I'm just glad that Wes is DC

Sep 25, 2022, 9:41 PM

As much as we love BV,we should, best DC in school history,we all know had he been DC at WF, it would have been next game when he corrected the problem of the coverage.Wes actually did it in game.

Before you Knuckledragging whiners hit post message, that's a fact we saw play out time and time again during his tenure, IE Pitt Shovel Pass,J Winston FSU,LSU Title Game and the last OSU game. Many more those of us that actually love what the man did can point out .

That's kind of like giving credit to the Captain of the Titanic for course correcting AFTER he hit the iceberg...

The OSU game was Dabo’s fault

Sep 25, 2022, 9:53 PM

he pissed them off by ranking them outside the top ten while it was obvious they were a top 5 team. Just stupid. They came out with their hair on fire. But you have a point regarding the others. Especially the Pitt game.

Yeah, I'm sure Ohio State wouldn't have been motivated to win a game that would get them into the NC game otherwise.

Wes just doesn’t have the experience

Sep 25, 2022, 9:57 PM

to be the DC at a top 20 program. He could be great but at what cost to the program?

Weren't we saying the same thing about our QB just a couple of weeks ago? Chad Morris certainly didn't come with anything but High School cred. People develop at different rates. I'm not especially thrilled with the DC at this point but I also know you don't make these kinds of assessments after 4 games.

I think we find out this Saturday what kinds of adjustments he will make and how they pan out. Not saying it is the determining factor regarding his future but it will be a good insight as to how he responds to adversity.

So best is the standard except for coaches that aren’t ready but we need to develop? I want Wes to be great but it is going to take time and mistakes. We are wasting one of the most talented Clemson D’s in history.

BV was great, but let's not act like he would've had some magical solution to help make our secondary better against Wake while missing 3 starters back there. We gave up over 300 yards passing to Wake last year at home without missing 3 starters in the secondary.

So far that cost does not include a loss. Your post might make more sense if we had multiple losses. Last time at this year we were 2-2…..

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The same can be said for a number of Clemson's assistants...

Many of them are inexperienced (e.g., Spiller, Grisham, and Wes).

I like Wes and think he will be good long term. However, I think he is definitely learning on the job. With the talent we have, the defense is underwhelming at best. The front 4 rotation is probably the best in the country from a talent and experience standpoint but they have not played well in my opinion. They didn’t help the corners yesterday because they couldn’t get pressure on Hartman. Our linebackers have been the brightest spot on our D so far. I hope they all continue to improve, including Wes.

Interestingly enough, he is the linebackers coach.

True. He’s also the coach of the entire defense.

In fairness to Wes the QB/WR group for wake could be the best we see. The scheme wake has is a good one, Hartman navigated the rush in the pocket brilliantly virtually all game.

I’m troubled with how our defense doesn’t create pre snap confusion, or really move much at all pre snap compared to last year… and with our young corners in the game we can’t really upset timing with bump and run coverage.

All these things combined factored in, including all the PI’s that extended drives.

If our offense can catch fire we can make it through and when we get our DB’s back and Wes keeps learning we could be in line for another playoff run.

It's either sink or swim against NC St. We will find out IF the D can improve enough to keep us in the game. Anything similar to Wake will be a but kicking by the Wolfpack. They play a lot better D than Wake and probably as good on offense.

What amazes me is that some of you guys are putting the blame on WES and not the DBs lol. If any one getting blame it should be DBs and DB coaches.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He should’ve gone 2 high safties

Sep 26, 2022, 7:56 AM

much sooner in the game. It was obvious we could not get to Hartmann or guard their wide receivers one on one. At least he finally did make the change, but the game would not have been so close if he had made the change sooner.

Like I stated in another post, not thrilled and was perhaps one of the worst performances by our secondary I have ever seen. Hartman is a good QB and I said I was worried before the game that he might torch us. All that being said, Wes did adjust to compensate for our weakness and WF was able to then run the ball on us and open up offense. However, give him time. He did adjust to the things that were exploiting us against GT and Furman. Those two powerhouses really showed our weakness and we took down their might offenses.

We "corrected" the problem when, exactly?

Sep 26, 2022, 8:20 AM

On Wake's final regulation drive with 3 minutes left in the game? Or was it on their final possession in OT?

Wake's 2nd half drive chart looked like this:

4 plays 68 yards TOUCHDOWN
7 plays 70 yards TOUCHDOWN
8 plays 75 yards TOUCHDOWN
7 plays 64 yards FIELD GOAL
8 plays 27 yards PUNT
5 plays 25 yards TOUCHDOWN
4 plays 4 yards DOWNS
