DJ looked a lot better last night

Sep 6, 2022, 9:54 AM

That's right, I said what I said. Some are just so anti-DJ they don't see it. But last season He made NONE of those throws. Were they all perfect? Not at all, but they got where they needed and WERE catchable balls. Did Cade look fantastic? Sure, and I want a lot more of him. But Y'all know that on the road, with his defense to lean on Dabo is going with the guy he knows and trusts, Think KB in Aggieville. Cade will get better as well and we very well may see a change, but let's not sell DJ too short with the work he's put in. I only saw one real bad throw, that was a groundball in the 3rd. Biggest issue was the line holding up better and drops. Beaux is a stud and but needs to focus more and make contested catches. He is a big kid and should be able to maul a 5'10" corner. EJ needs to find his MOJO from his freshman year because last two seasons he's been MIA, injuries or not. And Ngata? IDK, time will tell. If these more senior guys don't step up quick, Williams and Randall (from all reports) WILL, they are hungry! Y'all don't get me wrong, DJ has a LONG way to improve, but if you don't think he looked a LOT better last night then I can't explain it to you.

I dont think anyone would argue that he hasn't improved

Sep 6, 2022, 9:56 AM

The problem is, even with the improvements, he's not elite.

No yet.

Under DJ Clemson is not a threat: Good enough for yesterday

Sep 6, 2022, 10:03 AM

I expect Dabo to make a change soon. He will get tired of making excuses and Klubnik will be in soon.
DJ is still not smooth - lot of mumbling and bumbling ... hesitant and fixating on relievers. He still cannot run. That's not his natural game. Also Clemson offense is not geared for a pocket passer..

DJ threw a higher percentage of really accurate balls last night than he did except in a game or two last year.

Our big WRs have improved as far as not dropping (many) of the passes when they were wide open and the ball hit them in the hands.

But our big WRs cannot catch a contested pass. Darn near impossible for a QB to only throw a deep ball if he knows that his big WRs will be wide open. Lots of time the QB has to throw it before the WR either beats his man cleanly or must make the high-point / contested catch.

DJ played a MUCH better game than his stats indicated.

DJ trhew the ball better because he no longer has a hurt finger, like he did last year. He lost 30lbs but is still very slow. He locks in on his receiver the moment he receives the snap. He will never be an elite QB. He is an average QB at best. Not hating on DJ. Just stating the facts. Time to move on and make this Cades team. Sure hope Dabo doesn't waste the championship caliber defense by staying loyal to DJ. Clemson has a good enough defense and special teams to compete for a Natty this year. We just need a little help from the offense. An elite defense will shut down this offense with DJ running the show.

It is not the bad throws, it is the throws he does not make. 4WR sets, 1-2 guys open, and he holds the ball and takes a sack or throws it away. Or he sees coverage he does not like and audibles to what the whole planet knows is a QB run. DJ is much improved, but still average at best.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was slightly better, but...

Sep 6, 2022, 10:16 AM

DJ may have looked slightly better than last year, but it was still nowhere close to being what the team needs to succeed at the highest level. ESPN's QBR (which factors in OL play, the QB running the ball, WR drops, etc.) gave him a 39.4 last night, which is currently good for 93rd in the country. There were virtually no downfield completions, he didn't seem that confident in making tight-window throws, and, while he looked a bit more agile than last year, he is still just a bit too clumsy to be a consistent running threat. I also think his first step is too slow to escape the pocket and/or run well against athletic fronts, and I didn't see much improvement in his ability to throw on the run.

I'd give him a few more games, but that's honestly only because I'd like to see the OL improve before throwing Klubnik out there. I don't mean to be negative, but I honestly just don't think DJ has the skillset needed to run this offense at an elite level.

Everyone saw more of the same. DJ is a statue in the pocket and holds the ball far to long. He fails to progress beyond his selected target and tends to panic when it isn’t there. He’s so gun shy he’s afraid to throw a 50/50 ball. A mobile Qb like Cade hides o line issues. He looked better with scrub receivers because he made quick decisions and was on target with a catchable ball. DJ throws harder than he needs to and it’s isn’t a tight spiral. This reminds me of Watson on the bench as a a freshman. It reminds me of Lawrence sitting behind Bryant. This is a problem. Dabo has to be the CEO and make the hard call. I love DJ as a person. Not as a Qb. I’m glad we have some realists who aren’t afraid to call it like it is. Blind cheerleaders drive me nuts.

I agree. DJ was much more accurate and kept the ball where only we could catch it. Last year, there were so many overthrown balls. I may have missed it, but do not recall seeing a single overthrown ball from him last night. Accuracy is much improved. The disappointing part is the lack of any animation in the backfield. Stood like a statue quite a few times. We have to be able to play with the O-line we have. They will get better, but until they do, being a statue won’t work.

DJ looked better last night indeed. He leaves mixed bags of some decisions early in the game that need improvement. The DJ that showed up in the second half was calm, focused, and making better decisions and plays with the ball. That is an improvement from the DJ in the first half who held the ball too long to make plays, made bad decisions, and did not show up to play yet.

DJ's next test will be against Wake Forest. Furman and Louisiana Tech should be lopsided wins.

I thought DJ got a lot more comfortable and confident as the game went on. Hopefully that carries forward. As it stands it looks like we have two legit QB's that we can win with, which is a great position to be in.

Go Tigers!

Not really. It was more of the same.

Sep 6, 2022, 10:51 AM

He can't move his feet. He's big, but he's not an athlete. His accuracy is inconsistent. His decision making is slow and inconsistent. Teams don't respect his running ability or his passing ability. We are better around him, but the results are similar.

When Cade came in with the third stringers, the offense was so much smoother and efficient. Imagine what will happen when he gets significant minutes with the first team.

DJ definitely looked noticeably better (minus his very bad

start) last night.

He made some good runs (I think he ran more because we have a real backup); he dropped a couple of dimes that previous members of WRU definitely would have caught; and he completed the easy passes - which he didn't always do last year.

That said - it appears there's likely a better QB sitting on the bench though.
