Idiots at the car wash on Saturday.....

Full disclaimer, I won't say "where" and "which" car wash this was, let's just say it was in the Charleston area.

So, RB pulls up to the machine, selects his wash, swipes his card, and moves forward and takes his place in line. I noticed, in the other entrance to the right of me, another vehicle that was stopped at the other machine, with a woman repeatedly swiping a card over and over, with no results. Other drivers behind this woman were visibly becoming impatient, and started hoking their horns. Then, I noticed this woman walk away from the terminal and continue onto the sidewalk...appparently abandoning the vehicle. At this point, people were trying to get into the other lane and multiple vehicles were backing up, honking, drivers were getting upset, etc. In other words, pure chaos. I thought to myself, good thing you didn't get behind that idiot RB. Little did I know.....

Shortly thereafter, with all of this going on behind me, I notice that I haven't advanced one inch in over 15 minutes. Nada. We are just sitting there. Then, I notice that the two guys working there are running back and forth from one end of the car wash, to the other waving their arms and shouting unintelligible things to each other. One of them proceeds to throw his hat on the ground, and walks off the premises.

At this point, I'm thinking what in the sam hayll is going on here...is RB going to be stuck here all day? I turn my vehicle off, exit the vehicle, and approach the remaining worker, who looks visibly flustered. I ask him: What in the hayll is going on here? He says to me: "Well, a woman turned her steering wheel, went off the tracks and now her car is pinned in one of the washers. We can't get her out of there and the machine won't shut off." Immediately, I'm thinking, I need to get the hayll out of here. Like now. Just then, I notice the other car wash guy has reappeared, and has blocked the entrance to the car wash with cones, and is motioning for everyone to back up and leave.

At this point, it's pure chaos. Cars are turned sideways, cars are attempting to reverse, cars are backing up into bollards (and getting damaged)......and everyone who has paid wants a refund. Including RB.

With all of this going on, I notice that the woman who left her car parked at one of the card machines, has returned. She resumes attempting to swipe her card, with no result, apparently oblivious to the chaos around here. One of the attendants walks up to her, looks at her card, and tries to explain to her that "You can't pay with an EBT card"....she has an incredulous look at her face and says "Well, I ain't never been here before so how do you expect me know that!?!" OK, I thought to myself....this explains a few things here today.

At this point, I am growing a little concerned that someone is going to back into my vehicle and damage it. So after surveying the situation, I realized there was only one way out---through the landscaped buffer, across the sidewalk, and out onto the road. It was either that, or wait for a bunch of women in yoga pants sipping Starbucks, driving large SUV's or expensive German cars, back into each other, into bollards, into trees, or into my vehicle. I decided it was time for bold action and chose to exit via the landscaped buffer. Yee haw! One of the rare moments I actually got to use my 4WD these days.

In hindsight, I should have never gone to that car wash on a weekend. Live and learn.

I've only heard bollard used in boating, for moorings. I never knew it was also used for barriers for car traffic. Thanks.

Did you get your money back?

I dunno, but being a lowcountry person I've always called them bollards....probably because I grew up on the rivers....as to my money, yes the credit showed up on my card this morning....which prompted me to post the story

details for them.

What do you call them for car/truck/forklift traffic - barricades, guard post? Just curious. I have seen them called guard posts but not as common as bollard.

Good grief. What an adventure.

Had a similar experience a few weeks ago here in NC. Lady in front of us was trying to pay with cash and it kept spitting her money out.

Then she started trying to swipe her card for at least 10 minutes. When that didn’t work she started hitting the machine. Because she was a little older and I had wife and grandkids in car, I exercised extra patience.

She eventually gave up and drove straight thought the car wash and out. In hindsight, I probably should have just got out and paid for hers with my card.

Over the years, I've seen more stupidity, drunkeness and outright bad behavior at boat ramps all over the lowcountry than I care to remember. Yet, none of what I've witnessed compares to what I've seen/experienced in Florida---and more specifically, the Keys.......try that if you're looking to take a walk on the wild side.

Saw a guy back his nice bass boat in the water, and get out of his truck to back the boat off the trailer. As he was backing the boat off, the truck started rolling backwards into the water. By the time the guy got his boat to the dock, the truck was in the water up to the windows. I assume he got it towed out. I'm glad we were already in the water.

while backing my boat into Clark's Hill Lake. It was Spring and the first time I'd taken it out in a while. I put the plug in, took ALL the straps off, and backed her on down the ramp. At this point, I would typically get out, unhook the boat from the winch hook, and dock it so I can go park.

Well, in my zealousness to get on the water, I also unhooked the winch along with all the straps. When I got out to go get on the boat to dock it, it already had some REAL good momentum heading out into the cove...sans captain.

So, yes, I jumped in the water and swam to it...in March. I lost my wedding ring because my hands shrunk from being so cold...and both of my shoes. But, I did get the boat back.

I had fun explaining why I came home with no wedding ring.

Thankfully, no one else was watching.

to back the boat and/or trailer down the ramp. But, he gave up and did it himself. However, he would allow me to drive the boat onto/off of the trailer. And, to pull the boat out of the water with the truck.
