Why does the scoring player put down her lacrosse stick? But the real question is why the referee picks it up and hands it back to the player?

"Another important difference between men’s and women’s lacrosse sticks concerns the width of the head of the stick. In men’s lacrosse, the maximum width of the head of the stick is four and a half inches. However, in women’s lacrosse, the maximum width of the head of the stick is six and a half inches. This wider head allows for more ball control – which is essential in a non-contact sport like women’s lacrosse."

"These key differences exist because women’s lacrosse is a non-contact sport and the pocket needs to stay much shallower, so women’s lacrosse has stricter rules and is much more careful and weary of illegal temperament with the stick and pocket."

Baseball. Contact vs non- contact, different field size and number of players = different game. different name.

I mean, MLAX is closer to hockey than WLAX in my opinion.
