Alabama great Bear Bryant was hosting Clemson legend Frank Howard in Tuscaloosa. Coach Howard, noting a red phone on Bryant's desk, said "Coach, can I use your phone?" Bear said "Well, that's our phone line to Heaven. It'll cost you $10" - a considerable sum in those days. Frank Howard scratched his head, checked his wallet, then politely withdrew his request.
The next year Alabama played at Clemson, and Bryant saw that Coach Howard had a red phone on his desk too. "Let me guess, Bryant said...that's your phone to Heaven." Howard smiled and nodded yes. "Ok, how much is it gonna cost me?" Bryant followed. "Oh, help yourself. It's free, Howard said. That's a local call around here."
I remember one Saturday that it was raining. Was on front steps of Fike after pre-game meal. Group of Alumni were there talking to Howard about the rain. He said in his best drawl "don't worry about the rain, boys" looked up in sky took out his whisle gave a long blast. Clouds parted and sun came out. Not a cloud in sky by gametime. Saw it happen!
