Men's tennis is off on a northern trip for two weekend matches, at #16 Michigan State tomorrow at 6pm and at Northwestern on Sunday.

Michigan State is already 8-0 and #16 in the country. They are the prime example of how quickly a program can be turned around. MSU was the bottom of the barrel program in the Big Ten for many years because they had a rule that tennis scholarships were only limited to in-state players which severely limited them in a not huge tennis state. They finished last in the Big Ten pretty much everyone season.

But all that changed last year with a new coach and new NIL rules, they got aggressive in recruiting/transfer portal and have already made themselves into a top 20 team in one season.

Michigan State projected line-up:

1. #6 Ozan Baris, Sophomore. Okemos,MI
2. #12 Ronald Hohmann, Graduate. Oyster Bay,NY. Transfer from LSU
3. Sebastien Collard, Graduate. Gatineau,Quebec. Transfer from South Alabama
4. Taym Alazmeh, Freshman. Damascus,Syria
5. #59 Max Sheldon, Junior. Arlington Heights,IL
6. David Saye, Sophomore. Charlotte,NC

Hopefully we have Vukadin back in singles. He was playing in the practice pics on the team instagram so hopefully a good sign. It will be tough to win away from home against a strong team. Very curious to see how our team responds to the challenge.

And people say a couple of transfers can't make a difference...

They def can. Especially in tennis when you really only need 6 players

I'm a bit jealous at how quickly Michigan State has been able to turn their program into a contender with a hungry young and aggressive coach. And the crazy thing is, they signed a top player from Spain as well to make their lineup even stronger but he was not eligible for the spring season as it turned out.

I think Brandon Wagner can do the same for us but this it will have to be next year that we make a big jump. This year could be decent improvement though.

Looks like one of the college tennis podcasts will be there

The tennis rankings are sorta like the basketball net rankings. They go 100% by computer and based on strength of wins vs losses. Difference is, in the tennis rankings you get no credit for close matches. losing 7-0 or 4-3 is the same. So at some point you have to actually win matches vs higher ranked teams to move up.

I would say beating Northwestern Sunday is more likely and is a match we kinda need because we are already running out of ranking boosting wins before ACC play starts.
