I love playing the bass, never owned one.

Can anyone give me tips on possibly purchasing one?
What kind of price range should I look for for each "level" of quality. I don't want to play professionally, but I'm not just playing around and learning either.
What about amps?

i dont know why they still make them. There seems to be 1000 in ever shop i go in.
but I would not drop retail price on the first instrument. Maybe after you get good and decide its something you want to pursue.

Find a Guitar Center, get help and demo some basses there, then go to eBay, Musician's Friend or Craigslist to get it for maximum cheapness. hth
