Dabo is Managing This QB Situation Perfectly - Longish

Sep 6, 2022, 1:18 PM

Many are frustrated that DJ's development and improvement is modest at best. I know Dabo and staff know it and see it clearly, but he is now doing what Dabo does best. Making the most out of a tough situation, he has 40+ years practice doing this and is a master of turning a bad hand into a winner and I think there is a method to this apparent madness that many folks are missing.

In a nutshell here is the issue, the foundations of the Clemson program and what make it unique, are centered on the team and growing young teens to good men while winning. Sometimes these principles get in conflict with each other and Dabo must navigate that friction. In no way is he being disingenuous when he praises DJ. DJ has grown, just not at the rate he needs to.

Dabo knows Cade is the future, but he doesn't have to make that call formally until the Wake or NCSU game. By the time we get to those games, if DJ is not materially improved, Cade will come in. Burning DJ now and him essentially disengaging or portalling serves no purpose. Keeping DJ in the starter role also does not put undue pressure or mileage on Cade. Cade will get playing time and, mark it down, Cade will be very ready as much as a Freshman can be when the time comes.

I bet sometime during or after the Wake game Cade takes over. Dabo then has seasoned Cade a bit and in the eyes of everyone has given DJ all the chance he needs to. Don't ever forget herds watch, if you manage DJ wrong it will cause some disruption in the herd. This works both ways, if he pulls DJ too soon or too late the herd watches. Dabo will go to the CFP as long as he is undefeated and if all the style points are not there it won't matter. An undefeated Clemson is in 100%. Stay patient.

Very well said - TL took over starting role in 4th game @ GT in 2018. The 4th game this year is @ Wake. History may be repeating itself. Go Tigers!

Very well stated and completely agree. I admit I am one of those that gets rubbed when Dabo keeps floating narratives. I understand the reason. I get the logistics. It still gets annoying to hear how "great" something is only to find out it isn't so. It's even more bothersome when I'm told my own eyes are deceiving me and what looked like a terrible play/series/game was actually great.

I think that is why we, as fans, are disappointed with the play of our team or individual players at times. The coaches sing their praise and build them up and then at game time the narrative doesn’t match reality. I kind of like the old days when our coaches would talk about the team needing improvement and then we would be pleasantly surprised come game time.

We as fans can be a lil needy and that’s why we’re fans and not coaches.

Possibly....based on the history

from the KB/TL QB situation I can hope that is true.

"I know Dabo and staff know it and see it clearly" - Again, I sure hope so. They don't have to kill DJ to say that Cade is pushing for more playing time and even the starting role. Why are they so scared to say what we all see clearly?
