Expectations

Sep 5, 2023, 10:24 AM

I heard several times during the pregame that expectations at Clemson are high. And that is true. Once you get a taste of winning and the bar continually rises, expectations naturally go with it. However, my expectations for last night weren't actually THAT high. Last year the the OC and QB were berated for a mediocre (at best) performance. Changes needed to be made. And they were. My expectations for last night were simply to see something different from last year. I was disappointed. By the half I was thinking that I have seen this movie and I know how it ends.

Reading a lot of threads here today where expectations may be a little higher than mine. But, not being the football or X's and O's guy, I'm not really sure where to start pointing fingers or where that would end. It would seem we picked up where we left off in January. What's the answer? Portal? Sweet NIL deals? New coaches? New head coach?

Some say Dabo's refusal to use the portal would make a difference. Maybe. We have seen one head coach flip the entire roster with 86 transfers. It seems to have worked. At least, for one game. The same head coach says he doesn't care anything about culture. "I don't care if these guys like each other. I just want to win". Win or lose, I'm not sure I'd like the same philosophy at Clemson. So don't confuse ego with a man sticking to his convictions. How many times have we heard Dabo say, "We're gonna win the right way"?

On another level we have a back-to-back National Champion. A win at any cost program that has spent more time at police HQ or in front of judge than they have hoisting a NC trophy. Is that Dabo's ego getting in the way as well?

You're thinking there must be some balance between these two examples. If it means compromising your principles, I dont think there is.

Can you explain what is the right way to win? The transfer portal is legal so there is nothing wrong with filling it with a good player in a position of need. When Dabo says we are gonna win the right way, It kind of feels like he is saying we are gonna win my way.

I didn't really mean to equate the two. Or imply that we would need to do anything "illegal" to succeed. I'm sure we're all familiar with Dabo's list when it comes to recruiting. Any marks on that list and we lose interest. Regardless of their talent level. And to a degree, that is "his way'.
So be it. We're all-in when "his way" is winning national championships. My point was more along the lines that there is a ton of talent out there. Which one are we willing to "sell our souls" for in order to get another NC? My response to that would be none of them.

as a follow-up,

Do you hire an OC to get what they can bring to the table or do you immediately train that OC to do things my way? In that regard, I will ask, Why make the change? If the case at Clemson we're gonna do things my way, results be ######, then we are in trouble. I don't see us making adjustments at half let alone during the off-season.
