Deep Thoughts on Clemson Football - Offense specifically

Nov 7, 2022, 8:52 AM

Many have touched on it, but we've been spoiled by good luck, largely. We had two "generational" quarterbacks that actually panned out as they were expected to, if not better. They had incredible athletes around them in WR and RB. For the most part, all of those people stayed healthy. We had consistency all across the offense.

DJ looked to be another one of those QBs. Five star, great athlete, highly recruited, high character. His first few games his freshman year showed that all of the hype was accurate and we went into the 2021 season with high expectations of him - and the media did, too, putting him on way-too-early Heisman lists. And then reality set in.

I don't know any details, and none of us really do, but it seems a perfect storm set in for him. Troubles at home - on the other side of the country, at that - and all of the emotional and psychological issues that go with that seemed to hit him hard. Combine that with high expectations, coming off of the crazy COVID year, an incredibly inconsistent offense around him due to inexperience and injury, coordinator changes, and who knows what else, and here we are. (I also wonder if maybe our attempts at QB development, that worked for Watson, Lawrence, and even Bryant, for some reason just didn't click with DJ)

I don't "blame" DJ. I really believe he's doing the best he can, but the inconsistency just isn't good for anyone, particularly the coaches who are trying to develop and offense and play calling around him. I believe he still has that 5-star greatness in him, but for who-knows-why he just can't pull it out consistently. I really feel sorry for the kid. It sounds like he's been doing everything the coaches have asked him to do and that he's been working his tail off (and 30 lbs off!).

Short story - we've had many intangibles go in our favor the last 7 years. No team will always be dealt those great hands to play, and we did for several years in a row. As far as recruiting, we thought we had it all covered. There's no way to know how a kid (and they are just that - kids) will play out and develop until they're in the pit and dealing with it all. Not everyone will meet expectations, for whatever reason. And this year, we are running in to that with WR and with QB, which allows defenses to focus more on shutting down our running game, which is the one place where everything seems to be good.

Good stuff. I still honestly and with all due respect to all the DJ apologists, don’t want to see him play ever again. He is way to high maintenance emotionally, mentally, whatever. I’d rather take my lumps with Cade than lose him to the #### portal.

He’s been here three years and the staff has not managed to get him to be better

Nov 7, 2022, 8:57 AM

They should move on from him right now, no matter what

Georgia is smashing people with a 4 foot 10 walk on who doesn’t have a 10th of the talent of Kayde or DJ

I think that's a more than reasonable take . . . and yet . .

Nov 7, 2022, 9:01 AM

the question still remains, why do we call plays like we do? Why do we seem to be simply **waiting** for DJ to simply up and, out of no where, play better consistently? Doesn't that just put more unnecessary pressure on him, basically telling him it's all on him? Why not let him ever roll out. Why now throw short routes over the middle? Why not do something that isn't bland, repetitive, and expected by every arm-chair DC and every ACTUAL DC who's watched us play for a couple of quarters.

Whatever the aspects of this that are out of our control, it's inexcusable for Streeter and/or Dabo to be running the offense like DJ is going to catch fire any minute. It's a waste.

That's the million dollar question

Nov 7, 2022, 9:12 AM

left to the million dollar coach.

My guess is that Streeter never knows what version of DJ to expect on a Saturday so he designs plays to the lowest common denominator and does the best he thinks he can with those limitations, rather than designing plays that will challenge DJ and bring the best athlete possible out of him. I think DJ needs to be saddled with the expectations that he's proven he can fulfill, but he needs to figure out the consistency. Play-calling down to him won't help that. Design the plays to the best of his potential and if he can't make it happen, sit him down and bring in Cade, and we'll just have to deal with that one.

That’s the problem, we can cater an offense to suit DJ because he is slow, mostly inaccurate, and doesn’t seem to like contact which makes his giant frame unusable. He hasn’t shown that he can hit any type of pass consistently from screens to posts to 5 yard outs. He’s a nice guy but it is easy to forget that when you watch what we have been forced to accept as offense the past 2 years. I know the OL and the WR have not been good, but the QB affects the entire Offense. There is a reason we came back and beat Syracuse and Cade only had to throw it about 4 times. It’s the Mentality that is affected.

With this pitiful offense, one cannot truthfully pencil in any sure wins because you must score points to win. Dabo always seems to leave DJ in long enough to hurt us. This week, I would declare the QB position open and play all QB's and see who is best. I would do this on gameday also. Don't leave a QB in a game if he is not progressing. Find one who can.

It's true that not every recruit will pan out, but we have had A LOT of misses the last 3 years or so, to the point that either our assessment is poor, our development is poor, or both are poor.

When we have a 5-star qb, 5-star rb, and at least 2 5-star wr on the field at any time, moving the ball shouldn't be such a tortured process. That talent should translate into more opportunity, not less, more options, not fewer. But as it is, this is what we can do right now with all that talent:

Run up the middle (Shipley is a fine rb but not a workhorse type. He's not built to run it 30 times a game)
screen pass to the sideline
50/50 ball with no separation
qb rush

I shudder to think where we would be without Williams emerging in the slot and Allen and Briningstool developing. No question that has helped this year compared to last. But at some point these other guys, or at least one or two of them, need to start producing on their own, as their published talent indicates they should be able to do.

many teams across the country w/o "generational QBs"......

Nov 7, 2022, 9:11 AM

that can scheme with what they have.

I believe our COACHES were spoiled with so much talent that they gradually flatlined the offensive identity.

Chad Morris comes in and immediately attracts the WRs and QBs to run a fast pace high scoring offense.............over the years our coaches realize they need to rely less on scheme and gradually depleted the "playbook"/gameplan/what have you........fast forward to present day and we have a depleted talent pool (compared to 2011-2018 skill position wise) and NO SCHEME/IDENTITY.

My thoughts keep going to 'what about HJ12?' - is he an option? DJU is fragile at times.... loses confidence, inconsistent. But Cade hasn't looked good outside of mop-up vs GT. Furman was 3-and-out stuff. LATech - more erratic and 3-and-out. Hunter J is 5 yr veteran with good arm, good foot speed. Is he even an option at all?
