I doubt there will be much in the way of independent music venues in South Carolina in a few more years.

TO ALL OUR CUSTOMERS
DUE TO THE SOUTH CAROLINA LIQUOR INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS, WE ARE REGRETTABLY HAVING TO CLOSE OUR DOORS EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY. IT HAS BEEN A WONDERFUL 29 YEARS. THANK YOU!

We stop at a red light and the car next to us has 3 young ladies (a 9, a 7, and a 5). Somehow we had enough time for a conversation where we met in another parking lot. We ended up at the Blind Horse and the hot one became my psycho girlfriend for about 5 months.

but I've also read about the rapid closure of many small live music venues in UK:
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/mar/11/british-nightlife-taylor-swift-venues-artists

I have to wonder if it's specifically the confluence of three things---IMO, in this order:

1. Isolation. People just do not go out for entertainment anymore. It used to be enough to have a space with a bar with a band, 4 domestic beer selections, a trough to pee in, and maybe some hot wings. Going to a ballpark to watch a weekend game with hotdogs, peanuts, and beer was all you expected. But now both of these have to sit within a centralized entertainment district to draw a crowd, full of escape rooms, paint & sip experiences, and craft popcorn stalls. It's just too much time, effort, and $$ to go now, and choose to splurge on Uber Eats & catch the highlights on YouTube instead.

2. The death of rock music, and rock radio stations. I love rock music, but take a look a the current top-40. Back when I was in my 20's, everybody knew the top-10. But I'd bet that if you took a poll of Clemson students today, less than 10% would have listened to a single song on this list. How many of these have you even heard? These bands would tour and get heavy promotion from radio stations, which have a fraction of the audience, today. Now, it's a fringe genre with no cohesive, mainstream audience.

3. Inflation. Rents, cost of goods, and the cost of owning & operating these venues, to your point, have gone through the roof. It's not a coincidence that that's happening while real estate prices in SC are through the roof---it's by design.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Those things definitely contribute.

I was in TTT last November when a band played on top of the two front pool tables. Obviously, the place was full of college kids (except me) and the music band played was primarily rock-- Zeppelin, GnR, a Greta Van Fleet song, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard etc. The people there seemed to sing along with every song, knew all the words. And it was packed.

I got to thinking about that, and most of that stuff the band played came out 30+ years ago. That's the same as when I was their age, listening to someone play Elvis, Chubby Checker and the Drifters..and knowing all the words. I STILL don't know any of that stuff.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Also, SC's problem isn't as much skyrocketing rent prices or any of the other

stufff you said (although that adds to it)--It's the cost of insurance that's the big single problem.

That affects anywhere that sells alcohol, whether its a restaurant or bar that has live music.

absolutely correct that the liability insurance has gotten out of hand here, and that's what the SC Venue Crisi group is working to resolve.

https://scvenuecrisis.org/

It's a little easier for a restaurant that serves a lot of food and has longer hours to meet that insurance premium, but for a pure music venue...not so much. Of course, the bulk of those that host live music usually stick with local artists and don't have to pay very much for entertainment. An independent venue that hosts regional or national acts, opens the doors at 7pm, and doesn't really serve much in the way of food just can't survive in this state. I see this as a big reason you'll start seeing less independent restaurants that might have had some form of live music and more Applebee's, O'Charley's, Longhorn Steakhouses, etc. taking their place because the corporate joints can more afford the insurance. That replacement will be slower in tourist areas, but it will KILL independents in parts of the state that don't have that tourist draw.

Sorry for the P&R rant. It's the state legislature that set the dumb rules, then refused to pass alterations in this session to make it better. Vote those bastadges out.

Lawyers making laws is a fundamental conflict of interest.

It’s special how a bunch of DUI attorneys passed this bill re: alcohol liability on businesses serving alcohol and then weaken the laws on DUI re: blood alcohol levels under 0.05, 3 hours after an accident.

Win/win for the attorneys.
