Good point about Brownell
Mar 18, 2017, 8:54 PM

I have been pretty hard on Brownell.
But one person pointed out that he got donors excited and got facilities improvements done. Good kids in the program, good graduation.
And in that light, he does deserve my respect.
So thank you, Mr. Brownell for helping Clemson in that way.

Got donors excited enough to pull off the upgrades.
For a while he had the best winning percentage of any Clemson coach.

I missed where we finished in the top 8 of the ACC or made the NCAA tournament. Winning matters.

Brownell has finished in the top 8 of the ACC 4 of his 7 years as our coach:
In order since 2011: 4th, 7th, 11th, 6th, 9th, 7th, 12th
His average conference finish over the course of his 7 years is 8th.

47% of BBs ACC wins have come against WF, BC, and GT

throw in VT and over 50% of his wins are against those 4...
The fact that he has averaged an 8th place finish, given that stat, shows you how the unbalanced schedule has BENEFITED him... it's not the gauntlet you keep referring to.
but c'mon--- 47% against those 3 and you are going to keep beating that drum?

Can you do a similar breakdown for all the coaches
Mar 18, 2017, 10:04 PM
|
|
you listed as well as the ACC records by team for each of the years those coaches played them, how many of those ACC teams made the NCAAT, and what was the success rate of each of those ACC teams on the season and in the tournament? Likewise, can you list the SOS for Clemson and all those other teams during the years you cited those coaches? Then you may have a decent point, otherwise your 47% "stat" is utterly meaningless and has zero context. Thanks in advance.

GT made it in 2010, no?

Not that any of that really means a whole bunch in the overall longterm comparison of those coaches though. And so what if 47% of Brownell's wins came against those teams? Were the other coaches ACC records against ACC teams who didn't make the tourney mentioned anywhere?

Those teams were in worse shape than us

More than 50% of his ACC wins came against the worst four teams over his time frame here. More than 20% against Tech alone. Tech I don't think has made the tourney since its championship game run and has fired two coaches in Brad's tenure

Okay, so he won 53% of his games against teams that were

better than us? Is that what that "47%" means?
Again, until the same comparison is done for all the coaches that were cited, then it means nothing.
Look, if we change Brad tomorrow I will be fine with that. A case can be certainly made for that. But when you look more closely at it, we were a 3-pt shot away against VT and Syracuse from making the tournament. I remember a couple years ago when an absolutely bizarre ending against Pitt in the last game of the season kept us out of the tourney, and there was a another year we made the NIT where we should have made the NCAAT as well.
There is no doubt Brownell has been snakebit. Some very bad fortune and bounces in his tenure. But again, no sweat if we make a change.

His past record is part of what's going on
Mar 18, 2017, 10:36 PM
|

but we're also talking about the future. On paper at least, is there any objective way to say we're better next year? If not, are we waiting on year nine? What are the chances then?
This year they couldn't close out games, repeatedly. That's more than snakebit. I don't know what's going to happen, but if he stays, it's pretty much a no win situation barring a miraculous improvement from the team next year.
It's never pleasant to have a well liked, well respected man in this situation. But this is the business side. If not this year, it's almost assuredly happening next year. So why even bother?

9-23 in games decided by 6 pts. or less in the last 3 years and 0-12 against the top 9 ACC teams this year isn't being snakebit

You are Zion Williamsons father. By the way he played basketball at Clemson. Given the current state of our program and the other big time programs wanting your son, would you encourage him to go to Clemson? His best NBA chances would be at Kansas or UNC. He's probably one and done but worth signing. Graduating from college is not in the equation. A new young recruiter is more likely to get a player like this . Brownell wouldn't have a clue.

So with fans like Tiger Michael cutting down the coach, why would Zion Williamson's dad want his kid to play at Clemson. I wonder if he even attends the games.

Why did C.J. Spiller or Tajh Boyd come to Clemson?

Both could have gone to much better programs with a much better chance of playing for conference titles and in BCS bowl games.

Dabo was a much better recruiter than Brownell will ever be. He would never be comfortable with winning one title. The point I'm trying to make is that Zion or any other top Recruit knows that Brownell is on a hot seat. You can add another year to Brownells contract but fans and recruits will see that it is a scam. Real improvement has to happen quick like next year or Brownell won't see the end of the contract. Cut him loose now and bring in a good recruiter with an exciting offense . That will give us a chance to land kids like Zion.

Bowden and Leggett say hello. They were nice guys too and had their fan clubs. Would any of you Brownell supporters want them back? Brownell is just like them. Winning not being close matters.
