I really dont get why teams like Stanford, Harvard etc...

Dec 27, 2012, 10:31 PM

are not the cream of the crop in college football. In my mind, if i was a recruit, the degree from those schools alone would be a solid draw. Heck, it just seems like that would pay dividends for the rest of your life and would be an easy selling point to a top notch recruit. Maybe I'm missing something but just seems that way to me.

Because most high profile recruits don't care about school and major in things like kinesiology.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

People in WV don't worry about kinesiology either...at least

Tutor and Insure

Guess they built the facility after you left.

I did misspell tutor, but ensure was correct.

Unfortunately those gifted with athletic ability are not pushed academically and do not make the grades to attend those universities. I am sure these institutions would attract a lot of high profile recruits if those recruits were also gifted academically.

you must think football players want an education

Stanford has one of the best programs in the country

Re: I really dont get why teams like Stanford, Harvard etc...

Dec 27, 2012, 10:51 PM

How do you really not understand this. These high profile guys don't give a crap about degrees. They are going to get paid millions playing in the NFL. Most do not even graduate. Why waste your time playing at a small program that cannot properly showcase your skills. You shouldn't include Stanford with Harvard for obvious reasons to any common sense college football fan.

Lets see if your a top prospect all but guaranteed a shot at the NFL and making a league minimum of around 300,000 and a very good opportunity to sign a 4 year 50,000,000 dollar contract. You going to waste all of that to go to Harvard. Any Harvard grad would tell that athlete to go make his money. Its the smart thing to do. That means not attending Harvard

That....and a good portion of these guys are "mentally challenged" (trying not to use the "r" word)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Those schools accept and educate students. They don't

Dec 27, 2012, 10:54 PM

want to be a farm league for the NFL. That said, I think Duke does attract great basketball players who are smart. But those kids don't need to weigh 300+ pounds, and they don't need 25 of those players.

AND that said, the SEC clearly has given up on academics.

Re: I really dont get why teams like Stanford, Harvard etc...

There are only about 100 kids a year at the Division 1 level that can get into Duke or Stanford. For those two schools to be successful they have to get 50 of them.
Why can't a school like Duke compete in football? Look at it like this. There's probably one kid on the Duke football team that could play for Alabama. Conversely, there's probably only one kid on the Alabama football team that could get into Duke.

Nice reply. I guess u may be right. Sad really. If I was a bigtime recruit , I'd want the degree too. Guess they lack the grades. I thought there might b more

Re: Ty ashbarton

Dec 27, 2012, 11:19 PM

If you were a big time recruit you would rather play at Duke than say Alabama, Texas, or Oregon? When all you do is play football, why go somewhere where yes you'll play college football but you won't ever have a chance to play in games that really matter (a chance at a national title). Come on man be real. Don't act like these guys don't care at all about an education, they want to win just like anyone who can play football at a high level.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

85% of recruits can't get into those schools***

The reason Harvard isn't a solid draw is no athletic scholarships. The entire Ivy League prohibits them for all sports not just football. If the IL did offer schollies, the likes Duke, Stanford and Vanderbilt would have an even smaller group of athletes to chose from.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I really dont get why teams like Stanford, Harvard etc...

Dec 28, 2012, 6:10 AM

Maybe this will help you?

Harvard recruits STUDENT/athletes. Several others do the same. Those schools give out 4 year scholarships. The students from the start are looking forward to their next 4 yrs. in college.
But most other schools recruit ATHLETE/students. Many of those schools give scholarships for 4 to 1 year duration. The recruits proclaim from high school that they are looking forward to the next three yrs. :)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Harvard doesn't give football scholarships, so that answers

Dec 28, 2012, 8:15 AM

that mystery! :)

Re: Re: We didn't build a whole facility with staff to tudor and

Dec 28, 2012, 8:55 AM

Since TerrierFans is in correction mode, ensure is the proper term, but tudor is not. Don't get too worried about spelling on a message board when "smart" phones and auto correct are often involved.

Dec 28, 2012, 9:23 AM

In the case of Havard, last I knew, the Ivy League schools don't offer athletic scholarships.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I know a recruit that was offered by Duke but

Dec 28, 2012, 9:30 AM

decided on SC State. This kid faired pretty well academically in high school, but I think he was afraid of the Duke academics. 99% of these kids cannot see beyond football, partying, etc.

Ask the folks at Vickery, and you will discover most of our athletes could care less about a degree.

Re: I really dont get why teams like Stanford, Harvard etc...

Dec 28, 2012, 3:47 PM

Schools like Harvard, MIT, etc. could really care less about football.

They're too busy with academics, etc.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I really dont get why teams like Stanford, Harvard etc...

Dec 28, 2012, 5:20 PM

The academies are another great place to find real student athletes. If you can play a sport at either the Naval Academy or West Point that would far outweigh most other offers out there. The vast majority of DI athletes would have no chance of gaining admittance to either of those institutions.
