Are all the SCREEN Passes hurting...

Oct 28, 2013, 11:34 AM

Boyd's rhythm and accuracy down the field? I know a lot can be blamed on no pass protection and young wr's messing up routes. But this wasn't a problem earlier in the year. I think having undersized TE's and RB's to pass protect hurts, having Cooper and Brooks in more on passing plays may be the best option as well...bigger bodies. And maybe less play action fakes that take up some time and not giving Boyd a chance to look down field. I just hope they figure something out soon, all these screens are getting ridiculous imo. Its getting to predictable and teams will figure that out.

He can't hit the screen pass half the time

The TE is a real issue too

that's a legitimate point. I also wish that we'd get RB's

more involved in the short passing game. I get that they have to pass protect but Brooks definitely has the hands and Rod has looked like he can handle himself in space with checkdowns.

I know Legget made a nice catch saturday but we are missing productivity and a threat from TE position. Just not much productivity there this year.

I literally laugh out loud at this kind of stuff

Oct 28, 2013, 11:50 AM

People are backing off so far b/c they don't want to get beat deep, and they are inviting us to get 5-7 yds. a play, and you say "they're gonna figure that out".

Please Chad, throw the ball down the field into that Cov. 4, or that Cov. 4 to the field and 3 to the boundary.

Please Chad, don't take the quick stuff where Sammy can catch and run.

What are you doing Chad. Don't you know if you hit the "x" button twice we'll go turbo and be open deep.

Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner. They're literally giving us 4-6 yards and with Sammy, we have the potential to break one 20-80 on any given play. It also loosens up the middle of the field against the run.

I think a lot of the screen passes were a function of MD

playing so far off our receivers. If the ball gets out there accurately and quickly, it's an automatic 6-7 yards. I think Morris calls those screen passes sometimes if Boyd is struggling to get his confidence level up. Plus it tends to wear down the defensive line having to chase the play from sideline to sideline.

Teams aren't letting us throw deep this year. I wish

Oct 28, 2013, 11:54 AM

we would work some more underneath routes over the middle of the field instead of primarily throwing screen passes, but i think that's partly due to our struggles at TE and the inability to find a guy to replace Jaron Brown. He was the guy that used to work the middle and make tough catches with contact for us.

Jaron Brown was a much bigger loss that people realize. He was a guy who was always in the right place. He ran the right route, which not only got him open, it ensured that his man couldn't cover 2 people, opening up things for Sammy and Nuke. Couple that with solid downfield blocking and great hands and he leaves a big hole. We might have a guy who's faster, or taller, or more athletic, but it will take a year or two before they get to be a complete player. Football is such a team sport and when one guy doesn't do what he's supposed to do, it can blow a play up in the blink of an eye.

I like Legget and Seck...tho he's been struggling lately, but they are built like big wr's, not TE's. I'm just referring to extra pass protection to help the 5 down lineman. That's also a reason they aren't taking shots down field, because of the lack of time. Just because a DB is playing 7-10 yards off the line doesn't mean he won't still get beat deep, obviously that worked fine til the field got shorter in the redzone didn't it? It all starts with pass protection to open up more options.
