Disappointed in some of our fans

This post is likely to come across as preachy but I'm not intending for it to be or to try and tell anyone else how to act. However, I've always taken great pride in the Clemson fanbase being above the rest and being a family. However, I've been disappointed in a lot of the comments about DJU this year including last night.
I'm as disappointed as anyone with how things went with him this year and our offense overall. I'm not saying there should never be any criticism of players. I have no problem with anyone pointing out things that need improvement including the QB position. I don't have a problem with anyone saying DJ needs to improve a ton next year or there will need to be a change. I'd imagine that DJ would be the first to tell you that. What is disappointing though are the comments saying he sucks and other similar comments.
I especially thought last night was unfair to him. He didn't play great, but he made some good throws, some good runs, and would've made a few more plays if not for a few drops. I saw a few comments last night saying Purdy looked good and we'd be a championship team without him while being critical of every little mistake DJ made. That's especially interesting to me considering DJ had a higher completion percentage and made fewer mistakes than Purdy last night. Before anyone comments saying DJ only threw short passes I'd like to point out that DJ averaged more yards per completion than Purdy.
The same people who were passing out compliments to Purdy were all over every mistake DJ made while ignoring mistakes by Purdy. Just off the top of my head Purdy missed a wide open receiver in the end zone on their 1st scoring drive, threw a pick 6 that was only a pick 6 because after our 1st defended tipped the pass he decided to tip it again himself which went right into the hands of Goodrich...and then Purdy fumbled on their last offensive play which sealed the game for us.
I'm not saying the mistakes of another QB make up for any made by DJ, it just seems unfair to me for our own fans to be so critical of our own QB while passing out compliments to a guy who did worse.
This part will come across as simply taking up for DJ, and I suppose it is in a way, but I'm not trying to act like he played great this year or wasn't deserving of criticism. However, in the 2nd half of the year it's unfair to overlook his finger injury. I mainly say that to the people who keep saying they never saw any improvement from him during the season. It certainly makes it harder to improve whenever you have a hurt finger on your throwing hand.
I also don't think people take into account how much impact the injuries at receiver had on him. It seems nobody even mentioned that last night. The fact that his 2nd completing of the game was to Will Swinney says all that needs to be said. No way that had no impact on play calling, ability for receivers to get open, or the chemistry between DJ and his receivers. He really never had a chance to build a trust with his receiving group this year. Again, that doesn't totally excuse his own play, but I don't think our offense would've been scoring 40+ per game with a different QB with the same receiving group we had after the injuries.
Again, this post isn't meant to act like DJ is the most awesome QB in the world or should be our starter next season without question. In fact, one of 2 things will happen next season. Either DJ improves a ton and goes back to looking like he did against ND last year or we'll end up with a new starter at QB. To me though, those things will take care of themselves and making constant posts about how much he sucks is going to do nothing but make our fanbase look terrible. I know someone will say all fanbases have fans who say things like that, but aren't we as Clemson fans supposed to be better than that?

Thanks for the post . I agree 100%. I don’t feel these are the old guard of the Clemson fan base but the new ones that have jumped on board with our recent success. I would not pay any attention to them because as soon as we lose a few games they are going to be gone to the big thing.

It is the old guard. Same comments were here and even worse when CTB was coach. On Tigernet, the back up Quarterback was ALWAYS the most popular man on the team.

you'll get criticized by those that can't get this far into thought about how things progressed. For most of the critical crew here, it's all black and white. No matter how many times you heard the number of scholarship players out, the apparent gap of talent between DJ and the backup QBs, the bad OL play, etc., it was a bad OC, bad Dabo for not pushing the portal button to order up a new QB. Most folks don't realize that Dabo's goals are not exactly in line with the fan's goals. Dabo is developing a culture and working to make young men into strong leaders, through the football program. Yea, he wants to win, but he won't compromise his values to do it. Many people will.

Being a big time quarterback on a big time team comes with some responsibility. DJ is aware of that I’m sure. Dabo likely reminds him of that often. There are things within the framework of this team that fans like most of us aren’t aware of. DJ has two options as I see it. Get better or get replaced. Let’s allow Dabo to make that call.Go Tigers.

a lot of these "negative Nancy's" aren't Clemson fans. They've never been one nor will they ever be one. Most are bandwagon fans that have been watching Clemson games in their parent's basement. Wish there was a way to find out if they've actually attended a game.
I've had my seats in Death Valley since 1989 and I'm seeing so many new "neighbors" near me. I've had conversations and find that a lot of them are parents of new students. They're usually "not from around here" and not familiar with how things are done "around here", much less on how Clemson fans are suppose to act.
Not only on how to carry themselves in the "Clemson way", but most can't even do the 1,2,3,4 Clemson cheer correct (this isn't my measuring stick). Good thing is, they don't WOO-HOO!
Bottom line, no need for the "YOU SUCK" attitude from anybody towards anybody. It's a game for God's sake. Read the recent article concerning Goodrich being in Dabo's "love shack" and now look at that young man now. Hopefully DJ gets healthy and has an amazing year (2022) as well.

Been there since I graduated in 83 so bona fides established It quit being a game a long time ago Its a multi million dollar business and I remember the Danny Ford days of 3 up the middle runs followed by a punt Sound familiar? This descent started when Dabo and co started blowing sunshine and the very real problems that were pointed out that were belittled and ignored going back to O State and LSU whippings Fast forward to a hang on win in a 2nd tier bowl with a half empty stadium Its time for Dabo to man up and earn the millions of dollars WE have paid him I hope he will and right the ship next year but you cant fix it if you dont admit its broken starting with our disaster of quarterback and just like Carolina a year ago an obvious problem with our conditioning I have always liked Dabo but he needs to get hungry again and quit telling us that settling because of what we obtained in the past We know he can do it because he has

i must say DJ gave us all he had. Why that was not great, or why that was not like last year, I wish I knew. Probably multiple reasons.
But he played hard, kept a great attitude, and was the best option we had even when he was less than perfect.
Had DJ quit on his team as quickly as many quit on DJ, we would have had a 7-5 season....at best.
I tip my cap to him. Hope he improves. He will need to...as competition is coming.
Nothing would make me happier than to see DJ win the job next year. If he does, we'll have us a special QB.

I wish I could give it two TU’s. DJU following both Trevor and Deshaun is probably somewhat like the next coaches following Dabo or Saban will experience. Many younger fans probably only remember the days of Deshaun and Trevor. They have no perspective on how lucky we were to have two QB standouts like that back to back.
I will be surprised if DJ doesn’t come back much improved next year. Like you I’m not sure he will be the starter, but let’s just wait and see.

Well said. It’s really no wonder why DJ plays so uptight. He can go 22/23 and people would harp on the one pass he missed. I thought DJ did well. I personally hope he gets in shape, loses a few lbs, and works with a private QB coach in the off season. If he can get healthy and do all those things, DJ can win a championship at CU. I strongly believe that.

Oh please! We have a right to expect excellence or at least excellent effort… this was a disaster from day one and never improved… all the excuses in the world do not change the facts and reality… I am frankly worn out with the coddling of this QB… there are plenty of talented kids who would have given anything for his opportunity!

Agree with you. DJ did his best, and played hurt for a significant portion on the season. Hopefully he comes back next year better than ever. It can only help the team.

Fan is short for fanatic. Anybody - Trevor Lawrence, Tom Brady - doesn't matter who - gets roasted when they underperform. DJ didn't look as good this year as expected or as good as he did last year, but we went 10 and 3. They toughed it out and played like grown ### men. I'm proud of them and I'm looking forward to next year. Go Tigers!

while considering it off-limits to even question coaches who make millions of dollars a year. After all, the coaches are the one who recruited him and have coached him these last two seasons. They are ultimately responsible for his performance.
DJ has done his best and represented our program with class. While I agree that his performance this year has been disappointing, continually bashing him is uncalled for.

It was a recurring issue for him.
It had nothing to do with his skill as a player. In fact, I noted that he does a lot of good for us.
That is a far cry from the horrible stuff said about DJ this year.
Surely you are smart enough to see the difference.

Focus up. If the coaching matters and protects DJ from criticism it applies equally to Skalski whose actions you criticized occurred entirely in the field of play.
