Free throw coach

Feb 19, 2013, 1:39 PM

With as bad a CU shoots free throws shouldn't we have a coach whose sole job is to teach the frundamentals of shooting free throws? It could only help. Our team absolutely stinks from the line. And, we have for the 40 years I've been a fan of CU. Lord, how many close games could we win if we could shoot 75% from the line?? Watch our players technique at the line, pathetic is the only word that comes to mind for me.

Heck, 70% would have won many of our close losses through the years.

I've always wondered this. They should just hire me because I can consistently make 10 in a row. No joke. I've just mastered it I guess. :)

does that qualify me to coach ....LOL, but it does cause me much agony watching us shoot FTs.

From what I've always heard...

Since practice time is limited, practicing free throws is largely up to the player to practice on their own. It can often be a reflection of how much time a player is putting in on their own.

FT shooting can be taught, and form is not as important as repeating your own form. You can be a good FT shooter with bad form. It is important to practice FTs with fatigue and pressure. Unless you create those two things in practice, you are only addressing a small part of the problem. Most D1 players can hit FTs in practice. Shooting FTs in a empty gym with nothing on the line will only help to a small degree. Most pressure in practice comes from your peers and the threat of the bench. With most players, the biggest motivator in sports is the bench.

I played college ball and was average from foul line at 75 to 80%. There are several basic mechanics to foul shooting in order to maintain a 75% plus average. You must always maintain balance through the shot. You must not miss left or right. You must involve your whole body in the rhythem of the shot. And there are many more aspects of the proper form for foul shots. There is ONE COMMON FACTOR in Clemson foul shooting: The lack of the proper arch on the shot. Most of the players have a flat arch which highly reduces your shooting per centage. To correct this you must NOT see your hands if after you complete the shot. If you see them, your arch is too flat.

Booker! Quit sling shooting your foul shots utiling only your fore arm and hand.

Makes absolute sense to me.

It's all about the stroke. Clarence Carter is blind & he can

So why can't each of our players develop a stroke which they can always repeat?
