The Tiger secondary...

Apr 12, 2016, 6:13 AM

I admit that I'm a little concerned about the tiger defensive secondary. Aside from Alexander who clearly was a solid player, I was never really sold on the group from last year. Yeah we made it to the national championship game so I'm not saying they were bad but the big plays given up were not exactly comforting. Sometimes to breakdowns were glaring. I'm my mind, Kearse and Blsnks were not bad players but based on last year, they seem very replaceable.

It just seems to me like the guys filling the holes this year might be more talented across the board on average but can they hold up on the road at Auburn while figuring things out? I'm not sure...

I guess there are just too many unknowns to say for sure but the recruiting seems solid enough. I forget the name of the high profile pickup that's coming in the fall but will he contribute this year without the spring to help prepare him?

Overall, I like the team. I feel good about it. But the secondary concerns me. Tank got beat in the spring game more than once and we gave up a couple big plays there too. But it was just a scrimmage. Any thoughts on this guys to calm my concerns?

Maybe understanding this will bring you some more comfort

Apr 12, 2016, 6:37 AM

The best thing about having such a strong front 4 - and 7 (and deep at each position)?

The fact that those guys alone will be able to swallow up any sort if rushing attack, allowing our guys on the back end to sit back and relax 6 yards of the LOS while reading the QBs eyes and playing center field (see the Cyrus Jones pick for Bama vs. Sparty on the 1 yd line).

This...

As opposed to having the need to come up and man press cover with ours DBs and have their backs to the QB too often while getting beat deep regularly as a result. Because of an elite front 7, there's less of a need to play 8 men in the box (extra S) to stop the run, or disguise blitzes with secondary with secondary guys leaving us a man short to defend the deep stuff.

Saban is a master of this defensive scheme, and it frustrates the hell out of offensives when 4 DL shut dowm the run and they're forced to throw into coverage in an attempt to get back in the game.

Oh, and a secondary consisting of:

Tank V. Smith Jadar Fields

And with O'Daniel/Wiggins/Carter at the nickel, the starting secondary will by no means whatsoever be a weakness for our D.

Second team of:

Carter Muse Denzel/Simmons Carter/Edmonds

....won't necessarily ruin our title hopes either.

No, but there's a lot of inexperience there so those guys

Apr 12, 2016, 8:27 AM

will need some time to get their feet wet. Fortunately, Auburn doesn't seem to bet set up well in the passing game at the moment so we might be able to get by in that one, and then the guys will have some time to settle in.

The other concern is depth. Nobody wants to think about it or talk about it, but you know the injury is coming, it's just a question of who and when.

Yeah, I read that from Auburn guys today too. They (A) Don't believe they'll be able to complete a forward pass vs. an FBS team this year, (B) said there's no depth in the secondary and LB (scary thought to lose someone before facing the best Clemson offense in school history) and (C) believe their OL to be atrocious.

Obviously there's the QB concerns as well. Their more informed posters believe it'll take much more that a QB solution to see success this year. A couple said they'll be playing golf and fishing on Saturday's, watching NFL on Sunday's.

Hope they don't have too many injuries in fall camp though. Would like to see somewhat of a game, for the first half at least.

Auburn always seems to do well early

Apr 12, 2016, 8:48 AM

Sleeping on the Tigers will be a mistake. Auburn, even in their worst years, seems to play well early in the season. When they've had really bad years, they've lost a couple close contests and then just fallen apart.

Their offense can be difficult to stop, but QB is key. Trouble along the OL, however (if it happens), will be the kiss of death against the Clemson D regardless. Playing on the road is always a challenge for younger players. My concern on the plains is a defensive lapse that gives them a big play and potentially a long score.

I think Mullens is the guy coming in the fall, and he is a good one. Saw a comment that he would be getting playing time as a freshman, but I'm content to let the HCDS and staff be the judge of that!

As for "getting beat/burned in the spring game" - don't discount the fact that our D was playing possibly the BEST offense in the country - spring game or not.

That is an excellent point mr bill. I just have concerns. I'd like to see less big plays given up

Also keep in mind that the 1s and 2s wwre split in the O&W game. Instead of the chemistry and communication and being on the same page, Jadar and Smith weren't lined up next to each other and each were missing a 1st team CB. In other words, they needes to do more than what would normally be asked of them when lined up with all the 1s.

The 2s (when one or more need to be on the field with the 1s) will be more adept to their assignments come Sep 3rd. They're young right now and this was their first taste of non-scout team work.

Don't sleep on K'Von Wallace

Apr 12, 2016, 8:55 AM [ in reply to Re: The Tiger secondary... ]

Wiggins was more than a formidable TrFr.

Blanks as well.

Mullen, perhaps...

But this kid may have a say in the matter when it's all said and done (at least in man coverage, non-thinking, situational downs at the start of the year)

Good point ManlyMan, forgot about Wallace! (But I do NOT share your confidence/optimism in a 'terrible Auburn team, fishing, NFL, etc. ...").

We are going to get beat a few tome deeps. We are going to have a couple blown coverages. Some has to do with BV and others will have to do with youth. I don't see it keeping us from being great. I do not see it being as bad as last year either. These boys are hungry. We have a whole offseason to improve from what we just had seen Saturday. We have plenty of talent and some young guys coming in to provide more depth. I can see us giving up 1 or 2 TDs thru the air a game because of it but I don't see any team out scoring our O and I also believe we will make teams have to throw the ball and we can sit back and get some INTs. We are going to be just fine!!!

I wouldn't even say we are "more talented" on average

Apr 12, 2016, 10:01 AM

Alexander and Kearse were both highly recruited 4- star players (Alexander was a 5-star according to some). By the time Green started, we knew he was much better than a 2-star athlete.

I think there are only maybe one or two 4-stars in the whole current secondary. Only one- Mark Fields- really has a chance to start, and he hasn't really seemed to grasp the starting position. Adrian Baker was a guy who was more than living up to his billing, but he's out for the year.

What??

Apr 12, 2016, 10:15 AM

4 Stars:

Tank
V. Smith
Fields
Muse
Denzel
Baker
Mullen

3 Stars:

Wallace (we were in a dog fight with Ohio State for this kid after his senior film came out)

Simmons (see above, sub in Michigan for tOSU)

Johnson (our most consistent and reliable S, and.... and, and, and.... 1 full star better than Green)

Probs not the best idea to discount Green's star rating, then in the same breath say we're gonna suck because of our low star ratings in the secondary.

You're right. Jadar Johnson red-shirted last year. Oh wait, no... he played a bunch in the playoffs and stuff. Big pic against Miami, too.

Other side of your argument? See Dodd, Goodsen, Tank, Wilkins and Green going into last year ;)

I shouldn't have left wiggins off the list. Another guy with 1 full star more than Green. Thought it may hurt my star argument. Nice flip.
