True story:

About 10-15 years ago the low country was in a bad drought. The Santee Cooper lakes were dern near dry. There's a small landing off the peninsula of pineopolis that was bone dry dirt for 1000s of yards into the lake. I must have collected hundreds of dollars worth of rapalas and rattle traps off the exposed stumps. In fact I haven't bought a freshwater lure since, but many have been returned over the years.

LOL, way back in another life, I used to fish the Tail Race Canal on occasion.

Now, depending on what they are doing with the gates at the ### upstream, the current runs pretty doggone strong at times. On at least three different occasions, I hooked into something that was moving downstream at a good clip. I just knew I had me a good sized catfish, which is what I was fishing for.

What I REALLY had, upon reeling it in, was an old leather BOOT. THREE OF THEM IN ALL. And, even weirder, they were all left feet! There must have been a pegleg pirate that lived around there, who kept tossing his left side boots in the water, since he had no use for them.

Those things fought hard, tumbling along on the bottom in the current with my hook in them. A whole lot more realistic than those stumps, I bet!

:(

I know that sounds like a Grits Gresham embroidery, but it was all true. Even

worse, the only REAL fish I caught that day was a big old ugly Alligator Gar. I had to kick HIM in the head with MY steel toed boot to stun him long enough to get my hook back. (for all you PETA types, he came to and swam away, no permanent harm done!)
