Question for alumni

What was (in your opinion) Clemson's greatest athletic achievement and biggest athletic disappointment during your time as a student?
I guess for me, the greatest achievement was the 1987 soccer national championship
The greatest letdown was the Tate George buzzer beater in the 1990 Sweet 16 (close second Danny Ford's resignation)

followed by watching all the interceptions vs UGa the next year while being pelted by ice and stuff in Athens
Was also there for 84 soccer Natty - a great time in Tiger Town.

making the college world series in 2000 and beating #1 ranked UNC in basketball in 2001. The Rod Gardner catch against the coots was not far behind.
Biggest disappointment was...well most everything our football team did during that time outside of the coot games was a huge disappointment. But at least getting student tickets to football and basketball was really easy.

I was there 97-01. We celebrated some minor moments that felt major then. 98 butt-whipping by FSU I’m Talatrashy was painful. We went... beating the coots with the “catch” was epic. I had classes with Rod and he was dating my girlfriends roommate so we got to talk about it after the game.

The 81 NC was pretty cool, the worst was the intramural flag football championship, the team that beat us had more than 7 scholarship baseball players on it, against the rules. They barely beat us, so pretty embarrassing for CU baseball.

They'll be forced to choose between the 2016 and 2018 football NC's.
I'm thinking I'll go with the Not-officially-recognized-but-undefeated 1983 ACC Football championship, which was capped with a record-setting balloon launch vs Maryland.

Losing to Duke (I was there) the week after beating top 10 Miami in the OB was the low point.

Best by far was beating Duke 74-47(2009?) at home and also beating Duke in the 2007 ACC Tourney in Charlotte.
Biggest let down is a toss up between losing to Miami(05) and BC (07) -That triple overtime against Miami was awesome until we lost. -That BC game sucked because I was in TigerBand and Matt Ryan threw that winning touchdown pass into our corner of the endzone.

There sure weren't many football highlights from '72-'75. We never were ranked and didn't beat a single ranked team. Did get a Pepsi bottle for an undefeated home season in '74 though.
The high points had to be the basketball seasons in '74/75 and '75/76. We beat a number of top 10 teams those years. The lowlight had to be losing to UNCheat in OT in the ACC tournament semifinals in '75.

I knew two guys that were there for seven. Nobody for eight, though. Probably couldn't do that now.

or sweet sixteen in 97. Or Emory Smith dragging South Carolina defenders all over the field in 95. But our football team just wasn't that good during my (the Tommy West) years there.

Except that I graduated in the spring of '90 (I did my freshman coursework at Greenville Tec in college transfer). A couple of other notable things that happened during that time:
- The girl who fell off the ledge of the ATO house on the quad and died. That was a weird night (just so happened to be my birthday).
- The night that Danny resigned/got fired. Rumors flying around downtown about carrying torches and pitchforks to Marx Lenin's home in protest.

I was at the soccer game in '87

It was really cold and I was sick as a dog... but that was a great experience. It really was like a little slice of Death Valley at Riggs Field that day.
I think the biggest achievement while I was there was winning the regular season ACC basketball championship. What a great season that was. Now THAT was a basketball team. I'd put that team up against ANY of the current ACC teams.
The most fun game I went to was beating the dawgs in '87. Standing on the hill, Treadwell kicking the game winner into the WEZ bleachers. Biggest disappointment - the NC State game that same year. Greatest comeback to result in a loss that I can remember.
The puntrooskie game gets an honorable mention. I hate Deion Sanders.

Fall of 2010 - Spring 2015
High - Getting to see the transformation of our football program from underachiever to powerhouse. There were so many events that had to happen it would be unfair to label a single event in time.
Low - Seeing our basketball program returning to mediocrity.

My Sr year: #12 Clemson beat #11 Maryland was huge back then
Mar 9, 2020, 7:42 PM
|
|
In 1978, I followed the Clemson team up to Maryland and the #12 Tigers beat the #11 Twerps in the most exciting football game that I had ever seen to that point in my life. We were thrilled to accept a Gator Bowl invitation that evening.
One of the lowest points in my student days happened just three weeks later when Charley Pell announced that he was leaving Clemson for Florida. He offered to coach the Gator Bowl, but Clemson said "To #### with Pell" and named a young Danny Ford head coach.
Coach Ford quickly righted the ship as the Tigers won another memorable game by beating Woody Hayes in the Gator Bowl. Woody freaked out and punched Clemson player Charlie Bauman. Thus beginning our long time ownership of THAT Ohio State University.

I suspect we jumped the gun by taking a Gator Bowl bid before the game... Being that we hadn't been to a bowl in so long... Nebraska and Oklahoma had played during the regular season and wound up playing a repeat game in the Orange Bowl... I would bet a hefty sum that if we had waited until after the game, we would have played either Nebraska or Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl...

Undefeated soccer team in 1973 that lost in the National Championship semi's to UCLA was the greatest while I was there. 3 - 8 football record in my freshman year 1970 was worst.

nosmelC pretty much nailed it for me, class of '79 here....

High point was beating Ohio St in 1978 and finishing 11-1 and ranked #6. That was unheard of... you have to remember, before the 1977 team went 8-3 and got a Gator bid, we hadn't even been to a bowl in 20 years. I'd suffered through seasons of 2-9 and the like. And to now be "rubbing elbows" with the legendary programs... the final Top 10 was Alabama, Sou Cal, Oklahoma, Penn St, Michigan, Clemson, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Texas, Houston. Unbelievable...surreal even.
But I must say, 1977 was an incredible year, too. I've posted before - probably the best all around year in Clemson sports history. Football went to the Gator Bowl, Basketball went 22-5 in the real ACC when everybody played each other twice, Baseball went to the College World Series, Soccer was ranked #1 most of the year and lost a heartbreaker in the Final Four. And we were nationally ranked in Tennis, Swimming, etc. Pick almost any sport, and we kicked asz.

The most fun I had was watching us destroy West Va. in the Gator Bowl and the lowest I felt was watching on TV Hatfield blundering in not kicking field goals three times we were inside the ten yard line and then asking Gordocki(sp) to tie with a 60 yard field goal against Georgia Tech.

Chris Michael hit a jumper to beat tarholes, we released a ton of balloons one Saturday morning, killed Boomer and TwerpU in the valley, got screwed by the ACC on probation, had Coneheads sitting under the basket at hoops games, was present when we beat Georgia between the hedges on a field goal, and got to see both Grants on the hoops team at the same time. Tons more too. Great years to say the least!
