Anyone on here successfully quit smoking?

Sep 28, 2012, 2:58 PM

How did u do it?? Ive cut back to only 3 or 4 a day but I want to quit all together. I know alot of people who quit but they gain weight or turn to another unhealthy habit. I also don't want to buy any stupid nicotine patches or those "Eletronic cigerrates" Please help, my lungs need all the help they can get! Go tigers!

Get a time machine and go back in time and tell yourself

not to start.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Here's how I did it...

Sep 28, 2012, 3:06 PM

Every time I wanted a cigarette, I drank a beer instead. Of course, drinking beer makes you want a cigarette even more, so you just start drinking more and more beer. Eventually you're so drunk that you just go to bed.

You wake up hungover, but at least you didn't smoke. Go to work, come home, and do it again.

After a few weeks you're a non-smoker!

(Seriously, this is really how I quit. LOL)

Pretty funny lol but when I drink is when I want one the most and that's honestly the only time of day I smoke.

Substitute a healthy habit like jogging. When you push yourself jogging, you will wonder how dumb you could have been to have ever smoked. Plus, if the only time you smoke is when you drink, then quit drinking and you will be doing yourself a double favor.

I had probably tried to quit at least 50 times. Sometimes I'd go a week or more, sometimes it wouldn't last a day. My biggest problem was that every time I'd have a few beers, I'd give in and start lighting up. Eventually I had to quit drinking in order to quit smoking. Needless to say, the drinking started back, but I haven't smoked a cigarette in over 25 years.

You're already down to 3-4 a day. Good job.

Next step: Quit the morning cigarette. Make your first cigarette when you leave work.

Seriously, this will make going cold turkey much easier. No nic fit first thing in the morning cause you're already used to not smoking in the morning.

Cold turkey for me

Sep 28, 2012, 3:19 PM

I tried cutting back. Only on weekends or if I made it through the work day I clould have one when I got home. I started rewarding myself smoke breaks for everything. That lasted 2 months. Finally I put them down and went through the withdrawl. It is not that bad looking back. Life will throw a curveball making you want one, but you will get by. Dreams were the worst. Not nightmares, but dreams of smoking and the dread I had to start the process again. After a while (it goes quick but you don't want to know how long) you will hate the smell of it. Good luck. You will win.

Sep 28, 2012, 3:20 PM

I quit 3½ years ago. You seem to have the desire, now the next step is deciding that being healthy is more important than smoking. The last step is simply making a decision that you are not going to smoke anymore. Smoking is a habit and you have to use re-enforcements to change your habit. What worked for me was every time I had the urge, I just told myself, "I don't do that anymore". Sometimes out loud. You'll find yourself reaching for the pack that is not there any longer, but don't give in, you can quit. I tried to cutting back, but that just prolongs the misery! I'm hoping and praying that you beat this addiction, T-Mail me if you need support!

Always remember that urges are ALWAYS temporary.

I had urges to smoke a cigarette for about a year. Everytime this happened I just had to get through it and remind myself that it would go away.

You can do it!

Re: Anyone on here successfully quit smoking?

Sep 28, 2012, 3:27 PM

I just quit smoking and dipping after 10 years. I had dipped and smoked since I was 16.

The best advice anyone ever gave me is:

1) Quit cold turkey. No tapering anything off or "slowing down." Just quit right now. THROW THE PACK AWAY RIGHT THIS SECOND. You don't need a "farewell cigarette" or any of that garbage. If you're serious about quitting - just quit. RIGHT NOW! I don't care if you're going out for beers tonight or you're going camping. RIGHT NOW!

2) You're an addict. And you always will be one. You can never have "just one puff" or "just one cigarette." If you do, you're going to relapse. The easiest way not to get readdicted is to decide you're never going to smoke again --- not when you drink, not a little puff or taste. Nothing.

3) Nicotine gun, patches etc are ALL CRAP! They're even more expensive than cigarettes and don't address the real issue. You're not addicted to cigarettes. You're addicted to nicotine. Cold turkey has a 500% higher success rate when compared with gimmicks like Nicorette and patches. It's a shortcut that leads many to fail.

Just quit. Chew gun. Drink more water. DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO KEEP THAT CIGARETTE OUT OF YOUR MOUTH. Don't go outside with your friends who smoke. And don't think that you can have just a puff or just a cigarette and be fine. You're an addict --- it's permanent, you'll always be hardwired to go back to the habit if you put it in your body.

PUT THE PACK DOWN NOW! AND DON'T EVER TOUCH IT AGAIN.

It will be hell for about 7 days. It will suck for about 6 months after that. But as each day passes, you'll be proud of yourself for overcoming your addiction, which fuels your quit even stronger.

PM me for any help. I just went through this. I've been quit since February.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with this.

Sep 28, 2012, 3:31 PM

Once you quit. Don't EVER put a cigarette in your mouth again! No matter how bad you want it. You'll never quit if you keep taking puffs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"We establish no religion in this country, we mandate no belief. Nor will we ever. Church and state are, and must remain, separate." ~Ronald Reagan

Re: I agree with this.

Sep 28, 2012, 3:32 PM

Exactly. I learned from the support group over at killthecan.org --- #1 cause of caving is "having just one dip" or "taking just one puff of a cig" or "having a cigar to celebrate JUST ONE special occasion."

It can never be again. Your chances of relapsing go up 50% for every puff, and a few hundred percent for every full cigarette.

I don't ever tell myself that I can have just one. Because I know I can't. I'm powerless when it comes to nicotine, and that's why I became addicted in the first place.

I should quit cold turkey but most people I know who did have always came back down the road. My plan was to cut down from 3 or 4 to just 1 or 2. I think it would be easier to quit that way rather than quitting cold turkey. But I can't say much because I still smoke and you have successfully quit, I will try though. I appreciate the advice

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good sound advice.

Sep 28, 2012, 5:02 PM [ in reply to Re: Anyone on here successfully quit smoking? ]

And another thing- the first day is the toughest. After the first day, remind yourself how hard it was and vow not to have to go through it again.Do the same thing after the second day, and each day thereafter. The sense of accomplishment grows with each day, week, month, etc..
I have been quit for 24 years and it was the best thing I ever did for myself.
Good Luck

I've been off them 14 years. I quit 15-20 times, and started back. I finally saw that I had been burning $$$$ for so long, I got mad at myself for depriving my family of things more important.
I quit cold turkey 1998. Took me about six weeks to get past the heebie jeebies, the realized I could smell and taste a whole lot better.

You can do it. It takes a day at a time, and don't quit trying!!!!!!! You WILL be successful!!!!

But I did chew for about the last 12 years this past spring I had a health scare as a result. I quit the day I walked out of the doctors office...cold turkey. It was actually a lot easier than I was expecting, probably because of the health scare.

Best thing I ever did, not only for my health, but my wallet. It's been about 8 months now and I hate that even started in the first place.

My advice, take it one day at a time, everytime you need a "fix" chew some gum(sugar free) and try to keep your hands and mouth busy an

four days then cut them into quarters and used them for six days and then nothing. The key for me was to smoke ZERO each day. When I tried to smoke two or three it never worked. I was grouchy as hell or so my wife (who was very supportive) says, but I was leaving a 3-4 pack a day habit and I had smoked from 18 to 42 years old. I tried not to substitute anything for it and did not go out drinking with the guys for the first 3 months. I never had another cigarette and it does not bother me if anyone smokes around me. I give the patches a lot of credit getting me going. I wish you the best of luck and ask that if you are successful that you don't become one of those preachers against other smokers (like you hate to encounter now). GOOD LUCK! & Go TIGERS!

PS- for the first three weeks I carried an UNOPEN pack of cigarettes with me and made it a challenge not to open it. I did not advertise it so nobody would try to bum one from me causing me to open it. Again, Good Luck!

Chantix

Sep 28, 2012, 3:45 PM

I asked my Dr. if he knew of any good ways to quit besides cold turkey. He talked to me about Chantix... I tried it and it worked. It is pretty steep in price, but it's worth it if everything else has failed. On a side note: I did have some craaazy dreams. At first I had night tremors but they stopped after the first couple of weeks.
I couldn't quit cold turkey and the patch didn't help me either. I know several people that used Chantix and they are still smoke free.
Also, the craving will always be there (esp. tailgating) you just have to tell yourself, no.
Good luck!

Gave me weird and VIVID dreams. I had to start smoking again just so I could sleep soundly. Instead of dreaming about DSP and GWP dancing around in pink tutus in front of Barbara Streisand at a funeral...

hmmm...wait...I'm not so sure that was dream...

As a side note. I do smoke electronic cigs with 0 nicotine and hate the taste of cigs now. The habit of smoking so to speak is still there but the toxins are not. However, I wonder if I can grind some Sensimilla and put it in this electronic cig??

That was over 25 years ago.

But, that was just me and I can't say that everyone should be able to do that.

I do however, firmly believe that until a person actually, honestly, WANTS to quit, that all methods are ineffective.

Once you decide honestly to quit, then almost any method will work.

Cutting back won't do it. Dwight Eisenhower smoked 4 packs a day and the doctor told him he should cut back to a pack. Ike tried that and said it was easier to quit than count smokes. To me that is way to much pressure. Don't quit for your birthday or new years resolution. I used toothpicks and it worked-of course I became addicted to toothpicks after that. A few smokes is as bad for you as a pack a day.

Twenty-Six years ago I smoked 3 packs a day. I was 40 years old playing softball and had a Heart attack. Doctor told me to stop or die. Scared the crap out of me. Never touched another one. If you make up your mind you can do it. By the way I would not suggest this method.

I quit a long time ago. I wish you the best. Remember that it's worth it health and money-wise. STAY AWAY FROM PEOPLE WHO SMOKE- at least for a while. Ease up on the booze, easy to relapse when you're having a drink or two.

The nicotine is cleared from your body in about a week. After that- any craving is purely mental.

Good luck and god bless- YOU CAN DO IT!
