Kurt Warner Post

I have the luxury of also being a Falcons fan. If you guys haven't been keeping up, they are also 4-4 on the season. Unbelievably, red zone turnovers have been killing them, along with very little offensive output. I ran across this Kurt Warner post this morning. It hit home with many of the same issues the Tigers are facing.

This has been a frustrating season, with a lot of parallels to this year’s Tiger football team.

FSU Scoop And Score

This immediately came to mind when I saw the first two plays. That fumble by Klubnik in the FSU was not completely his fault. It was a missed assignment that allowed an FSU defender to run untouched into the backfield. That's why it's so frustrating to hear about "turnovers" losing the game. Coaching and execution has put ourselves in a position to lose by turnovers. It's not some magical thing or bad luck.

But, one big difference.

The FSU play the pressure came from a LB who was split out into coverage. It was closer to a CB blitz. The first two plays on the video, it was a DE who came unblocked. How do you not block a DE on a pass play?

You're correct. The Falcons play was much worse- the TE should've been benched for the rest of the game- but I think you get my point. The players should be coached to recognize these blitzes to prevent getting their QB blind sided. And maybe we do pick up on it 98% of the time- I don't study game film. Maybe that's why Mafa isn't on the field as often. Maybe Klubnick didn't play more last season because he doesn't recognize these things. I'm no expert, but I've learned so much more from watching 2.5 seasons of crappy football than ever before.

Yeah, didn't mean they were the same breakdown, just similar. However, it does point to the moving parts of the scheme and execution. That's why I've posted previously that if the QB doesn't know the protection scheme, he should. Warner also points out that even if the QB is aware they are going hot to one side or the other, if the route combinations don't match going hot to that area, the QB is still hosed. None of us are in the headsets or at practice so it's hard to know which pieces are the true problem(s).

I do know that if you are going to leave the DE unblocked you SHOULD be doing one of 2 things, reading him and making him commit to a run fake or decoy OR a hard rollout away from him. On both of the blindside hits Cade has taken, he doesn't seem to have an urgency to unload the ball. So he's got a terrible clock in his head, doesn't know/understand the protection scheme, expects that blitzer to be picked up or expects one of the receivers to be hot that isn't. That's a lot of possibilities.

I hope somebody with enough All 22 footage will do a breakdown of the run game. Or if somebody has access to the footage and can let me know how to get it, I'll do it.

One thing we all agree on....

....When the play is a pass, you never leave the DE unblocked....that is, unless you're looking for an excuse to change quarterbacks.

I love listening to guys who know football talk X and O stuff.

I like the way Kurt didn't just try to take the blame off the QB and assign it to someone else. (OL, WR, RB) He just pointed out that It's easy to blame the QB, but it's not always right. As someone once said, "There's plenty of blame to go around."

My very uneducated eye, if I had just seen the video without his commentary, I would have blamed the OL for a poor scheme, along with poor execution.

The questions I had were
1. How do you leave a DE unblocked if it isn't some sort of play where you are reading the DE?
2. How do you have 4 down linemen and allow pressure straight up the middle? Why is the center doubling teaming a ST while MIKE runs right by him?

But, I could be just as wrong in my questions. Cause I haven't got a clue as to what is actually going on.

Especially when it isn't even a gap overload! That dude is a free runner right off the snap and I don't even think anybody breathed on him!

As for similar breakdowns with the Tigers, I can't get a read on Cade to tell from his body language where the breakdown is either. Usually a QB will bark at whoever is supposed to pick up that guy but I don't see Cade doing that. Might not be his style or maybe it's 100% on him and that's why you don't see it.

Many of the same questions that I have. Each player has an assignment on every play. Sometimes they may miss a block, not fully execute a block, or fail to make their assignment, but the results are the same usually. The play gets blown up. One of the biggest mistakes I have seen in football from peewee to the pros is for example a pulling guard or other player leading interference for a runner not blocking the first defender that he sees, thinking the runner will avoid him or the defender will not make the play. I've also seen linemen let a guy run right by them thinking the running back will block him, much like what has happened several times to Cade. Regardless, we can't continue to allow these same mistakes or we will not win another game this year!

Ultimately, the coaches have to take responsibility for what happens on the field. Sure we have had a number of individual players that contributed to poor play, but we can't continue to blame it on, "it's just one of those years".
