"eLearning" is a joke, but this rain is not!

Very stupid that all the schools up here canceled for the day in favor of "eLearning." My son is a senior in HS and logged in to his first class - nothing. Absolutely nothing. He could've slept in.
But this rain - we're at over 3" in Taylors already, and it's supposed to keep raining until about 2pm or so. Gonna be a wet day! The creek in the back is way over it's banks already. I know the wind isn't forecast to come until midday, but I just don't see the need to cancel schools. Yeah, the schools don't call it a cancellation - it's "eLearning," but like I said, that's really a big joke. Nobody will be doing anything.
Heck, in my day - "tornado warning! Everybody get in the hall and curl up!" That was our adverse weather planning. Five minutes later, back to work!

And I'm not really one of those "back in my day" old geezers (I'm 54 - but it's fun to play that role!), but there's some validity to it. Busses ran back then when it was windy and rainy. They just ran slower. Maybe the kids got to school a little later than usual.
What are the kids doing today that are out of school? Driving to the mall. Driving to SkyZone. Driving to the movies. 99.8% of the roads are totally fine. The roads that have a tendency to flood - they're known, so they can be worked around. I know - I live near some.
And the wind - which was more of a reason to cancel than the rain? Same thing. First off, it's winter, so the trees won't catch as much of the wind with no leaves on them. We've had some good storms in the spring and fall so a lot of weak branches are already down. The big issue is ground saturation and how that might affect trees. But still - schools will be unaffected. Roads will be largely unaffected.
It's really pretty silly. And I guarantee you - there's VERY little "eLearning" going on today, unless you're talking about Instgram, TikTok, and Netflix.

And I agree. Absolutely absurd. As for the rain. im sick of it. And there is a parade of more rain storms headed this way over the next ten days. Cant we make at least one of them a snowstorm? At least then the school cancellation might make sense.

But when there's a hurricane they want people to evacuate to the schools.

i tried to convince my son and daughter to go back yesterday but they refused.
I get to work at 7 am so i rarely ever hit any traffic.. The people who have funneled in since have all complained about the traffic. fire trucks have blown by my office twice already.

To climb to the top of the flagpole and stay there in one hour shifts to act as a human lightning rod and protect the rest of the students. I think it was a really effective message sent by the principal, and these wussy kids today and their coddling parents would do good to bring it back.

We started homeschooling ours this year. I'm please to announce that the coltdizzle academy of mediocre learning is running full schedule today.
Also I'm realizing that my kids will only be as smart as I am.
I really think the oldest has a future right up front taking food orders instead of back of house staff.

I can concur with everyone that "e-learning" does not work having worked in our state schools for 40 years. As to why schools were closed today we are missing the point. While student and staff safety is a priority the main reason to close schools today is all about insurance and potential lawsuits if, heaven prevent, a loss of loss of a child trying to get to school in this mess. The best decision was made for all. Just wish all this was snow. Dang global warming.

The best decision was not made for all. How many kids do you think are at home alone today because a parent had to go to work? This is just one example. So it’s ok if the school avoids the small possibility of a lawsuit but if something happens to a kid because a parent has to go to work to put food on the table it’s ok? The whole culture now that wants to avoid all risk at all costs is ridiculous.
Not to mention that the education deterioration when kids are at home. Going thru my kids work sent home yesterday, it was a collection of busy work sheets to do, no zoom call instruction or live lessons from the teacher planned. A lost day of learning, but at least teachers got a break (at least my kid’s did).

10 years ago, it would be an “inclement weather day” but it was usually tacked on at the end of the year after the students had state testing, so it wasn’t actually helpful.

Luckily my wife is a teacher so she is at home with my 8 and 11 yr old doing e-learning. But also, unfortunately for my wife she’s a teacher so she’s helping them with e-learning. It’s a total joke. It’s a constant back and forth with both of them cause something isn’t loading or pulling up on the computer, they don’t understand the assignment etc etc. She’s getting her steps in going up and down the stairs today.
