College football relegation and promotion system

Dec 7, 2016, 5:00 PM

64 D1 teams. (power 5 plus Notre Dame, so 65 in year 1 only). 4 regions of 16.

64 D2 teams. (the group of 5 teams)

FCS teams (current FCS teams that stay in their same conferences)

Scheduling: 13 game seasons. 10 region games and 3 non region games(1 vs each of the other 3 regions). Divisions do not inter cross games, every game must be in your same division.

D1:
8 team playoff in D1. The 4 region winners and then 4 wild cards regardless of division but no more than 3 can go to playoffs from the same region.

Relegation: Bottom team in each D1 region plus 4 other worst records regardless of region play in 8 "relegation bowls". Losers of these bowls are relegated to D2.

D2:
4 Region winners and 4 wild cards regardless of division go to play in the 4 "promotion bowls". The winners of these bowl games are promoted to D1.

Relegation: Bottom team in each D2 region plus the 4 other worst records regardless of region play in 8 "D2 Relegation Bowls". Losers of these bowl games are relegated to D2.

FCS:
The 4 FCS playoff semifinalists are promoted to D2.

Regions will have to shift slightly from season to season based on the geography of the teams who are relegated and promoted each year.

forgot that 5 need to be relegated from D2 as well

Dec 7, 2016, 5:53 PM

to offset 5 teams being relegated from D1. So that means UMASS is the one time automatic relegation and add Kent State into the relegation bowl vs New Mexico State.

\how to spend 90 minutes in the office when you have nothing

Dec 7, 2016, 5:42 PM

to do

Re: \how to spend 90 minutes in the office when you have nothing

Dec 7, 2016, 5:48 PM

I like it.

Playoff expanded to 8 teams (top 2 in each region) with this?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yes 8 teams

Dec 7, 2016, 5:55 PM

and not necessarily 2 from each. The max from each region is 3. Depending on record could be 3 from a certain region and only 1 from another

Dec 7, 2016, 5:50 PM [ in reply to \how to spend 90 minutes in the office when you have nothing ]

Wow. Nice work. I hope you're not drawing a government salary.

That said, I have a question. With the promotions/relegations... it seems that with the wildcard nature of the system, it would be possible, over time, for a region to significantly decrease or increase in size, would it not? If 3 teams from 1 region all set relegated, and only one or even none promoted, the system becomes unsustainable. Or am I retarded and my reading comprehension needs some help?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

thats when the shuffling would come in

Dec 7, 2016, 5:51 PM

every year each region has 16 no matter what. That's why there are a few weird ones like NIU and Ball State being in the "south region".

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

ill do the regions for next year

Dec 7, 2016, 5:54 PM

following relegations and promotions based on who I think would win the bowl games and see just how much suffering would be needed

Ah. I didn't see your shifting regions part. But at a certain point, I imagine it could get out of hand. Seems like teams might would have to shift regions at some points. Especially if there is an unbalanced relegation as I previously laid out, and then one of those teams were then promoted back up the following season.

2017 shuffling

Dec 7, 2016, 6:52 PM

(results of bowls predicted)

relegated from D1
Rutgers, Arizona, Kansas, Iowa State, Illinois

Promoted to D1
Western Michigan, South Florida, Boise State, Navy

Relegated from D2
UMASS, Buffalo, Texas State, Fresno State

Promoted from FCS:
North Dakota State, James Madison, Wofford, Eastern Washington

D1 realignment ( - Relegation, + Promotion, > Shuffle in, { Shuffle out)

West
- Arizona. Relegation
+ Boise State. Promotion

Central
- Kansas
- Iowa State
- Illinois
+ Western Michigan
> LSU (South)
> Purdue (East)

East
- Rutgers
{ Purdue (Central)
+ Navy

South
{ LSU (Central)
+ USF

D2 realignment: (- lose to Relegation, _ gain through relegation, + gain through promotion, ^ lose through promotion, > shuffle in, { shuffle out)

West
- Fresno State
^ Boise State
_ Arizona
+ Eastern Washington

Central
- Texas State
_ Kansas
_ Iowa State
+ North Dakota State
{ Memphis (South)
{ Troy (South)
{ South Alabama (South)
> Ball State (South)
> Northern Illinois (South)
{ Arkansas State (South)

South
^ USF
^ Navy
+ Wofford
> Memphis (Central)
> Troy (Central)
> South Alabama (Central)
> Arkansas State (Central)
{ Ball State (Central)
{ Northern Illinois (Central)
{ Old Dominion (East)

East
^ Western Michigan
- Kent State
- Buffalo
- UMASS
_ Illinois
_ Rutgers
> Old Dominion (South)
+ James Madison

ok so the D2 Central is shifting more north than south so that's why they sent so many teams to the south and gained more midwestern teams. D2 realignment was a bit difficult

Re: College football relegation and promotion system

Dec 7, 2016, 7:02 PM

I've always believed in promotion/relegation for college football, but I think for the sake of practicality you'd have to make each tier 12 teams, not 16. If you're not doing round-robin it's pointless because certain teams would avoid others and you won't get a "true" champ. That would give you 11 regular season games; I'd reserve the 12th for your "permanent" rival, even if that rival is not in your tier, like us against South Carolina. That game would not count against standings, by the way, but it still needs to be played and I wouldn't want to give that game up.

But I like the idea, a lot, and it provides an ironclad mechanism for settling it on the field. It also gets rid of a whole lot of dead weight and meaningless bodybag games.
