ESPN: Coaching scenario
Nov 24, 2013, 7:55 AM
|
|
The scenario: Kevin Sumlin takes the USC job, is replaced at Texas A&M by Chad Morris This is really a three-for-one scenario, as the USC coaching situation and whether Kevin Sumlin and Chad Morris move on to other jobs are three of the biggest upcoming storylines to watch. As I reported last week, a source told me that USC is prepared to offer as much as $6 million a year to secure its next coach. If that price is right for Sumlin, he would make a lot of sense for USC as it tries to make up ground in its own city, let alone the Pac-12. In my book, anyone who uses the term "SwagCopter" is a perfect fit for Hollywood.
If he does go, Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris -- a Texas high school football coach from 1994 to 2009 -- could be the right guy to try to sustain what Sumlin has already done at A&M. He figures to be a hot head-coaching commodity, whether the Aggies job comes open or not.
The recruiting impact: When you're recruiting at USC, you have to have a little bit of Ari Gold and Vinny Chase from "Entourage" in you. You have to be cutthroat and aggressive, but you must also have charisma and build relationships. From a recruiting standpoint, Kevin Sumlin would be USC's ideal candidate. He's used to the dog-eat-dog world of recruiting in Texas and the SEC, so competing against the Pac-12 should be no problem. Sumlin's departure would open up the A&M job, and Morris' history in Texas and meteoric rise as a top college assistant would make him an instant hit on the recruiting trail at Texas A&M. He understands the culture of College Station and what it means to be an Aggie, and that will sell well. The quarterback domino effect this could create would be interesting. Would No. 3 pocket passer and A&M commit Kyle Allen follow Sumlin to USC? And would No. 1 overall QB prospect and Clemson pledge Deshaun Watson follow Morris to College Station?

Watson has not signed anything that binds him to CU. He can still go anywhere he wants at this time. The financial aid thing Watson signed just allows coaches to talk to him more and some players have signed more than one financial aid agreements. I feel that Watson will sign with CU, even if Morris leaves but he can still change his mind and go else where before he enrolls at CU.

Key point... "enrolls". That would be in January and would

supersede a LOI.

What is missing here is that, Watson has already said that he will be a Clemson Tiger even if Morris moved on.

That signing is only binding on the school, and gives the school additional contact advantages. The recruit can still change his mind.

Wishful thinking by ESPN...

they just can't stand that we are starting to get a number of top recruits from Georgia. Also, Jack Del Rio would be the more likely hire if they don't keep Ed Orgeron.

I really don't think Sumlin is that great of a coach

He's basically had Manziel carry an average team this year. The defense hasn't shown improvement, either.
They look like a bunch of decent to very good athletes, but not like a 'well-coached' football team.

I doubt that A&M would hire Chad. I think he would be a great hire but doubt that they go with no HC experience. I still think he has to go to a lower profie program first. Either way its just a matter of time. I would prefer he go to Texas than somehwere in our backyard
