Why coaching at elite level is so hard. Travis injury.

Elite coaches know X and O stuff. They know how to break down film and develop a game plan. They know how to organize practices to implement the game plan. They know how to evaluate talent and how to recruit talent. They even know how to get a good handle on character.

But, here is one of the hardest jobs they have - motivating players to play well, regardless of the circumstances.

Here is what I posted on an FSU message board this morning.

After sleeping on it my thoughts on the Travis injury haven't changed a whole lot.

1. It was a clean play. UNA did nothing dirty.
2. It was just an unfortunate injury. It happens in football.

Now, to my opinion of the underlying cause.

The defense was just not ready to play. They came out sleepwalking. They knew they were so superior to UNA that they could play a D+ game and win by 20. So, instead of coming out with the attitude of, "We're gonna jump on these guys, blast them from the opening whistle and let the reserves play" they came out with a ho-hum attitude.

Because they did, the score was 13-0 and the team needed a spark. Where have they got the spark all year? From the legs of JT. So, coaches called a run for him. If the score is 0-0 no way is JT running the ball.

So, who is to blame for the lackluster effort at the beginning of the game? Sure, it is the players. But, ultimately, it falls on the coaches. It is the coaches job to get the guys ready to play. And, for whatever reason, they weren't ready to play.

I suspect there will be a lot of self-scouting among the coaching staff today. I'm not gonna point fingers at any particular coach or group of coaches because I'm not in the meetings all week. But, there is no doubt in my mind that Norvell and Fuller and Atkins will be pointing fingers, starting with themselves.

How do you feel about your new starting QB?

He is a quality #2.

We will be favored going to play UF. (We would be favored even if Graham Mertz was healthy.) But, he ain't no Travis.

He will be a redshirt senior next year and will go into Spring as the #1 guy, but it will be an open competition, not a given.

Great assessment, totally agree.

Out of curiosity, what was the response to this on the FSU boards?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Great question.

Virtually everyone agrees the players came out flat, offense and defense, at the beginning of the game.

1. Easy opponent. We can name the score. (Heck, we scored 58 on them anyway.)
2. Senior Day. Players focused on honoring seniors, not on the opponent.

Very few are specifically pointing the root cause being the coaches failed in their responsibility to have them come out fired up and ready to jump on them and put them away early.

And, don't get me wrong. I'm not calling for any coach to be fired over this. It is a "teachable moment" for the players AND the coaches. It's one of those "I'll never let that happen again" moments.

I'm sorry Brett, but FSU just isn't that good.

Even Clemson should have beat them this year.

They've got some nice pieces and Norvell had them ready to play this year. Of course, Travis is the X-factor who is now gone, but that's it. The committee members shouldn't let FSU in. We all know why.

What will be sorta interesting is next year. Looks like a return to pre-Jimbo again.

had playmakers all over the field on both sides of the ball. FSU's defense is average. Their offense is average. RB, slightly above average... Their QB is Cole stoudt pre-OSU.

Yes, as I said several times, they weren't winning a playoff game***

Yup, they probably won’t beat Louisville in Charlotte.

Before the season started I thought our ceiling would be 11-2 including losing the ACC championship game.

Now, we are guaranteed to do at least that.

None of us had any idea that Coleman would be as good as he is. We were hopeful Travis would be a very good QB, but none of us expected him to have as great a season as he has had.

On the other hand, our OL has not lived up to expectations. (Some of that due to injuries, but most due to talent.)

I also agree with you on Clemson. Clemson should have won that game. Clemson is the best team we have played all year. Clemson, without turnovers, would have won the ACC this year. But, Clemson is also better than any team in the B1G or Big 12.

In August my hope was we would finish 11-1, losing to Clemson, then having a rematch in Charlotte. I considered that a very successful year. I thought we were still a year away from competing with Clemson. (I'm pretty sure I said that on this board last August.)

This FSU team has exceeded my expectations. No matter what happens the next 2 games (3 counting the bowl game) it will be a great year for FSU football.

These next 3 games are going to tell you all you need to know about Norvell. Can Norvell coach when he doesn't have the best player(s) on the field? I think Travis has played above his head all season. I think that has a lot to do with Norvell putting them in successful situations. That's the definition of good coaching. Great coaching does that when there is a smaller margin or even a deficit.

We all know part of college coaching is just out talenting your competition by recruiting, developing and now transfers. He's done well in most of those areas. He's going to have his hands full with UF, L'ville and their bowl/CFP opponent. Those teams will have play makers.

I'm not an FSU sympathizer. The only team/coach I don't despise that has a chance to get in is Washington. UGA has hit a switch lately. I didn't think Beck would be what he's been this season. Unless Michigan or Ohio State proves to be better than they have looked this year, I think we see a 3peat.

For my part, FSU deserves each win they have. I hope they beat the snot outta Fla and enjoy continued success in post season play.

We've got talent, but we clearly had issues. I can't have sour grapes from FSU for us playing stupid. And because we played so stupid so consistently, I can't get upset that our post season outlook is pretty grim.

The stupid we've played in no way excuses our losses and nothing will ever excuse a loss to the coots. I hope we've got stupid more or less outta the team now.

Karma for buying a team in the offseason to win the conference. The 2022 FSU team loses by 17 to Clemson this year if you didn’t go buy a team in the offseason. Hopefully you miss the playoffs

Half the board is annoyed Clemson didn’t get offensive help in the portal to avoid what we have seen this year. The other half just won’t say it. I do feel resentment towards FSU because what they have done with all those endless players would have put them in the Death Penalty not very long ago. But it’s ok now…

It’s not hard to to buy players from other schools. I know Travis was a transfer, but was developed at FSU. But all the other ones? The FSU program would still be burning in the dumpster if it weren’t for the awful transfer rule. I don’t feel good about programs built on other teams players. Maybe his unfortunate injury is karma?

Maybe you shouldn't play the key starters at all against a pushover. I know that's unconventional thinking but why do it? I didn't think FSU was going to win it all but now that's a certainty.
