If the "First-hand Account" by the son of Lukas0722
Sep 6, 2012, 8:44 AM
|
|
is accurate--and I have no reason to doubt it is--Dabo should be having a chat with the dean. Clearly, CK needs a talking to as well, but what college professor thinks it's a good idea to address an incident like the one described by calling the kid out in class the next day? I mean, HOLY MOSES! Obviously, CK has a short fuse. So, naturally, the brainiac prof strikes a match and lights said fuse. Is he intentionally trying to incite CK so he can screw with the football program? Just what is this DA's agenda? I'd be in the dean's office wanting a word.
I'd also have CK in my office. But that is a different issue entirely.

the prof should have never mentioned anything about the situation to the class or even in public. It was completely uncalled for and unprofessional. If he wanted to talk to CK he should have pulled him aside or talked to him after class.
CK needs his butt chewed on by Dabo and he needs to see some extra conditioning after practice til he learns how to act in public.

please man... you weren't there so you don't know if CK was still being boisterous and acting like an idiot. After what i've heard from this kid he's a idiot that needs his tale kicked a couple of times to get his head screwed on straight. He still thinks he's the man like he was in HighSchool. Anyone threatening to fight outside the classroom should be dealt with. This ain't the parking lot... go to class and shut up CK.

According to my reading comprehension, the student who witnessed it all did not include a recounting of CK instigating the lecture from the prof. As I read it, the prof, in his questionable wisdom, decided to bring it up in a public way so that he could say what he wanted to CK without having to confront him in private. Makes me think the pansy prof was too afraid of Chad to discuss it with him without doing it in front of a group of witnesses.
I agree, CK has anger management issues. That is not the point of my OP.

And yet the eyewitness said the prof "called CK out" in front of the class. While no names were called, the prof's intention was obvious to the witness. My guess is, it was obvious to everyone present. Still, that's not my point. The OP was all about intentionally lighting a short fuse. What do you expect to happen? And that leads me to wonder about the prof's motives/agenda. Does he dislike CK and tried to provoke him so he could make trouble for him? Heck, it may be that I wouldn't like CK either. That wouldn't excuse unprofessional behavior from me.

Chad Kelly like a child and a victim. He's a grown man that showed his @ss in an academic building. He needs to toughen up and shut up. Good for the professor for having a teachable moment to TEACH these kids about acceptable social behavior. You freaking liberal hippies make me sick.

I think many are too quick to condemn the professor. I have no idea of the context of the whole thing, but the student who witnessed it said the professor was complimentary of the way the baseball player handled it. So it doesn't sound like the prof is out to get athletes. Also, it seems Dabo downplayed it a litlle saying it was two stuendents yelling at each other and no big deal. According to the student who witnessed it, Chad also yelled at the professor. Perhaps the prof did handle it all wrong. For those who are teachers on any level however, you know the discipline problems in many classrooms today. I'm willing to cut the prof some sslack on what I have heard of this so far.

"Perhaps the prof did handle it all wrong."
Ya think? That was the point of my OP. Knowing CK has a short fuse, why in the world would you call him out after the fact in manner in which the prof did? If you felt you needed to interject your wisdom, why not do it in a private conversation? According to the eyewitness account, the prof acted in a cowardly fashion and instigated another incident needlessly. A mature adult should have been able to ask CK for a word in private and then expressed his concerns without evoking an emotional outburst.

i would be shocked if there aren't guidelines/rules in place on clemson's campus to address student "distress". there are on most if not every college campus; can you imagine why?
the ones i've seen are 2 fold. if danger is imminent, call the po po, if it's not, contact the proper authority.
do you want the po po involved? do you want this on some admin's desk? or do you want the professor to address this in open air without calling anyone out.
and apparently, no one was called out. http://www.tigernet.com/forums/message.jspa?messageID=12709520

Doesn't really apply here because saying that CK started it is pure speculation. Regardless, making our better players look like idiots in the middle of class doesn't really seem like a recipe for winning football.

harrassing the players and Dabo does NOT need to create one. You do not want Dabo reporting to higher authorities to "tell" on professors. That will sour relations very quickly. More importantly, the professor is not Dabo's concern. Chad is. This incident (again, assuming it has been accurately portrayed) is an opportunity for Dabo to explain just exactly what is expected in terms of public conduct of all Clemson Tigers, particularly quarterbacks and future potential leaders of the team.

I agree that there are persistent issues with CK that must be/probably are being addressed. Nevertheless, you have to wonder what in the world the prof was thinking. Surely you would agree that, according to the eyewitness account, the situation was handled very poorly, especially since the eyewitness said the original incident occurred "after class" and "outside the building." For the prof to revisit the situation days later and criticize CK in front of the class while praising the other student athlete is incendiary. Why in the world would he do that?

My post only concerns how Dabo should handle the situation.

Disagree. At real football schools, the academic types are made to understand what brings home the bacon. If the prof doesn't like it, perhaps he should try Northwestern or Vanderbilt.

Sounds to me that Kelly has been creating an atmosphere of silliness that goes beyond the argument with some baseball player. I don't fault the professor unless he personally called out Kelly's name. Even then, no staff member or student at Clemson needs to put up with Kelly's hoodie wearin', Vanilla Ice-ish juvenile buttswag. If the young man can't get over his kiddie crap and grow up, he has no business attending THE University in South Carolina. Hopefully he'll wise up and mature, but I have my doubts. If he doesn't, I just hope Dabo or the school launches his ridiculous tail somewhere else before he jacks up team chemistry.

+1 I agree that CK has issues that need to be resolved before it's too late. Like other posters have pointed out, where there's smoke there's fire. CK has made too many "headlines" for my liking. That is a separate matter, however.
I still question the prof's methods. They don't seem quite professional to me.

If account is accurate:
CK showed his #### after class on Friday for all to see. Prof brought it up as a teachable moment the next time the class met with CK there. (I'm guessing CK wasn't in class on Labor Day or something happened on Wed. that brought the subject up again.)
The fact that CK laid his head on his desk and went to sleep tells a lot alot about the kid as well.
If you do anything to the Prof over this - we'll have a Stephen Garcia on OUR hands.

that CK started something after class on Friday - so the prof had no chance to say anything on Friday.
Monday was Labor Day - either no class or CK wasn't there (kids who sleep in class often find excuses to miss them).
So on Wed (5 days later, but the first time the class was all together) - the prof made it a point to say the behavior displayed on Friday would not be tolerated. CK took it from there...
You know he got kicked off his high school team, right? I wouldn't jump so quickly to blame the prof.

And you either don't understand the point my OP or you're choosing to ignore it. I'll put it another way. There may very well have been an issue that needed to be addressed with Chad. He maybe needed a warning about his behavior. I would like to know why the prof chose to handle it in such an incendiary way. The eyewitness stated emphatically that the prof called Chad out in front of the class and also praised the maturity of the baseball player. Do you really think the prof wasn't trying to evoke another emotional outburst from Chad? That is unprofessional, IMO, and I would address it if I were Dabo. I surely would be addressing the situation with Chad, too.
My point, in case you are still unclear about it, is that the prof seems to be just as immature as Chad.

it's early in the semester and he (sadly) has to deal with a disciplinary issue. Chad loves the spot light...though the professor never named him. The professor had a chance to establish to everyone what is acceptable. Where do you people work? Where I work praise is given and criticism as well. Should Dabo pull Chad aside in practice when he throws a pick or chew his butt out in the open?

If I were a prof and I saw someone trying to start a fight (I don't care who it is) - I would call him out in front of the class. Like this:
Hey Chad - I saw you try to start a fight with that other fellow on Friday. You can rest assured that I will not tolerate that from you or anyone else in this class.
A mature kid with respect for authority would have apologized at that point - an immature kid with no respect for authority would have mouthed back (which is what happened - apparently).

entire class to go by as well. What is Chad going to do when Bart Wright, the rest of the media, the coaches and the fans are on his ###? This is a good opportunity to see how he takes the heat. He failed miserably! Chad has chosen the public eye, he must also deal with it in such a manner as to not throw Clemson under the bus! Now the media knows he will blow his cool, some such as Kroncoot will use that against him one day. He has got to grow a thicker skin!

You know as much about this professor as you do about what Kelley was bitching about. Naturally you go conspiracy theory and assume the professor is trying to mess with the football program. Give me a break.
Swag Kelly needs to grow a pair and quit being an idiot. End of story.

What I "know" is what I read from an eyewitness. In case you didn't see it, take a look: http://www.tigernet.com/forums/thread.jspa?forumID=1&threadID=1138019&messageID=12709333#12709333
As for my "conspiracy theory," I did pose it in the form of a question and followed up with another question: Just what is this DA's agenda?
My point is clear: the prof threw a match on the tinder. According to the eyewitness the prof saw the altercation outside of class on Friday. Why didn't he intervene then? Why wait until he can lecture CK in front of the class?
At best, the prof is a coward. At worst he has an agenda. Either way, his handling of the situation is very unprofessional, IMO.

but didn't make it in time? Or just assume he didn't try to take action? And, if Kelly didn't wear his feelings on his sleeve and get into ANOTHER confrontation, the prof would not have had to address the situation. Chad forced the action the prof took, be they right or wrong!

Hmmmm. We could not have read the eyewitness account any differently. The eyewitness says the prof saw the altercation on Friday. Whether he tried to intervene, I don't know. I'll give you that possibility. What happened in the classroom on Wed., however, was the prof's doing. CK reacted, but it was the prof who stirred the pot.
If he was going to address the situation, it should have been in private. Doing it the way he did was stupid.

both men are teachers. Part of Coach V's public display is to send the message to the other players. Part of the Professor's display is to send a message to the other students. Both are trying to correct a negative behavior.

I think it could have been handled better by all. I also think perpetuating the topic makes us all look like a bunch of 14 yr old girls.
Whoever called/texted the cops need to be charged with wrongly dialing/texting 911. It ain't something till someone makes it something, Dabo, paraphrased.
