We may see just how effective Clemson is with the NIL this year. Not with transfer portal or HS recruits, but with retention.
Several guys are eligible for the NFL draft, but also have another year of eligibility left. FSU has a collective that prioritizes retention. We have 7 guys on the team this year who were eligible for the NFL draft last year. Some were projected to be first round picks, others day two pick and others day 3 picks. We have a sophomore RB (this year) who was a prime candidate to enter the portal. All of them stayed. Obviously, details were not made public. But, it was clear that all are making money this year with NIL deals.
The question, for people like Will Shipley and Beaux Collins, is "Do I want to go to the NFL or return next year?" One of the major factors will be, "How much money will I make in the NFL? How much money will I make if I stay at Clemson? If I stay at Clemson, how much can I improve my draft stock and make more money next year in the NFL?"
NIL collectives are businesses. They, by now, have a pretty good idea of what the "market value" is for a day 1, day 2, and day 3 draft pick. They aren't gonna offer a day 3 draft prospect the same amount they would a day 1 prospect. Those guys aren't stupid. They know how to run a business.
Clemson has done a great job setting up how they operate the NIL. Folks get upset because the Clemson way is low key and basically in the background. But, it is there. It is very active. And, I think we will soon see, it is very effective.
It's not based on paying a HS kid 6 figures to sign in December. It has other, correct, priorities.

I like your reasoning and that all sounds great. Looking forward to seeing the offseason play out. Tbh I’m far more concerned about getting beat in the recruiting stakes by Ga, Fla St, etc. for skill position players down south. When Jeff Scott built a pipeline for receivers out of fla our new up-tempo offense really took off, and I think we’ve seen a notable decline since Ngata amd co took over. Obv qb/o line play plays a big factor but I worry we will remain too one dimensional with a lack of down field threat, by merely retaining the personnel we have now

chance at $10 million?" Nothing is guaranteed once they leave here, so it's a decision that needs to be well-considered, for sure.

Maybe we need to start a "Retention Department" like Spectrum, AT&T, Sirius Radio, etc. The players thinking about transferring because they have another year of eligibility and aren't getting enough NIL money can call, threaten to leave and complain and the Retention Department supervisor can make them a better deal for 12 months....

Paying players is the new world we’re in and I agree that they should receive something. The issue is players are being bought, with no restrictions. There is not another professional sport in the world that doesn’t at least attempt to level the playing field: salary caps, drafts, contracts, etc. Without some of these controls it will be only about which “school” can pay the most.

No one is drafting Shipley, he’s a practice squad signee. He’s gotten slower throughout his Clemson career

Correct. I think Shipley and his family/handlers are aware of that. This is why I think he transfers after the season to another school for a fresh start where he can focus on being a return man.
It's clear he has no future in the NFL as a RB.

Clemson has a pretty good track record of guys coming back for their senior year, even before NIL. The Power Rangers, ETN, are just a few. We had a couple stay this year in TD and Ruke. If we can be competitive using the NIL collective, we should see that trend continue.

1) bretfsu® ... do you really see Beau Collins having draft options similar to Keon Coleman? I'm a big fan of Beau's -- he's a class act with communication skills. Still I believe frosh Hunter Brown and injured Collins are the Tigers top two receivers. Unsure Beaux gets drafted if he runs over a 4.57 forty.
2) Tigers and all colleges can pay NIL to sub-NFL players. The NIL market is young and will develop into a quid pro quo market. But for now, the market is based upon player potential and goodwill.
3) I heard former UGA head coach and current staff analyst Jim Donnan (Kirby's former coach HC) speak the other night. Several interesting NIL tidbits. Donnan said younger players are out earning upperclassmen creating some ripples. Also said a Mizz high school d-lineman (future NFL top 15 pick) will earn more at Mizz than any current UGA player. And because Mizz state congress has passed NIL high school payments, the kid is already earning mega bucks from Mizz collective.
