I just met some hs kids that preferred SCar to Clemson.

Jul 27, 2012, 3:04 PM

They have been on a tour of many schools (Clemson, SCar, NCSU, VT, and now PSU). Both want to major in engineering. One in Nuclear, the other is interested in Electrical, and maybe Acoustics down the road.

Apparently, they had such a bad experience with the Visitor's Center that it left an awful taste in their mouths...to the point where they both prefer SCar. In fact, SCar is in the lead for one of them (of course, she wants to major in Nuclear which we don't have...but she can go the Mechanical route if she wanted to).

This was the granddaughter of my boss's boss's boss ...so I gave them my email and told them to ask me anything about admissions/financial aid that they didn't get answered during the tour. I'm hoping to do some damage control. What the heck is going on with the Visitor's Center?

Its probably run by liberal arts majors******

instead of the world renowned PRTM programs.

I'm pretty sure that's not the case..They are rising seniors

but solid like pretty solid students. Pretty sure at least one would make the honors program. I'll know later because I ask her to send me their test scores, gpa, etc.

For clarification, they are rising seniors

Jul 27, 2012, 3:23 PM

I'm just saying they visited both campuses on Monday and both sat at lunch with me today and said they liked South Carolina better. I feel like someone had to have done something very wrong for that to happen.

Maybe admissions didn't like getting so many apps so

I'm thinking it has to do with city vs. middle of nowhere

Jul 27, 2012, 3:35 PM [ in reply to For clarification, they are rising seniors ]

and without the students there, I'm sure Clemson seemed even more boring.

I remember when I went to look at schools, I had better or worse experiences at some places based on the weather, or based on construction on the campus. When you're 17/18 and visiting some place, you fixate on the dumbest stuff. Hopefully they can go back when class is in session, or go down and see a football game, and that'll bring them around.

They are considering Penn St (since grandpa works here)

Jul 27, 2012, 4:20 PM [ in reply to I'm thinking it has to do with city vs. middle of nowhere ]

so being in the middle of nowhere aspect shouldn't come into play. This place is for sure in the BFE.

I took a family friends son through there about 2 years ago

We did the tour, walked the campus etc.

He'll be a sophomore at CU this year.

First I've ever heard of...

Jul 27, 2012, 3:35 PM [ in reply to I had two roommates graduate it.*** ]

Being an EE from NC I searched all over for the best engineering school within 5 hours. Was looking very closely at Clemson, VT, NC State, GT but Clemson's scholarships won me over.

My point is that throughout that search I never heard or read anything notable about USC, which should tell you something about USC's program... On top of that they don't place above Clemson on any undergrad engineering rankings, if they place at all ;)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I didn't think Clemson was that awesome my first time

Jul 27, 2012, 3:32 PM

It took going to a football game before I really loved the place. Think they got a bad tour guide, or what? I would also expect that SCar being in a city might make some people like it more, although if they're the kind of people that care about academics Clemson should be the obvious choice.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've worked in the engineering field for 30 years & 1 month

Jul 27, 2012, 4:13 PM

in four different states. I've had one structural engineer from UCS work for me briefly, and that's it. I haven't even met any other engineering majors from UCS I can recall. Now, I had other UCS grads work for me with other majors, but they were mostly techs and admin personnel.

That's it.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is what I was trying to emphasize, but I didn't want to

Jul 27, 2012, 4:22 PM

sound like a homer. And since they were looking at one program that we don't offer, I don't know that I could argue with that...other than to push them to VT or somewhere other than UCS with a nuclear program.

"It's Baltimore, Gentlemen; the Gods will not save you."

NCST has developed a strong Nuke Program....

Jul 27, 2012, 4:27 PM

Normally, I wouldn't speak up for those guys, but they have made huge advances in recent years.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have a cousin who's a CE that graduated from there.

Jul 27, 2012, 4:23 PM [ in reply to I've worked in the engineering field for 30 years & 1 month ]

Amazingly he's down well, despite all the strikes against him. Has his own consulting firm in Kennesaw, Georgia.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

oh yeah, neither of the like NCSU. I thought this was funny:

Jul 27, 2012, 4:24 PM

The boy said at NCState there was a beach volleyball court in between two of the dorms and every yer they had a battle between teams from each dorm. The winner claimed the court for the year.

This, he claimed, was the BEST THING ABOUT NCSU.

Now this could either call these kids' logic into question, or solidify what I've known all along about NCSU...it kinda sucks :).

"It's Baltimore, Gentlemen; the Gods will not save you."

I one of them wants Nuke-e and likes SCAR...

Jul 27, 2012, 4:30 PM

Maybe he/she would be happiest at Maryland. "Best" of both worlds and couch fires when they win things!

When we drink, we get drunk.
When we get drunk, we fall asleep.
When we fall asleep, we commit no sin.
When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.
So, let's all get drunk, and go to heaven!
