How would Dabo handle Clowney?

Oct 7, 2013, 6:07 AM

I believe he'd either tell him to participate in EVERY practice and get after it in games or pack his bags. What's going on in Cola with preferential treatment for "superstars" is a disaster in the making. If they don't rein him in, they're staring down the barrel of an 8-4 season, getting clobbered by the Tigers and the beginning of the end of the Spurrier regime. Couldn't happen to a more deserving team...

You think Dabo would pack his bags? Would he volunteer to fold his laundry, too?

If the Gamecocks go 8-4 I'll buy you a pony.

I absolutely believe Dabo would tell him if he's not going to be a team player, he can hit the road. I think most coahes would, Louie.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them fall to an 8-4 season.

Oct 7, 2013, 9:37 AM

9-3 is their best case scenario. Arky, UT, Missouri, UT and the Tigers will all likely eat them alive if they keep playing like this. Truth is, they aren't that good and without a committed Clowney, they are worse. The meltdown is coming....

Trade Him!
Oh,wait Clowney's not a pro yet!
Seriously.Sit him.
Have him watch his stock, which has allready dropped,
drop even further.
Have him see his [possible overall] first pick in the draft drop farther down the picking order.
Of course,we could all hope he would pack his bags on his own, can't we?

Re: How would Dabo handle Clowney?

Oct 7, 2013, 6:42 AM

I don't necessarily think Dabo would tell him to pack his bags. One thing is for sure, he would have to earn his spot back! He wouldn't just be given a free pass to play if he felt like it. That is not the example Clemson gives their students. If you want something, you have to earn it!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If Clowney won't play then he won't

Oct 7, 2013, 6:45 AM

Go to class. What does he have to do to stay eligible?

Re: If Clowney won't play then he won't

Oct 7, 2013, 7:16 AM

I would be surprised if he's still going to classes......assuming he ever did. They have a serious situation on their hands when a starter tells the coaches he isn't going to play right before they hit the field. I do not, for one second, believe our staff would put up with that.

Look at how Dabo has gotten the attention of the players he has
Not calling any names but when Dabo became HC he did tell a few whom were not playing to the level he knew they could if it did not change they would no longer be Clemson Tigers

Not sure...remember Kyle Parker?

Oct 7, 2013, 7:21 AM

Coach Swinney seems to have learned from past mistakes, but let's not forget 2010. It was obvious Kyle Parker mailed in the season and was ready to move on to MLB, but Coach wouldn't bench him. I also remember a large percentage of our fanbase being irate when KP was announced as the starter for the Charlotte Bowl.

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

If you're going to call names use all the facts, KP played hurt after the Auburn Game, don't know if you have ever had broken ribs but there not the same as a hang-nail
Should Dabo have let him play hurt is more the ?

Bowlhunter you should read instead of post! That way you don't look like someone that's confused.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not confused

Oct 7, 2013, 8:50 AM

I remember the mumblings of bitterness coming from our locker room due to preferential treatment. That was part of the reason KP left the stadium like he did after the Scar game.

Oct 7, 2013, 7:57 AM

Clownboy tried to commit on his official visit but Dabo told him don't do it unless he was all in for tree years. At that point clownboy proudly committed, but dabo turned him down because he knew he would act like this his junior year?

I don't understand why you're defending a kid who flat out quit on your whole program...

Clown Man

Oct 7, 2013, 8:05 AM

If I was Spurrier, and that's a scary thought, I would sit him too, say to the kid, " hey if you won't participate that's fine but I will ruin your draft position by taking your name through the mud by telling scouts you're a cancer in a locker room" that'll sure drop him out of top ten pick money. Dabo puts team first, Clemson first as he should. This is a program not a superstar player and a supporting cast. Dabo is awesome, Spurrier hanging by a thread

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think they lose 4 games, but we will see how

Oct 7, 2013, 8:13 AM

they do on this 3 game road swing. I don't think Florida will beat them in Columbia, they will be up for that game and Clowney may even considering suiting up.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

THis isnt a recent development

Oct 7, 2013, 8:44 AM

This is a problem that has been brewing since he got there. Maybe not in the sense that he knew he wouldnt play this year. But they probably allowed him a long leash and didnt lay down the law with him. So slowly he felt like he could do what he wanted, everything from calling out coaches for not using him the way he wants to be used to talking trash, and now the excuses

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Spurriers isn't going to be happy....

Oct 7, 2013, 8:58 AM

How did he handle Kyle Parker?

Oct 7, 2013, 9:19 AM

A very similar situation.

Parker had big bucks coming his way.

Clowney has big bucks coming his way.

Parker got dinged up and started protecting himself.

Clowney got dinged up and has gone into me first mode.

Parker quit listening to coaching (or at least it appeared that he did)

Clowney has apparently quit listening to anyone other than his agent.

Dabo let Parker be recognized with the seniors on Senior day and never "cut him loose."

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There is definitely a difference

Oct 7, 2013, 9:54 AM

Ask yourself this...how much experience did Dabo have as a head coach during Kyle Parker's last year? Was his job in danger? Compare that to Steve Spurrier's current situation.

Also, did Kyle Parker quit practicing with the team? Did Kyle Parker sit himself down before a game without the knowledge of the OC?

Re: There is definitely a difference

Oct 8, 2013, 7:27 AM

Kyle Parker did become a prima donna, thanks to Dabo's ridiculous bragging about him having an "NFL arm" etc. I remember Parker walking off the field twice after being taken out and pouting by himself, away from the team. A couple of times he also walked right by Dabo, when the HC was apparently chewing him out for his mistakes. I've always been convinced that Dabo played Parker instead of Boyd, because of Kyle coming back to football, instead of taking those big bucks in baseball that year. However, I believe Dabo has matured as a coach, and would not make the same mistake again!

Re: How did he handle Kyle Parker?

Oct 8, 2013, 6:00 AM [ in reply to How did he handle Kyle Parker? ]

I remember Kyle playing tentatively after he got hurt but he certainly didn't quit on his team. Huge difference, in my eyes. Clowney probably has somebody whispering in his ear....maybe his mama....maybe Jay-Z....or maybe he has just enough sense to realize he could lose millions if he got hurt playing on an 8-4 team with nothing to play for but a crappy bowl. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he announced next week he is having foot surgery and canning the season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The Clown is still in the Heisman talk, right?

Oct 7, 2013, 9:53 AM

The SI poster boy and the ESecPN hype put so much crap into the Clown's head that he couldn't get to the bank fast enough to start cashing those checks.

Let's see how he handles the pro life in the NFL.

Oct 7, 2013, 10:54 AM

put him down to the media.

If a player tells Dabo or any coach he can't go, it's accepted.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-jospehg.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dabo did handle him, so did Saban.

Oct 7, 2013, 10:59 AM

Dabo told him he'd have to go to prep school, then Saban told him he couldn't get him in all before he committed to USuC. USuC was not his first choice, some of us have been saying it for 3 years, now validated.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think Dabo would have handled it differently from the beginning

Oct 8, 2013, 8:43 AM

I just can't see one of his players ever getting like this. I also think Dabo would never take a player he thought would do this.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Had Clowney come to Clemson...

Oct 8, 2013, 9:30 AM

...I firmly believe things would not have wandered down their current path. Everything from the guidance of coaches and teammates to the dual focus of athletics and academics would have been different.

He would not have made himself an object of scorn with quotes that other players are "afraid" of him. He would have been immersed in a culture that honors team and dedication to a greater good, rather than self-aggrandizement.

Clowney would have been just as imposing a player, but he would have been a better man and teammate. And there is nothing I have seen in my long life as a Son of Clemson that would make me think otherwise.

More's the pity for a supremely talented young man who will never know just how good he could have been.
