Talking to a coot yesterday

Allow me to vent...
He started talking smack since they've beaten us the last 4 years. I told him that I congratulate him on the best 4 years in coot foosball, but he should enjoy every second of it because their little day in the sun is over.
The tide will begin to turn back in our favor starting this season, and don't be surprised if we pull off a nice little 3 or 4 (or more) win streak over the next few years. The coots clearly have had the best era of their "program" over the last 4 years, but their window of opportunity to make a splash in the SEC is closed. The more dominant teams in their division have been down over the last few years; teams like Florida, Tennessee, and Georgia have not quite performed at the level that they're known for and that was the best shot the coots had to do something (couldn't get it done). Last season, the coots had quite a bit of upper classmen (especially on the defensive side) to really cap off their little "dynasty" over the last 4 years. I think they'll return to their normal 7-5, 8-4 form beginning this year, and Spurrier will be looking to retire after this subpar season, or next year.
But enough about them, let's talk about Clemson. I'm always cautious of over hyping myself, and expecting too much from our boys. But this year just smells different to me. Tajh, in my opinion, is the best QB to ever play in DV. The supporting cast and coaches he has on offense really have me stoked for this season. I think our defense will take a HUGE step forward this season much like the offense did in 2011. They may not be a lockdown, shut em up defense yet, but it should be a major improvement over last season. Venables 2nd year, and the additions and changes to the secondary personnel make me very excited to see the product on the field this fall.
I don't want to read too much in the tea leaves this year, and the hype this offseason is eerily reminiscent of the 2008 disaster, but this just feels different.
Am I alone on this?

I agree about our team this year

We've got the talent and the coaching to make some serious noise. UGA will be a huge indication of how well the coaches can prepare the team and how physical our boys are ready to be. Our front 7 is solid and I've heard that Venables is comfortable with playing 8 LBs in a game at this time. The DL is probably as deep as it's ever been we just need some stars to emerge at the DE position. DT is will a strength as it began to be at the end of last year. The secondary will be better just by virtue of having 3 of our starters healthy again in Robinson, Jenkins, and Breeland. Add in the talented group we signed last year and you can expect Alexander, Wiggins, Kearse and maybe Baker to play this year.

about the Georgia game. That will be the barometer of what to expect this season. And it comes early. If we win, do we run the table? If we lose, can we still accomplish an amazing season?

If we win then the only teams to worry about are FSU, GT, SC

I don't believe FSU will be as good as some think just because they have to replace their entire D more or less and are breaking in a RS freshmen in DV. GT just because they always give us problems though I feel that Venables and our D finally are ready for it. SC because while I don't believe they'll be as good as they were last year, they'll still be talented and it's at their place. That being said if we beat UGA I wouldn't be surprised if we run the table. If we lose, I still wouldn't be surprised if we beat the rest of our schedule. We showed last year that we're better at bouncing back from disappointing defeats

return of the injured players. Martin Jenkins was our best and most physical corner by the end of 2011. Plus, we should be a little more athletic and faster at the safety positions.

Coots think Les Miles' mistakes are the only reason we won

And that gave us delusional visions of being a good team. Oh, and they are also into the "LSU didn't want to be there," even though LSU players were dropping on the ground after playing so hard to win.

Keep in mind this is the best Clemson run in history on paper with wins, ACC titles in the expanded ACC, opportunity to play top ranked teams, wins over top ranked teams, etc.
Everyone would look much more graceful during the losing streak to simply state hey you got us, we are building a dynasty and you got a few wins. Good for you we will get to play you again with more and more talent see what happens then.
Don't waste your time talking about USC best run in school history when many Clemson old timers would say this is by far the best Clemson has ever looked as well.

This has been a good run but I wouldn't say this is the best we have looked. On paper the wins are impressive, but we have fielded better teams. 1981....and you can't forget 1987 to 1990 years.....10 win seasons 4 yrs in a row.....if DF had stayed we probably would've won another NC...

1981-1983 - 30 wins, 2 losses, MNC 1986-1990 - 57 wins, 12 losses, 3 ties, 4 conf championships, bowl wins vs Stanford, Penn State, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Illinois 2011-2012 - 22 wins, 6 losses, bowl win vs LSU and a very embarrassing bowl loss to West Virginia.
"By far the best Clemson has ever looked"? Far from it. And I'm one of those old-timers.

Winning in the 80s in the ACC is a joke compared to the quality of teams and players that have been put on the field at DV lately.
just ask Dabo, he is saying this is the best time and teams in Clemson history.

Son, you gotta be about 50 to really remember the DV of the eighties. I'm not about to insult what's happening in Clemson these days but there's one thing for sure.
There ain't no more Woodys, Bear Bryants, Joe Pa's or Dr Tom's to beat.

The ACC was pretty good back then...state, Md UNC...plus Clemson played about even with UGA and we beat USuC a lot in that decade...no way any 1980 era tiger team would lose to WVA 70-33...ask Major Harris

What is it that makes you believe our run is over? We are still recruiting well and are stocking up in positions of need. Our coaching staff is the beat it has been in SOSs tenure. So why the decline?

It won't necessarily manifest on the field this year, but you will inevitably see the decline that hits all programs whose coaches linger on into older age. As he approaches 70 it will be easier and easier to convince top level recruits that they are unlikely to have him remain as the coach for the duration of their time at the school. Any coaching change is a dangerous proposition, especially in a conference as competitive as the SEC. In all seriousness, can you name me a single school that had a coach retire of their own volition and were able to maintain an average number of wins over the next, say 5 years as they did in the previous 5? At some point you're fighting the process, not just your own history, so it is probably more rational to expect a decline in SCaR fortunes over the next 10 years than to expect otherwise.
Here is my projection. You'll be good, not great, this year but with your schedule it'll be enough for another 10 win season. But, as is already evident recruiting for 2014 takes its first major step back and first non top 25 recruiting class since 2004. Due to not losing much from this years team SCar will still be strong in 2014 but fails to reach double digits wins due to a harder schedule. Now - Spurrier either gets out now or hangs on for one last hurrah. Problem being you lose a ton of experience after 2014 and the 2014 and 2015 recuiting classes will be more reminiscent of Spurriers start at SCar than the last three years. Then you get to enjoy a couple decades of the coaching carousel while you demand a coach bring you a level of achievement that you've never actually achieved - even under Spurrier. And for the record, despite the apologies, Lee Corso is still right.
