I'm gonna catch heat for saying this but

Aug 26, 2013, 11:26 PM

Truth be told, I know we all loved Andre Ellington and he was a fine back but I really thought hotrod was better. Some people acted like we lost so much when Andre left. And we did lose a good player but... I don't think the position dropped off. If anything, I actually think it'll be better than last year. But that's me.

I dunno.....

Andre was mighty special. If Hot Rod is 3/4 as good, he will be mighty dayum good.

funny, I remember many saying AE was better than CJ

Aug 26, 2013, 11:28 PM

with our offense the RB doesn't have to win it, they just have to control it, not turn it over or miss blocks

NOT turning it over and catching the crucial chip blocks is so essential. Most ppl miss the significance of this in RBs. CJ was one of a kind. He could do it all...

I'll never forget AE's game against Auburn...

Aug 26, 2013, 11:37 PM

He earned the moniker 'relentless.' That kid just refused to go down. Andre was very humble during his time here at Clemson. He didn't appear to want the lime light...just like Nuk.

I think Hot Rod has a lot of Charisma. That will be infectious with the rest of the offense. It's like Hot Rod takes everything personal. There is no doubt in my mind that Hot Rod will have a few 'wow' highlight reels. Am I ready to proclaim him the best back to ever grace Death Valley? No. But I would say there is not much, if any, drop off with Hot Rod taking over the reigns.

AE was a special player.

He always seemed to be getting at least 4 yards a clip. Never knew him to ever really lose yardage. He probably had a very high career Avg yards Per Carry.

A very good Clemson running back

I do not agree...

Aug 26, 2013, 11:39 PM

In terms of speed, agility, power, pure running ability, maybe Hot Rod is as good or slightly better (even that i'm not sure about), but hot rod (at least based on last year) was not nearly as good in pass protection, was more inclined to fumble the ball and (IMO) wasn't as good at finding the hole and hitting it as AE was. Hopefully Hot Rod has improved and will be better in some of those areas this year, but last year, he was much more of a liability when he was on the field than AE.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, in all fairness, AE had his spells of butter fingers

Aug 26, 2013, 11:48 PM

as well, especially at inopportune times. The Orange Bowl goal line and LSU game come to mind. I agree that Hot Rod did go side to side a few times in games, trying too hard to find a crease instead of just lowering his head and picking up a yard or two. But I certainly wouldn't say that AE was above and beyond a much better back. His experience and pass protection earned him the starter role imo. Hot Rod more than displayed his capability against USuC before he was inexplicably abandoned in the second half.

must have been an aggravating injury but AE declined steadil

Aug 26, 2013, 11:43 PM

While Hot Rod ended up the better runner. And I hope he continues improving - he definitely has more fire and determination. I will always appreciate AE - especially that awesome Auburn game - and hope he has fine Pro career!

I've said that more than once. No fear in HR and he runs hard. I believe HR has stronger legs than Ellington. And I'm not trying to take nothing from Ellington, he was a good RB for us.

I remember a few times mistaking Andre for CJ

Aug 27, 2013, 12:35 AM

Similar build and style. I agree with the Auburn comment. Great game for him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I mistook Hot Rod for Andre last year. Announcers did too***

NO FARMERS NO FOOD

If only AE was the RB he was as a Soph his entire career

Aug 27, 2013, 7:50 AM

Ellington was a good RB for us, but he was a straight up stud RB his Soph more year until he hurt his foot. He hit the hole better that year better than any RB I've ever seen at Clemson and that includes Spiller. However IMO, we never saw that AE again. His ball security, blocking, and pass catching all got better throughout his career, but I felt he lost a lot of that "burst" as a runner that he had his Sophomore year. He will be missed, but IMO Hot Rod has more big play ability than AE had as a runner last year. I'm just not sure yet Hot Rod has the blocking and intangibles that AE consistently gave us. We'll find out soon.

Andre could pick up a blitz like a beast.***

There's something in these hills.

I think this was possibly his greatest asset.

Aug 27, 2013, 8:44 AM

And Tajh wouldn't have completed passes or escaped the pocket nearly as much as he did without AE back there.

The Heat called...said you're right... it's coming for you..

Aug 27, 2013, 8:12 AM

HotRod has a ways to go to catch AE.
