Is it time to review the fans on the field policy?

Regarding the fans rushing the field, post-game:
Look, I'm a fan, and I understand that fans love access to Clemson players, coaches...etc. I also understand the unique attraction and connection that Clemson has to its fans and vice versa. I understand all that, perfectly.
Yet, the video of the idiotic/goofy behavior of one fan - while the head coach is being interviewed on national TV just after the win over Louisville - makes me wonder if it's time to reconsider the policy.
Here's the video: http://m.espn.go.com/general/blogs/blogpost?blogname=acc&id=75699
Let me just say that I'm a fan of fans...particularly Clemson fans...but I can't help but wonder if it's time for the fans-on-the-field policy to be reviewed.
It's completely disrespectful to have the head coach being interviewed - and that sort of behavior going on behind him. I was happy to see the troopers eventually surround Coach Swinney and provide security as he spoke to an ESPN reporter after the game.
Also, I feel like the safety of the players and the coaching staff should be more of a concern.
In full disclosure, however, one of the best Clemson souvenirs that I have is the 1978 Clemson football media guide signed by QB Steve Fuller just after the 41-23 Clemson win (at home) over South Carolina in November 1978. It was really cool to be able to obtain something like that, so I understand the tradition and sensitivity regarding field access after home games.
Yet, maybe times have changed. Is too much access a bad thing, perhaps? These "flash mob" moments following home games make me wonder.
Is it time to review the all-access policy?

Can you imagine a crazy coot going Tanya Harding on Deshaun Watson? 9/11 could have prevented if some unpopular decisions were made.

I don't think he was comparing it to 911.
He was saying 911 is proof that times have changed.

Good mention on the 911 connection. The theories are endless...

I think they need to be better at enforcing when people rush

the field, parents need to hold back their children who seem to be the fastest at rushing the field.
Despite several announcements to wait until the opposing team is leaving the field, the mob is already there before the coaches even shake hands.

Good point. It's the "mob rush" that's a problem.
Oct 12, 2014, 4:44 PM
|
|
Then, there are the other problems that come up after the mob gets on the field...and the other team, it's coaches...etc are still there.
This is not a popular thing to discuss. The Justin "Beaver" looking kid on the ESPN video of Dabo's post game reaction was ridiculous.

I see your point but our culture is one of a big family. It's also a part of what makes DV a special and intimidating venue that we as fans feel a sense of ownership. I believe the security for the coaches and players is effective without being obtrusive. Until an event happens or situations occur to cause the university to review the policy, then and only then should the policy be changed.

Dude...let it go. I don't need the plastic bag to read "this is not a toy" to know not to put it over my head but your statement reminds me of how ridiculous and pussified our culture has become.
The only harm done by that young mad was to make a fool out of himself on national TV. Big whoop!

Still, the games are not a small gathering over at Wofford.
There's a reason that most Division One schools, NFL, MLB...etc generally don't allow it. I understand the argument that this is what makes Clemson different. Different isn't *always* good, in my opinion...in this case, specifically. Not many major schools deliberately put their coaches, players, and other teams in the middle of a post game mosh pit.
Order is the precise opposite of pussified. My "panties" were military brown for over a quarter century, btw. Does 5,000 posts on here qualifies as a testosterone boost?
You're not that guy who ran the bases behind Hank Aaron when he broke Babe Ruth's record are you?

No need to change the fans on field issues, but Clemson should look to create a PR-bubble when coaches and/or players are going to be interviewed after games.
The kid who did all that is a fool and very immature no matter his actual age. My 5 year old makes thsoe same faces and she is immature compared to others her age. So the dipSh$t kid who chose to make an A$$ out of himself truly is at fault.
Cannot control him or any one elese, but Clemson can control the PR-ness of the situation. That is why the troopers started to get the kid out of the way.
I did not like when Clemson beat Auburn in Clemson and while Dabo is being interviewed, so guy thought the best way to congratulate him is to put his big mitt on Dabo's head and shake it, like he is telling an 8 year old kid "Good Job."
But there is no cure for stupidity except perhaps Darwinism.

You don't see Saban put in this position...or it's rare.
That Auburn game is a good example of what I'm referring to....to avoid.

Overall, though, one older kid that was having a dumb teenage moment doesn't mean we need huge changes. I'd like to see the band wait a bit longer to allow people on the field before doing the alma mater. They announce that the players need to shake hands before joining the team on the field before the alma mater. If you waited for the hand shake, there's not enough time to get on the field for the alma mater.
I'd like to see a little more security around the key coaches and players. Particularly in the first few minutes and for any interviews.
After that, it's mostly just individuals that need to learn self control.

Yes, the fans on the field to sing the Alma mater is a good thing, IMO.
Agree with your other points, but I'm not sure how they would *ever* stop that initial flood of people that takes place immediately after the clock hits zero.

We have gradually relaxed those restrictions. It is a #### shame a few idiots ruin things for the rest of us. Kids (13 and under) love it and I think it helps make them lifelong fans
