First time I've seen a highlight reel that included plays from the Orange White game dude.
Good memories.

Bowden definitely got the ball rolling on upgrading the facilities which was desperately needed at the time but he was really a very mediocre coach. The only reason he's viewed in an even somewhat favorable light is because of his record against the USUC and 63-17. He was just another in a line of average coaches after Ford. His winning percentage while HC at Clemson was .615 overall and .573 in conference. Tommy West's was .525 overall and .525 in conference for comparison.

that tommy was sooo close to turning that corner OR getting over that hump. he just couldn't get there. what a shame. fine Christian man he is. dabo is carrying on that legacy in such a fine way. adding to what tommy started. and I'll add...
tommy Bowden was a huge upgrade over what came before him besides frank howard and our main man danny ford. anyone remember the sports illustrated article that said something to the effect of "whats that rising in the south?" with a picture of woody and the tigers as the lead in to the article? I remember that article and the excitement surrounding hiring a Bowden that was coming off a 11-0 season at Tulane. go rich rod and tommy Bowden. heres to hoping that tommy gets back into coaching and gets over that hump. 63-17. ~

Rich Rod left and CTB couldn't make the right hire like Dabo has done and that's what did him in. Rich Rod was the best coach on the staff not Tommy. He did do some good things for Clemson just not on the field consistently. We got the urban name while under his watch!

If you think Dado is the best (or 3rd best for that matter) coach on this staff then you need your head examined. TB couldn't replace rich rod. Dabo did well replacing himself. Other than that, they're the same guy.....except Bowdens obviously struggle with real estate.

Not that video, but giving a buddy my ticket for a dreary Thursday night game in Winston Salem and telling him I just can't drive 3 hours to watch a dead coach walking complete another uninspired coaching performance and watch us lose....thanks Tommy but bigger thanks for firing him finally.

Without Tommy, we wouldn't be where we are now.

People like to rag on him, but they are a little clueless in doing so. Sure TB had reached his ceiling, thought Dabo was wasting his time recruiting CJ ,figured 8-9 wins was the best to be done at Clemson, but the positives on the road to where we are now can't be denied.
1-With his hiring and the Bowden name, Clemson was back in the national spotlight. A spot we'd been out of for over a decade.
2-Hiring Brad Scott , not only kept Daddy from bringing him back to FSU,but it got us his recruiting connections and more importantly,Jeff went to Clemson instead of FSU.
3-He convinced the Administration that money had to be spent on facilities upgrades to compete. At that time , our administration would just as soon as of kept football in it's place and would have continued spending all that money football was bringing in on everything but football.
4-Lastly, Dabo was out of coaching, TB brought him back into coaching.
5-Almost forgot, Streeter and Elliot were TB players, now Dabo coaches.

He was a zombie the last couple of years.

Remember his biggest moment the last couple of years being throwing a tantrum about a call? Everybody got excited because it confirmed Tommy still did have a pulse out there. I never cared for him. I thought he was the smug Bowden out of the bunch and not the laid back folksy kind of Bowden. Just my opinion....

did for Clemson. Agreeing that he should have been fired a year or 2 before he actually was doesn't change that. Beating USuC saved his job a couple of times. That's why, even though I didn't like USuC's recent streak,I wasn't losing my mind over it every year because Dabo had gotten us over the hump that Bowden couldn't

football program.
it is not where it is today without coach bowden. clemson did not need a great coach in '99, clemson needed someone with the juice, pedigree, experience and background to pull clemson through the dark ages of the 90s - the admin was leery of the evils of big time football and for good reason.
he was a big time hire when it was made and the administration listened if only for his name.

Tulane and parlayed that into a Clemson job, a lot of money, and then autopilot the last few years of his existence here. I'm not sure I had ever been more ready for a coach to go in any level of sport or for the team I pull for.

That terminology is usually used for coaches who spurn the university for another or one who leaves with conflicts with fan base. Trailing off and hitting your ceiling is not grounds for hating him. That's stupid. I like him, he just hit a plateau but his credits far outweigh his faults....no question. Why don't people hate tommy west? He sucked way worse. But you never hear that

And hating are two different things. I fear the same fate for jack leggett. He will be hated and is hated by many supposed clemson fans. But he's done nothing to warrant hatred. Do FSU fans hate bobby Bowden? He sucked toward the end. Are FSU fans more sophisticated than clemson fans? I sure hope not but saying you hate someone for not getting the job done, meaning championships, is weird. If he embezzled money or molested kids or talked junk after he left then I could get it . you're not the only one I know but it's just a puzzling thing for me to understand. Jack leggett is another that's done more good than bad, call for him to retire or move on is fine but to constantly downgrade his citizenship as a Clemson man/family member is just dumb/ignorant/remedial.

I just see on here all the time and wish it would stop. Some people treat brad brownell, jack leggett, tommy Bowden, etc. like they were al queda or something. Makes our fan base look like idiots. But hey it is a Internet forum of some of our schools brightest minds and greatest anonymous coaches so I am expected way too much. I'll move along.

understand some of the knee jerk or in the moment stuff, but there comes a time i'd like to believe the venom would diminish, people could enjoy the moment & how the program came to where it is today.
it's still not there yet, but a lot of water has passed under the bridge since '98-99.
