Net Neutrality, why we needed it....the basics:

Dec 14, 2017, 3:07 PM

"Net neutrality is the principle that Internet service providers must treat all data on the Internet the same, and not discriminate or charge differently by user, content, website, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or method of communication.[2] For instance, under these principles, internet service providers are unable to intentionally block, slow down or charge money for specific websites and online content.

The term was coined by Columbia University media law professor Tim Wu in 2003, as an extension of the longstanding concept of a common carrier, which was used to describe the role of telephone systems.[3][4][5][6]

A widely cited example of a violation of net neutrality principles was the Internet service provider Comcast's secret slowing ("throttling") of uploads from peer-to-peer file sharing (P2P) applications by using forged packets.[7] Comcast did not stop blocking these protocols, like BitTorrent, until the FCC ordered them to stop.[8] In another minor example, The Madison River Communications company was fined US$15,000 by the FCC, in 2004, for restricting their customers' access to Vonage, which was rivaling their own services.[9] AT&T was also caught limiting access to FaceTime, so only those users who paid for AT&T's new shared data plans could access the application.[10] In July 2017, Verizon Wireless was accused of throttling after users noticed that videos played on Netflix and Youtube were slower than usual, though Verizon commented that it was conducting "network testing" and that net neutrality rules permit "reasonable network management practices"."

Now that Net Neutrality has been repealed, these behaviors are now legal.

Here's a solution

Dec 14, 2017, 3:12 PM

Make a law to make that illegal if it's that important. Just don't give control of the internet to the gov.

If the government makes that illegal

Dec 14, 2017, 3:18 PM [ in reply to Here's a solution ]

doesn't that also "give control of the internet to the government"

dude, you know there is a HUGE difference b/w

Dec 14, 2017, 3:24 PM

one law and an agency that take control over an entire entity without any accountability to the public.

How would that law be enforced?***

Well, first..

Dec 14, 2017, 3:29 PM

You make a federal agency responsible for enforcing it.

Oh, wait...

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

how any other law is enforced

Dec 14, 2017, 3:32 PM [ in reply to How would that law be enforced?*** ]

How is it enforced if companies collude?
How is it enforced if companies gouge in time of tragedy?
How is it enforced if companies commit fraud to the consumer?
How is it enforced if someone is shot?

I've never been thru any of that but I'm guessing it's through lawsuit or report to better business bureau or just the fbi is informed if necessary. Dont ask me. I've never been thru anything like that before but it should be probably the same route

Collusion/Anti-trust

Dec 14, 2017, 3:37 PM

Collusion/Anti-Trust laws are enforced by the DOJ and/or the FTC bringing a suit. Which I believe is exactly the relief remedy that was in place via the DOJ and the FCC under the net neutrality provision.

No accountability?

Dec 14, 2017, 3:29 PM [ in reply to dude, you know there is a HUGE difference b/w ]

You think it takes longer to repeal a law passed by congress or non regulation rule passed by an executive agency?

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-fordprefect.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, there is no agency make rules with no input

Dec 14, 2017, 3:23 PM [ in reply to If the government makes that illegal ]

or accountability

Re: Here's a solution

Dec 14, 2017, 3:21 PM [ in reply to Here's a solution ]

I do not want the government to be in control of the internet.

The government can screew up a 1 car funeral.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Which is what they did.

Dec 14, 2017, 4:27 PM [ in reply to Here's a solution ]

It’s called the Communications Act of 1934 and it’s been updated several times to keep pace with technology.

People want to get upset at, "the sky is falling" narrative, but what are the true tangible benefits of repealing Net Neutrality from a consumer standpoint? Competition? Doubtful, you telling me these Telecommunication companies lobbied all this money to create competition against themselves? Not sure if serious. Is it because you distrust the government so much? or if it was a red pen that signed vs a blue pen would you be so against it? All I know is you guys are spitting a #### ton of venom at each other, like dang let's just have a discussion about it. It disgusts me these companies provide a platform to access information/content they had ZERO hand in creating, yet make the most profit from it. Create your own ISP though right? On zones already owned by the big guys.
