for those who think stoudt should be the starter.......Why?

Sep 8, 2014, 10:39 AM

just curious

is it only because he hasn't done anything to lose it?

i would like to see "football reasons" but if that's the only thing you can come up with that's ok.

It's simple DW is the best QB Clemson has. That's all!

Sep 8, 2014, 10:46 AM

The coaches who see them every day, know them best and have perhaps the most pressing need to win games have said he's the starter.

When and if they change their mind so will I.

You asked a question. I gave you my opinion (which you asked for).

Perhaps, just perhaps, the guys who know more about the competition for starting QB than you or I, are in the absolute best position to decide this.

But you are right that the discussion is fine, and I'm not throwing stones at you for it. Perhaps you should consider refraining from doing the same towards those of us who are choosing to trust the coaches.

if not tommy bowden would still be here

and yes you're right choosing to trust the coaches is a valid answer it just doesn't add much to the discussion...............do you or have you EVER question the coaches? not personally, but have you ever said something like "they probably shouldn't have called that play".......if you haven't then i guess every coach is PERFECT to you

Sep 8, 2014, 11:18 AM [ in reply to coaches mess up and make mistakes too........ ]

I'm a fan, and have watched a ton of Clemson football in my time. I've seen some very odd choices and of course some glaring mistakes (the Justin Miller at QB at Duke fiasco comes to mind).

Again, I'm not shutting down your discussion. Have at it. You asked an opinion, and I'm answering what you asked.

But, in this case we are basing a discussion on a tiny portion of the data that the coaches have available. That was my point, and I think it's a valid one.

Re: That's easy

Sep 8, 2014, 11:15 AM [ in reply to That's easy ]

Agreed! We don't see the whole body of work. I do like what I have seen from Watson, but it is a very limited look that I have had of him. They see the whole body of work.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

has anyone "not liked" what they've seen out of dwatson?

Sep 8, 2014, 11:22 AM

other than the miscommunication with kitt & the misread on the option, he's been pretty much spot on, but that's what they expect when he gets his chance.

the fire and take a chance on screwing his head up permanently.

The coaches knew that they had with Watson in the spring. But they also know that there is a serviceable 5th year senior that can help ease Watson's introduction to D1 football.

Happens all the time, and I think that the coaches are doing it perfectly.

Watson will be the starter as soon as they feel comfortable that he's mentally ready to handle it.

As a note, didn't Morris just say in one of his last interviews that they see he is mentally ready...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep. Naming Watson the starter today going into Tallahassee

would be a bad idea.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

probably the best answer I'll see, but.......

Sep 8, 2014, 11:02 AM [ in reply to Simply so that you don't throw a true freshman fully into ]

even the coaches have said he's mentally ready and there's not a playbook issue.

evidence being pulling your "clear cut starter" in the uga game down by 7 on the road.

I would like to think they are "working him in slowly" to take over eventually, but i've seen NOTHING from dabo that tells me he'll make the move:

a. b/c he wouldn't want to hurt stoudt's feelings
b. b/c starting watson would indirectly show that they were "wrong"

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My take

Sep 8, 2014, 11:13 AM

1) Of course the coaches are saying those things. They will say he's mentally ready to help build him up. They will say he has the whole playbook available publicly because you don't tell the opponent he may be limited. Not saying either of those things are either true or untrue, but they are both coach-speak and make prefect sense in that context.

2) They didn't "pull" the starter. The brought in the second QB as scripted.

3) This season will play out and we'll see what happens at the QB position. There certainly appears to me, as a fan, to be a big upside to giving Watson playing time, and he may well be the starter by the end of the season. But the problem with the debate is you have framed it in such a way that no matter the outcome you will claim to be right. If Watson is the starter at some point this season you will claim "See, I told ya so", if not you'll claim "See, I told ya Dabo is too loyal to do the right thing."

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

no, if dabo makes watson the "clear #1 QB" and treats him...

Sep 8, 2014, 11:17 AM

like it.............ie giving him starter minutes and benching him when/if the game gets out of hand

I will applaud dabo for doing the right thing

b/c my biggest concern is that dabo doesn't have the guts to possibly "hurt cole's feelings" b/c he's "put in the time"

I think what he's doing to stoudt NOW is unfair, if he's "clear cut #1" then treat him like he did tajh last year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I disagree with your assessment of Dabo...

Sep 8, 2014, 11:43 AM [ in reply to no, if dabo makes watson the "clear #1 QB" and treats him... ]

I don't think that anything about Dabo or his history says that he is "afraid" to admit that he is wrong or to do the right thing. In contrast i believe that he has gone out of his way to do the right thing in the face of controversy. It would be easier from a P.R. standpoint to start Watson so that he could shut everyone up, but that doesn't mean it is the best thing to do. Dabo has consistently shown that he will do what is right for the program and the player, even if many others disagree. Is he or will he be perfect? No, but Dabo is a man of principle and I think you are way off base with your assessment here. If you want to say Watson should be starting now that is fine but your argument that he is afraid to bench Cole doesn't hold water. You don't get to Dabo's position and success if you are afraid to make difficult choices. Further, I think that if you have a little patience you will get what you want. Deshawn will start before this season is over. Not because Cole is bad but because Watson is that good. If I had to guess it will be at home against North Carolina but could come later. In my opinion, it is not a good idea to put the full pressure of the program on a young man on the road against teams like Georgia and FSU no matter how mature or talented you think he is. I doubt that we win at Georgia just because he starts btw. He played in the second half and struggled just like Cole. DW needs Cole right now and the coaches know that. He will be the starter soon, I think we can all see that he is a tremendous talent.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well ... He can't Seem to hit a vertical route in stride !

better to complete the pass than not complete it and that often means under throwing the coverage or the receiver when he's wide open like a scott or williams on the sideline.

When you force receivers to stand and wait on the ball while any separation from the defender is negated its a poor throw . If you think otherwise your stupid . What's the point of getting separation at the line of scrimmage in press man coverage to have it cast aside ... Really man come on ... Wake up .. Understand the game and routes called .

FSU SECONDARY KILLED US WITH PRESS MAN AT LINE OF SCRIMMAGE LAST YEAR .... AND WILL ATTEMPT SO AGAIN WITH OUR YOUTH ON THE FIELD !!!

Against man coverage, I agree entirely.

In zone, when you're looking for a spot to camp and take the ball, that's the name of the game.

Sep 8, 2014, 11:24 AM

As none of us are at practices nor know preparation of all these guys, here is what is the likely situation:

CS has shown the ability to handle different situations, manage the team, support his teammates, whatever - better than DW.

As even the coaches have said - DW is the future, the $1m question is obviously when that will be. Arm strength, quickness, etc. DW is on a different level. That said, and I don't think it is just because CS is a "senior" - the coaches did/do NOT think DW will give the best chance to win.

Do I think that will happen soon? Yep...does that mean the coaches were wrong in not starting him sooner? Nope...but we'll obviously never know. Good conversation for years to come discussing over a beer, but what I find annoying is the assumption that CS is only starting due only to seniority.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There's no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people who ask questions.
