I won't name the user that used that phrase in another thread on this board. When I read it, I did a double-take.
But that phrasing perfect captures the contempt that right-wing America has for other Americans who live in big cities in this country. They see them as subhuman and un-American. They can't stand the fact that these people exist, let alone that they vote.
You see this language among Trump's base. And you also see it with prominent GOP politicians.
And the right-wing wonders why urban areas don't vote with them. It's hard to get people that you explicitly hate to support you.

But it's worse now than it was earlier in my life.
I think most people who live in rural areas and in cities and in suburbs are good people.
And while there's some good reasons for rural people to have resementments, there's also reason for city people to feel that they are unfairly targeted. And when it comes to actual politicians giving speeches and sound bites, I think the bigger problem currently is on the side of the GOP.

You want to show a monolithic "urban hellscape" narrative. And then people like you will wonder why more urban people don't vote for the GOP or for Trump.
I can tell you I've spent time in some of the cities you linked, and there are some very vibrant economies, and many good areas.
Urban and suburban areas are places of diversity and entrepreneurship. They're also places with families and churches and schools. And they are great engines for this country.

I love rural areas and rural people.
The problem I'm talking about is the hatred of cities and the people in cities that I sometimes see expressed by the hard-right and their politicians. There's no good reason for it, other than cruelty. And this country can't exist without great urban areas, just like it can't exist without rural areas.

The kinds of comments that are routinely made by right-wing politicians about big cities are not nearly as often reciprocated from the Left.
And Hillary did not insult rural America. She talked all the time about rural development policies in her campaign.
Her one comment on "deplorables" within the overall Trump movement was a general comment, and not a comment about rural people. She shouldn't have said that. But geez, look at how Trump characterizes the left in general as "vermin"....Look at comments by JD VAnce, MTG, Tuberville, and many others. It's very common for right-wing politicians to insult urban areas and urban people.

Get a clue...we don't hate people in the cities. This is the singular mindset of lefties. It's crazy.
We hate the policies put in place by the people running the cities. These policies are what cause the issues we are seeing in some parts of some large cities.
Lawlessness, smash and grab, steal less than a $1000 and get away with it, and it goes on and on...

Cities have done very well in the last few decades. They've been growing, and have on average become more safe, and have developed alot of very nice areas, with alot of good restaurants and cultural attractions. I'm not here to say there are no problems in cities. But the "urban hellscape" narrative is very outdated for the most part.
Rural areas, OTOH, have been hurt economically. They are less healthy, with fewer opportunities, and they suffer from brain drain when their best students leave for more metro areas.
Rural areas need help. And they have a right to be angry at corporations that closed down operations and hollowed out those areas.
Parts of urban areas need help, too. But what urban areas don't need is a political party whose politicians insult them all the time.

You obviously read this B.S. and believe it. I used to walk and go anywhere in Chicago and today no so much. My son and daughter still live just outside the city and they and their families will not go there and venture out. If you go, do what you have to and stay on the tourist streets.
Don't get me wrong, I loved Chicago and going all over the city on foot when I lived up there. I felt as safe as being in Greenville, but don't let the 2024 tourist add commercials fool you. It's not the same today.

And cities like SF & NYC, which I've spent time in both, have lower murder rates than much of rural and red America.
