I plagarized the Howard's Rock story.

I don't think I've told y'all this story before. If I have, I apologize. But, after watching the pre-game ritual it brought my story back to memory.

About 15 years ago I was an assistant football coach for a small high school. We had only had a program for about 5 years and were still trying to build a football mentality into the players. I asked the head coach if I could give a pre-game talk in the locker room before the first game. He agreed.

I had a two by four, a nail and a hammer. I pounded the nail into to board. I held the hammer up to the players and said, "In a match between the hammer and the nail, the hammer always wins." I hit the nail again. I said, "The hammer is the aggressor." Hit the nail again. "The hammer hits the nail. The hammer always wins!"

Then I held the hammer up and said. "Look at this hammer. It doesn't look like much. It's old. The paint is coming off the handle. It looks like its been through a lot. Well, let me tell you something. This is a special hammer. It was my dad's hammer. He never let anybody use it but him. Not long before he died, he gave me this hammer. It's special to me. Tonight, I need you to be my hammer. We're gonna pass this hammer around. If you're willing to be my hammer I want to to take it, hold it up and say, 'I will be your hammer' and then hand it to the guy next to you. But, if you're not willing to be my hammer then keep your grimy paws off my hammer!"

Note: I thought it was a great speech. But, the team went out and got beat 30-6.

I assume that means you returned the hammer back to its special place and never let your players touch it with their grimy paws again.

So, you are saying the nail wins sometimes? I guess the next week you could have given a speech about how you need them to be tough as nails. ;)

I heard a similar speech in HS about the nails and hammer, about a dad telling a son everytime he did something wrong go hammer a nail into the wooden fence and when he did something right, go pull a nail out. When the son finally pulls all the nails out he said look dad I did it, and the dad said but look at the fence son and see all the scars you have caused. Something of that nature.
