Defense Problems>>>>>>

Question for everyone.....My Coot Boss Man said today that the issue was not the defensive coordinators fault it was the offensive coordinators fault. He said that as long as we run the up tempo fast score offense that our defense will NEVER be able to stop any body on a consistant basis....Of course I think he doesn't have a clue, but what does the majority of ya'll think? Can we have a good defense running this type of offense?

they can be solved - at least Venables is admitting mistakes, unlike Steele. If he can get them to play even decent defense, the Tigers will be almost impossible to beat. Go Tigers, Just keep getting better every game!

I think so!!! Most College teams are spreading teams out and running faster tempo offenses. The defense is just young and through these games they will get better. Oklahoma beat the crap out of Florida State twice with Venables defense. We just got to develop the depth of our defense. The man is just starting his tenure and our recruiting will get better talent and we will move out players who are scared to fasten that chin strap and knock someone out. Go Tigers!!!!!!!

Another case of Coot logic
Sep 10, 2012, 9:49 PM
|
|
While it is true that the spread/hurry-up offense will cause the defense to play more minutes, and therefore possibly give up more points than an "old-fashioned" run the ball up the middle kind of offense.
What he fails to add is that a good defense will still hold the other team to fewer points than their offense will score. Even spread teams can, and do, play good defense.
NEVER doubt yourself because of something a Coot says!

We have a fast tempo but not usually quick scoring

like FSU in the 90's. We scored 45 points in the 1st half against ball st but it took us 55 plays. So far this year our time of possession is about equal.

History has proven that up tempo offenses hurt their defenses, at least statistically, by putting them back on the field too often and quickly. Of course stats are for losers...the only stat that matters is the one on the scoreboard at the end of the game.

WRONG!
Sep 10, 2012, 9:56 PM
|
|
If that were the case, then why do we constantly have 8, 9, 10 play 4, 5, 6 minute drives with game time of possession being in our favor, usually by 10%. Our up tempo offense is still a run first ball hogging offense made to wear down them down, not score quickly.
The only difference between Chad Morris' offense and old man football is pace and formation. Concept and execution are the same and that is to dominate the other teams defense enough to score enough points to win the game, not score on every play. Plus, don't listen to #### lovers. They only suck, #####.

Well, there is the "practice factor"...
Sep 10, 2012, 10:06 PM

those guys practice against our offense on a regular basis and should be used to being on the field a lot. Still, there's no doubt depth on defense (and talent in spots) is an issue
Of course, one would think practicing against our WR's would make NFL ready DB's......

Go back and time our first two drives vs Ball State.

Pretty long, sustained, time-consuming.
If we don't have the stupid illegal formation penalty wiping out the Jaron Brown first down catch at mid field, we're on our way to a third long, sustained, time-consumiing TD drive in the first quarter.

If our O-line can keep up with the pace so can the D

It all comes down to conditioning and developing depth.

Except after turnovers on short field, we're really not

scoring all that fast.
Our first two drives this past Saturday were long and sustained.
Where we actually did put the defense on he field unnecessarily was not on a quick score, but when we had the first down pass to Charone Peake nullified by (yet another) silly illegal formation penalty that put us in 3rd and long and resulted in a punt instead of sustaining the drive.
Of course, Ball State broke their long TD run a few plays later and they really shouldn't have even had possession of the ball.

Time of possession
Sep 10, 2012, 10:49 PM
|
|
In both games we have played thus far this season Clemson "won" the time of possession battle. That means that actually the defense was on the field LESS time than the opponents def/Clemson offense. The bigger consideration isn't so much what type of scheme you use but rather how you do with getting 1st downs. If your off frequently has 3-and-out then the def doesn't have time to recoup; if the O can convert some 1st downs it makes life much better for the D.
It is true that the fast paced offense means that both teams get more opportunities to score.

the problem with that theory is simple
Sep 10, 2012, 10:56 PM

If we ran this fast of an offense and had a lot of 3 and outs, then yes our D wouldn't stand a chance.
However, we have long drives (how else would we get 80+ plays per game?) and score a lot of points. The problem with the Defense is certainly not the offense.

We're not Oregon who tries to score in a few plays
Sep 12, 2012, 9:50 AM

the reason we are a run first spread team is that while we go fast we still want to eat up clock and tire out the defense, which we've done this year. Still HUNH offenses do correlate with declining defenses but if you can score 30-40 on anyone then your D doesn't have to be that good. Tell your coot boss that when Auburn put that beat down on them in 2010 they were running a very very similar style of offense as us and their D, while not great, was still good and helped them win a NC.
