competitors just lack. He will do just fine if some team gives him a chance. He will win over the locker room and will be a force with some good coaching. Go get'em, 1

I;m a little higher on Shipley i think than most of the board, yes he had some fumble problems seemed like alot of times he was close to breaking one put got tripped up by a hand or his own feet.

But putting that aside he is still very young, 33 td's in 3 years is alot and he missed prob 8 games in those 3 years so it' not even a full 3, i would say looking at the positives he has a nose for the endzone, you never know he could be better than we think in the NFL.

Best Thing to Happen For Clemson Offense

Jan 5, 2024, 2:16 AM

I wish the kid luck in his future career but his NFL dream will be dead by Labor Day 2024. The hype around this kid has fascinated. More hype than any player we’ve had on offense outside a QB since CJ Spiller. So much hype that even the kid is believing it. He’s a slow RB, with zero explosiveness, zero quickness, so sudden movements, who frequently goes down with arm tackles or because he runs so off balance the turf monster. He has zero vision, seriously how many times have you watched Shipley run directly in to the back of his own lineman? Against stronger opponents he was less than a three yard per carry guy and the bulk of his numbers came from beating on cupcakes or when games were decided? He had a couple good games but he’s a paper tiger. Beating up on a weak FSU or Furman doesn’t make you a future NFL star. He is a below average receiver, he puts the ball on the turf far to often, he has zero vision, unless there was a hole he was an at best 1-2 yard per carry guy. He was NEVER, and if you disagree you need to stop drinking the kool aid, a threat to take one to the house. Even if we were at the opponents 20?? He wasn’t a game breaker he was a serviceable running back who saw plenty of touches because our qb plays has been atrocious. Even in year three he was the worst pass blocker I’ve seen at RB here at Clemson in a long time. Yet he was given more leeway than any back I’ve ever seen under swinney. Ettiene was the greatest back in our history. Would have been even better if swinney didn’t remove him or limit him his freshman year because of his pass blocking? Shipley wasn’t the consummate tiger he was selfish. He had no problem calling out teammates but he didn’t hold himself to those same standards. The Shipley era at Clemson will be known as one of the worst offensive eras here at Clemson in over two decades. He played a huge role in that. Missed opportunities, missed blocks. Dropped game changing TDs or back breaking turnovers, he was symbolic of all of them. What I always found remarkable though was his lack of interest in the success of anyone on offense other than himself. Christian Wilkins would run down the sidelines and hug everyone to celebrate. Ettiene and Wayne Galman, just to mention a couple recent backs would stand on the sidelines encouraging teammates in the game to score and celebrate with them. Not Ship. Him leaving will open up the backfield and I guarantee open up our offense. I wish him the best of luck, this isn’t a day to be sad it’s a day to celebrate because the Ship we had to endure won’t be happening here anymore.
