CLEMSON — The documentary “The Education of Harvey Gantt,” chronicling the journey of the South Carolinian to become Clemson University’s first African-American student, will be broadcast nationwide in February, Black History Month.
South Carolina ETV, an affiliate of the national Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), will broadcast its documentary beginning Feb. 4, on stations in more than 72 percent of U.S. television markets. American Public Television is distributing the documentary nationally to markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia, among the top 10 in the country.
The production documents Gantt’s successful efforts to desegregate Clemson University, with the assistance of the NAACP and attorney Matthew J. Perry. Gantt enrolled at Clemson as the first African-American student in January, 1963. The university marked the 50th anniversary of the event, characterized as “integration with dignity,” last year. The Charleston native studied architecture and graduated from Clemson with honors in 1965.
Award-winning South Carolina ETV producer Betsy Newman directed the documentary.
“I’m very excited and happy this program will be seen all over the country because it’s such an important part of the civil rights story and it hasn’t been told before, ” Newman said.
Gantt moved to Charlotte, N.C., after he graduated from Clemson. It was in the Queen City that he founded Gantt-Huberman Architects, sat on the Charlotte City Council and became the city’s first African-American mayor.
Tony Award-winning actress and singer Phylicia Rashad narrated the documentary, which features historic photographs by Cecil Williams.

I was a student when Mr Gant enrolled at Clemson and I proudly say I was never more proud of my university and its students than I was that day. For weeks prior to his arrival the campus was filled with the national media looking for a story to equal the ones in Alabama and Arkansas and Mississippi. Federal agents were everywhere anticipating riots. You had to show your ID every time you walked down town. When the day came for his arrival, it was a day like all others in Clemson. No one seemed to care that an Afro American would soon be one of us. The media left without a story and Clemson went forward to greatness. GO TIGERS

In July 1963, U.S. District Judge J. Robert Martin ruled that USC must admit Monteith. By that point, USC officials had already determined to proceed with dignity, hoping to emulate the success of Clemson University. Clemson had admitted its first black student, Harvey Gantt, six months earlier without incident. Lucinda Brawley, Clemson’s first female black student, was also enrolling in the fall of 1963, just days before USC.

they wait for the local police to act or NCAA to drop the hammer before they do anything and then they say... we had already decided to suspend such and such, or we had already decided to self impose x punishment

You might want to look into Gantt v. Clemson Agricultural College before throwing stones. The Warren Court got him admitted.

This isn't a question about his admittance to Clemson, it is about his immediate acceptance as a Clemson man..... DA!
